Maintaining gear in Cyrodiil is the difference between a successful dungeon crawl and a humiliating retreat. The Armorer skill governs your ability to repair weapons and armor using repair hammers. As this skill increases, you consume fewer hammers, gain the ability to fix magical items, and eventually strengthen your gear beyond its original factory condition. To accelerate this progression, seeking out professional trainers is the most efficient path.
In the current state of the game, players are limited to five training sessions per character level across all skills. This makes choosing when and where to invest in Armorer training a strategic decision. This guide details every trainer's location, their specific requirements, and the complex steps needed to unlock Master-level instruction.
The progression of Armorer expertise
Before hunting down specific NPCs, it is essential to understand the milestones of the Armorer skill. These tiers dictate which trainers will agree to work with you and what benefits you unlock naturally through practice.
- Novice (0-24): You can repair non-magical armor and weapons. Each hammer has a high chance of breaking.
- Apprentice (25-49): Repair hammers last longer, reducing the weight of necessary supplies in your inventory.
- Journeyman (50-74): This is a critical milestone. You gain the ability to repair magical weapons and armor. Without this, you must pay exorbitant fees at smithy shops to maintain enchanted loot.
- Expert (75-99): You can repair items up to 125% of their maximum durability. This provides a temporary bonus to weapon damage and the armor rating of your protective gear.
- Master (100): Repair hammers never break. A single hammer lasts forever, freeing up significant inventory space and eliminating maintenance costs.
Apprentice Armorer Trainers (Skill 0-40)
Apprentice trainers are suitable for early-game characters or those who have ignored the skill and need a quick boost to reach the Journeyman tier. There are two primary trainers available for this level.
Eitar
Eitar is a Nord smith located in the city of Leyawiin. You can find him working at The Dividing Line, a well-known weaponry and armor shop in the southern part of the city. He is generally available during standard business hours, typically from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Eitar has no specialized prerequisites for his services. As long as your skill is below 40 and you have the necessary gold, he will provide training. His central location in Leyawiin makes him an easy stop for players operating in the southern marshes or participating in local quests.
Tadrose Helas
Tadrose Helas is a Dunmer smith found within the Bravil Fighters Guild. Unlike Eitar, her services are conditional. You must be a member of the Fighters Guild to access her training.
If you have already joined the guild, she is an excellent choice. She spends most of her time in the guild's basement or the main hall, tending to the forge. Her availability is consistent, but like most NPCs, she will not train you while she is sleeping or eating. Being a member of the guild often provides the added benefit of nearby repair hammers and potentially cheaper gear, making her a high-value contact for aspiring warriors.
Journeyman Armorer Trainers (Skill 40-70)
Once your skill exceeds 40, the apprentice trainers will no longer be able to teach you anything new. They will instead direct you to more experienced smiths located in the heart of Cyrodiil.
Rasheda
Rasheda is a Redguard smith and the proprietor of Fire and Steel in the city of Chorrol. She is widely considered one of the most reliable trainers in the game due to her consistent schedule and the quality of her shop's inventory.
Rasheda will train you until your skill reaches 70. Beyond training, she sells a unique item called "Rasheda's Special," which are heavy gauntlets that provide a fortify Armorer effect. This can be useful if you are just short of a skill milestone and need a temporary boost to repair a specific piece of high-level magical gear.
Rohssan
Rohssan (sometimes referred to as Rhossan) operates A Fighting Chance in the Imperial City Market District. As a Redguard smith, she brings a high degree of expertise to her craft. Her shop is located in the busiest commercial hub of the province, making her perhaps the most accessible trainer for players who frequently visit the capital to sell loot.
Rohssan is available daily during shop hours. It is worth noting that she keeps a dog in her shop, which generally does not interfere with training but adds to the atmosphere of the establishment. She will train you from level 40 up to level 70. Once you hit the skill ceiling for Journeyman training, she will be one of the two NPCs who can trigger the Master Armorer quest.
The Master Armorer: Gin-Wulm
To reach the pinnacle of the Armorer skill and achieve the rank of Master, you must seek out Gin-Wulm. He is an Argonian smith who works at The Best Defense, located in the Imperial City Market District.
Gin-Wulm is a unique character with a wandering schedule. While he is employed at The Best Defense, he often spends his time outside the shop. You can frequently find him roaming the Market District or the Elven Gardens District. Unlike other trainers, Gin-Wulm will not help you simply because you have the coin; you must prove your knowledge and dedication to the craft.
Initiating the Master Training Quest
To start the "Armorer Training" quest, you must fulfill the following conditions:
- Have a base Armorer skill of at least 70.
- Speak to either Rasheda in Chorrol or Rohssan in the Imperial City about "Training."
They will inform you that they have taught you everything they know and suggest that only Gin-Wulm is capable of further instruction. This will add a quest marker to your journal directing you to the Argonian in the capital.
The Challenge of Hazadir
When you first approach Gin-Wulm and ask for training, he will be dismissive. He sarcastically asks you a specific question to test if you are a true student of the craft: "What does the name Hazadir mean to you?"
Unless you have prepared for this encounter, your only dialogue option will be "Nothing." To progress, you must find and read a specific book titled The Armorer's Challenge. You do not need to have the book in your inventory when speaking to him, but your character must have "read" it (opened it) at least once for the correct dialogue option to appear.
Where to find "The Armorer's Challenge"
Finding this book is the primary objective of the quest. There are several reliable locations to obtain it:
- First Edition (Imperial City): This is the most straightforward method. Visit Phintias at the First Edition bookstore, also located in the Market District. He usually has a copy for sale. This is the recommended route for most players.
- Cheydinhal Fighters Guild: For those who prefer not to spend gold, a copy can be found on the second floor of the Cheydinhal Fighters Guild. It is sitting on top of a bookshelf. Note that taking it may be considered theft if you are not a member of the guild or if your rank is too low.
- Random Loot: The book can occasionally appear in random chests or on the shelves of other wealthy NPCs, but relying on this is inefficient.
Completing the Quest
Once you have read the book, return to Gin-Wulm. When he asks about Hazadir, you will now have the option to answer: "He won the Armorer's Challenge."
Satisfied that you understand the history and prestige of his lineage (as Hazadir is revealed to be a distant relative of his), Gin-Wulm will agree to provide training. From this point forward, as long as you have the gold and the training slots available for your current level, he can raise your Armorer skill all the way to 100.
Strategies for efficient Armorer leveling
Training is expensive, and since you can only train five times per level, you should use these sessions wisely. The cost of training scales with your current skill level, meaning it is much cheaper to train from 10 to 15 than it is from 90 to 95.
However, the difficulty of leveling Armorer manually also increases significantly at higher levels. For this reason, many experienced players choose to level the skill naturally during the early game (Apprentice and Journeyman tiers) and save their professional training sessions for the final push from level 75 to 100.
To level naturally without spending gold:
- Loot everything: Even if you don't plan on keeping or selling an enemy's armor, repair it before leaving the dungeon. Every point of damage fixed contributes to your skill experience.
- Buy hammers in bulk: Visit every general trader and smith to buy their stock of repair hammers. They are heavy (1.0 weight each), so managing your encumbrance is key.
- The "Broken Gear" Method: Some players deliberately stand in front of low-level enemies (like mudcrabs or rats) while wearing heavy armor to let their gear take damage, then repair it immediately. While effective, this can be tedious.
Enhancing the Armorer skill with items
In addition to training, certain items can provide a temporary or permanent boost to your Armorer capabilities. These are particularly useful if you want to reach the 125% repair bonus (Expert) or the magical repair threshold (Journeyman) earlier than your base level allows.
- Apron of the Master Artisan: This is a highly sought-after clothing item. It provides a +7 boost to Armorer, Alchemy, and Security. You can purchase it from Norbert Lelles at Lelles' Quality Merchandise in the Anvil Dockside gate. It is non-armored clothing, meaning it doesn't count toward your armor weight.
- Rasheda's Special: As mentioned previously, these gauntlets provide a +5 boost. They are heavy armor, so they are best suited for warrior builds.
Why the Master rank matters in the endgame
Reaching level 100 in Armorer is more than just a completionist goal. In the late-game stages of Oblivion, you will encounter enemies with high health pools and powerful equipment. Having your own gear repaired to 125% provides a significant edge in both survivability and damage output.
Furthermore, the "Unbreakable Hammer" perk at level 100 is a massive quality-of-life improvement. In Oblivion, inventory management is a constant struggle. Being able to discard 20-30 pounds of repair hammers in favor of more loot or specialized scrolls can change how you approach long expeditions into the Planes of Oblivion or sprawling Ayleid ruins.
