Ashes of Ariandel Walkthrough: Every Secret and Boss Strategy
Entering the Painted World of Ariandel requires preparation, a high-level character, and a keen eye for environmental hazards. This snowy expansion to the Lothric saga introduces some of the most challenging encounters in the series, demanding a mix of frost resistance and tactical patience. The following sections provide a comprehensive path through the frozen wastes, ensuring no Titanite Slabs are missed and providing strategies for the brutal boss encounters awaiting within.
Accessing the Painted World of Ariandel
To begin the journey into the painting, travel to the Cathedral of the Deep. At the Cleansing Chapel bonfire, a hooded NPC, Slave Knight Gael, kneels beside the altar. Speaking to him and exhausting his dialogue triggers a cutscene where the player is transported into the Painted World. It is generally recommended to be at least Soul Level 70 to 80 before attempting this content, as the enemies here possess significant health pools and high damage output.
The Snowfield: Navigating the First Hazards
Upon arrival, light the Snowfield bonfire immediately behind the starting point. The initial path leads through a cave into a wide, open valley. Farron Followers roam this area in groups; they are relatively weak individually but can overwhelm through sheer numbers, especially those throwing javelins or breathing fire.
Moving toward the right side of the valley, the ground will give way. This is a scripted event. After the fall, expect an ambush by a pack of wolves. Wolves in Ariandel use pack tactics, where one howls to summon others while the group circles the player. High-poise weapons or wide-swinging Greatswords are effective for keeping them at bay.
Continuing along the cliff edge leads to an encounter with a Greatwolf. This creature is fast and aggressive but will retreat once its health drops to a certain threshold. Following the path up the incline leads to the Millwood ruins. Here, Millwood Knights—massive warriors with high physical defense—guard the area. One knight on top of the ruined tower uses a Millwood Greatbow that fires exploding arrows. Maneuver behind cover to approach the tower, then climb the ladders to deal with the archer. At the top of this tower, the Captain's Ashes can be found, which expands the Shrine Handmaid’s inventory back at Firelink Shrine.
The Rope Bridge and Ariandel Chapel
From the Millwood ruins, head left across the upper snowbanks to reach the Rope Bridge Cave bonfire. Beyond this point lies a long, precarious rope bridge leading to the Chapel of Ariandel. Several peaceful NPCs inhabit this area, but they offer cryptic warnings about the rot consuming the painting.
Inside the Chapel, speak with Sister Friede. Talking to her twice rewards the Chillbite Ring, which provides essential frost resistance for the challenges ahead. Sir Vilhelm stands outside the chapel; his dialogue changes based on player progress, but he remains non-hostile for now.
Unlocking the Depths of the Painting
The rope bridge serves a dual purpose. Similar to the bridge in the Catacombs of Carthus, the bridge leading to the chapel can be destroyed. Attacking the ropes causes the bridge to collapse, creating a makeshift ladder.
Climbing down the collapsed bridge leads to the Depths of the Painting. This descent involves navigating giant frozen roots guarded by Follower archers and Millwood Knights. Great care is required here, as a single fall results in instant death. At the bottom, a frozen lake stretches out, guarded by two Giant Crabs. Behind them, a narrow pass leads to a ladder that creates a shortcut back to the Rope Bridge Cave.
Boss Fight: Champion’s Gravetender and Greatwolf
Located in the flower-filled clearing at the base of the depths, this optional boss fight begins with the Champion’s Gravetender and several small wolves.
- Phase One: Eliminate the small wolves immediately. The Gravetender himself behaves much like a PvP NPC, using a sword and shield (Valorheart). He is susceptible to parries and backstabs.
- Phase Two: When the Gravetender’s health reaches 50%, the Gravetender Greatwolf enters the arena. This is the same wolf encountered earlier in the snowfield. The wolf is incredibly fast, utilizing dashing bites and a frost-breath attack.
A viable strategy is to finish off the Gravetender as quickly as possible once the wolf appears to avoid a two-on-one scenario. The Greatwolf can be staggered with heavy overhead attacks to its head, opening it up for a critical strike. Victory rewards the Champion's Bones, used to unlock the Undead Match PvP arena.
The Corvian Settlement
To progress toward the main boss, return to the Rope Bridge Cave and follow the narrow path down the cliffside into the Corvian Settlement. This area is characterized by rotting structures and diseased Corvians. Most Corvians are non-aggressive, but the Corvian Knights are among the most dangerous non-boss enemies in the game.
There are two types of Corvian Knights: those wielding Crow Quills (rapiers) and those with Crow Talons (claws). They possess extremely high agility and can inflict rapid bleed damage. Utilizing a shield with 100% physical absorption or using heavy weapons to pancake them is advised.
Navigate through the settlement by climbing onto the rooftops. This allows access to the library where Sir Vilhelm eventually confronts the player. Defeating Vilhelm rewards the Onyx Blade and the Contraption Key. The key is used to operate a lever in the library that lowers a secret staircase, leading to the top floor where the Painting Woman resides.
The Snowy Mountain Pass
After exiting the library, light the Snowy Mountain Pass bonfire. This area is a vertical maze of narrow ledges and caves. Millwood Knights and Followers patrol the slopes. Follow the torches through the pass to reach the higher elevations.
One specific path leads to a bell-bearing tower guarded by an Ethereal Oak Shield. Further along, the path descends into a cave filled with Giant Flies. This "Fly Pit" is the key to unlocking the final boss arena. There is a hidden pillar in the lower level of this pit with a crank. Turning this crank triggers a cinematic showing the altar in the Ariandel Chapel moving aside to reveal a secret passage.
Final Boss Strategy: Sister Friede and Father Ariandel
This is a unique three-phase encounter that tests endurance, resource management, and timing.
Phase One: Sister Friede
Friede is fast and can be easily staggered, but she deals high frost damage. Her most dangerous move is her invisibility. When she disappears, watch the snow on the ground; if it kicks up in a specific direction, she has jumped behind the player. Quickly locating her while she charges her scythe allows for a free backstab.
Phase Two: Father Ariandel and Friede
Friede is resurrected by Father Ariandel. They share a single health bar. Father Ariandel is massive and aggressive, slamming his cauldron down for fire and physical damage. The most effective strategy is to focus on Father Ariandel, as he is a much larger and slower target. However, keep an eye on Friede; she will occasionally cast ice trails or attempt to heal the Father. Using high-damage fire or bleed weapons can end this phase quickly.
Phase Three: Blackflame Friede
Friede rises once more, now imbued with Blackflame. She becomes significantly more aggressive, gaining new AOE attacks and longer combos. Most of her jumping attacks can be dodged by rolling forward, putting the player in a position to backstab her as she lands. This phase is a battle of attrition; do not get greedy with hits, as her dark magic can deplete a health bar in seconds.
Essential Item Locations and Titanite Slabs
Ashes of Ariandel provides several Titanite Slabs, crucial for maximizing weapon damage. Missing these can significantly hinder late-game progression.
- Slab 1: Obtained automatically after defeating the second phase of the Sister Friede boss fight for the first time.
- Slab 2: Found in the Depths of the Painting. After defeating the Champion’s Gravetender, follow the path toward the waterfall and defeat the tree-women enemies. A ladder will appear; climb it to find the slab on a ledge.
- Slab 3: Given by the Corvian NPC located in the settlement. Speak to him after defeating Sister Friede to receive the reward for "cleansing" the world.
Key Weapons to Collect:
- Millwood Greatbow: Found on a corpse in the woods near the Millwood ruins. It is the premier strength-based ranged weapon.
- Follower Sabre: Located on a narrow root in the descent to the Depths of the Painting. It features a powerful guard-breaking weapon art.
- Onyx Blade: Looted from Sir Vilhelm. It is an excellent choice for Intelligence/Faith builds.
- Friede’s Great Scythe: Transposed from the Soul of Sister Friede. It features a unique dual-wielding move set that inflicts frostbite.
Tactical Tips for Success
- Frost Resistance: Equip the Chillbite Ring or use Rime-Blue Moss Clumps. Frostbite reduces stamina recovery and deals a burst of damage when it procs.
- Fire Damage: Almost every enemy in the Painted World, including the bosses and the Corvian Knights, is weak to fire. Pyromancies or Charcoal Pine Resin provide a significant damage boost.
- Environmental Awareness: Many paths in the Snowy Mountain Pass are obscured by snow. Use Prism Stones if you are unsure of a drop's lethality.
The Painted World of Ariandel is a test of a player's mastery over Dark Souls 3's combat mechanics. By following this path, one can navigate the rot, uncover the secrets of the painting, and stand victorious against the cold.
