Navigating the leaking, Art Deco corridors of Rapture requires more than just a quick trigger finger. This underwater dystopia is designed to punish the unprepared. Whether playing the original classic or the Remastered edition, mastering the ecosystem of Plasmids, Splicers, and Big Daddies is essential for survival. This walkthrough provides a comprehensive roadmap through every major district, ensuring no Audio Diary or Power to the People station is overlooked.

Essential Survival Strategies Before Decending

Rapture operates on a unique set of rules. Success often depends on how resources are managed before the first shot is even fired.

The ADAM Economy: Save or Harvest?

Saving Little Sisters provides less ADAM immediately but leads to "Gifts" from Tenenbaum every three rescues. These gifts contain unique Gene Tonics and large sums of ADAM that eventually bridge the gap. For a smoother late-game experience, saving every Little Sister is generally recommended.

Research Camera Mastery

As soon as the camera is acquired in Neptune’s Bounty, it should become the most used tool in the inventory. Taking multiple photos of every enemy type—especially while they are distracted or being damaged by different elements—unlocks permanent damage bonuses and exclusive Tonics. Maxing out research on Thuggish Splicers and Leadhead Splicers early provides a massive advantage.

Hacking vs. Buying

Hacking vending machines not only lowers prices but can change the inventory available. Hacking health stations is even more critical; an unhacked station heals an enemy Splicer if they reach it, while a hacked one will gas them to death.

Welcome to Rapture: The First Steps

The journey begins in the Atlantic Ocean. After the plane crash, swimming toward the Lighthouse is the only path. Once inside the bathysphere, the lever initiates the descent into the city.

Upon arrival, the first weapon available is the Wrench. While it seems basic, combined with the Electro Bolt Plasmid found at the Gatherer’s Garden, it forms the "one-two punch" combo. Zapping an enemy and following up with a melee strike deals significantly increased damage. In this initial stage, the goal is to reach the Kashmir Restaurant. Focus on looting every crate and trash can, as EVE and First Aid kits are scarce.

Medical Pavilion: Confronting Dr. Steinman

This level serves as the true tutorial for BioShock’s deeper mechanics. After meeting the security bot (which should be hacked immediately), the path leads to the Eternal Flame Crematorium. Here, obtaining the Incinerate! Plasmid is vital for melting ice barriers throughout the pavilion.

The Steinman Boss Fight: Dr. Steinman moves quickly and uses a machine gun. The key to this fight is using the environment. The water puddles on the floor are perfect for Electro Bolt, and the oil slicks can be ignited with Incinerate!. Avoid standing still; Steinman’s accuracy is high, so circular strafing while using the shotgun (found earlier in the level) is the most effective tactic.

Neptune’s Bounty: The Hunt for Peach Wilkins

Neptune’s Bounty is an open, multi-tiered hub focused on the fishing industry. This is where the Research Camera is obtained. Before progressing to the wharf master's office, ensure photos are taken of the Spider Splicers crawling on the ceilings.

Dealing with Big Daddies: You will encounter Bouncer-class Big Daddies here. They are aggressive melee fighters. A reliable strategy involves leading them into a hallway pre-set with Proximity Mines or using Armor Piercing Rounds from the Pistol. If a Rosie-class appears, stay behind cover to avoid their rivet gun fire and use the Telekinesis Plasmid to catch and throw their grenades back at them.

Smuggler's Hideout and Arcadia: Restoring the Forest

Arcadia is a shift in atmosphere, focusing on the lush botanical gardens. The primary threat here is the Houdini Splicer, who teleports after taking damage. Watch for the red mist that indicates where they will reappear.

When the forest is poisoned by Ryan, the mission shifts to gathering ingredients for the Lazarus Vector. This involves backtracking to the Farmer’s Market. In the market, be wary of the apiary; use the smoker to keep the bees at bay while searching for the enzymes. Once the Lazarus Vector is created, returning to Langford’s office initiates a hold-the-line sequence. Turrets and security bots should be hacked beforehand to assist in the defense.

Fort Frolic: Sander Cohen’s Masterpiece

Fort Frolic is perhaps the most complex level in terms of layout. Sander Cohen tasks you with completing his "Quadtych" by killing four of his former disciples.

  1. Silas Cobb: Found in the submerged Rapture Records. He uses fire, so having a high EVE reserve for Electro Bolt or Winter Blast is helpful.
  2. Martin Finnegan: Located in the Frozen Tunnel. He will attempt to freeze you; counter this with Incinerate!.
  3. McDonagh and Fitzpatrick: These encounters are more straightforward but require navigating the crowded atrium and theater areas.

Note: Do not kill Sander Cohen when he appears after the masterpiece is finished. If left alive, he provides access to his private quarters later in Olympus Heights, which contains a Power to the People station.

Hephaestus: The Core of the City

This is the industrial heart of Rapture. The difficulty spikes here with an abundance of security cameras and turrets. The main objective is to find the components for an EMP bomb to disable Ryan’s security lock.

Navigating the Heat Loss Monitoring and Workshops requires heavy use of the Chemical Thrower. The Electric Gel ammo is particularly effective against the multiple Big Daddies patrolling the narrow walkways. In the Kyburz’s Office, be careful of the tripwire traps; use Telekinesis to move objects through them or simply crawl underneath.

Rapture Central Control: The Confrontation

This is a narrative-heavy level with no traditional combat until the very end. Follow the path through Ryan’s inner sanctum. After the cinematic events, the game enters its final act. The focus shifts from surviving Andrew Ryan to dismantling the new threat emerging from the shadows.

Olympus Heights and Apollo Square: Breaking the Mind Control

Following the twist, your health and EVE bars will begin to fluctuate due to the "Lot 192" mental instability. This makes combat unpredictable. The priority is reaching Suchong’s lab to find the antidote.

In Mercury Suites, the combat is dense. Use Target Dummy Plasmid to distract the mobs of Splicers while you locate the hidden doors behind the paintings in the apartments. Once the second dose of Lot 192 is taken in Apollo Square, your powers return to normal, and you can prepare for the final push.

Point Prometheus: Becoming the Protector

To reach the final area, you must disguise yourself as a Big Daddy. This requires collecting three pieces of the suit, a voice box, and the pheromones.

  • The Bodysuit: Found in the Failsafe Armored Escorts hub.
  • The Voice Box: Located in the Optimized Eugenics labs.
  • The Pheromones: Found in the Little Wonders facility.

Once the transformation is complete, you will lead a Little Sister through the Proving Grounds. This is an escort mission. The Little Sister will extract ADAM from corpses while you defend her from waves of Splicers. Use Cyclic Trap and hacked turrets to create a defensive perimeter around her. If she dies, another will emerge from a vent, but keeping the first one alive makes the process significantly faster.

The Final Boss: Frank Fontaine

The battle against Fontaine occurs in three distinct phases, each tied to an element: Fire, Ice, and Electricity.

  1. Phase 1 (Fire): Fontaine will charge at you and throw fireballs. Use Winter Blast to freeze him or the Grenade Launcher with Frag Grenades. When he returns to the central machine to recharge, use the ADAM syringe to drain him.
  2. Phase 2 (Ice): He switches to ice attacks. Switch your Plasmid to Incinerate! and use Armor Piercing Rounds from the Machine Gun. Stay mobile to avoid his freezing projectiles.
  3. Phase 3 (Electricity): In the final stage, he uses electrical bursts. The Chemical Thrower with Electric Gel is the most effective way to stun-lock him, preventing him from initiating his more dangerous attacks.

Once his health is depleted for the third time, the final cinematic will trigger based on how the Little Sisters were treated throughout the game.

Post-Game and Trophy Cleanup

If the goal is the "Brass Balls" achievement (completing the game on Hard without using a Vita-Chamber), ensure that Vita-Chambers are disabled in the options menu from the very beginning. Frequent saving is the only way to mitigate the risk of a sudden death from a stray grenade or a surprise Big Daddy encounter.

Before heading to the final elevator in Point Prometheus, double-check that all Power to the People stations have been used. There are 12 in total, and they are essential for maximizing weapon efficiency for the final fight. Additionally, ensure the Historian trophy is on track by verifying the count of Audio Diaries in each menu sub-section; once you leave for the Proving Grounds, there is no returning to previous areas.
