Starting the journey in Aspertia City feels different from the traditional Pokémon experience. In Pokémon Black Version 2, the game begins in the southwestern corner of Unova, moving through a series of new locations before hitting the familiar landmarks of the original games. This walkthrough covers the critical path from the start to the Quake Badge in Driftveil City, ensuring no essential items or encounters are missed.

Starting Out in Aspertia City

The adventure begins at the lookout in Aspertia City. After receiving the first Pokémon from Bianca, the immediate focus should be on navigating Route 19. Unlike previous iterations, the early game here rewards thorough exploration. On Route 19, Alder provides a brief tutorial, but the primary goal is reaching Floccesy Town.

Before leaving Aspertia, visit the Trainers' School. While the gym is initially locked, talking to the NPCs provides a general sense of the status conditions that define early-game battles. Once on Route 19, look for a Potion hidden in the grass. The wild encounters here, such as Patrat and Purrloin, are standard, but they serve as essential fodder for leveling the starter to at least level 8 before reaching the ranch.

Floccesy Ranch and the Riolu Hunt

Upon arriving in Floccesy Town, Alder tasks the player with delivering a Town Map to the rival, Hugh, at Floccesy Ranch. This area is the first major opportunity to diversify the team.

The encounter table at Floccesy Ranch includes a 5% chance to find Riolu. While rare, Riolu is a highly recommended addition because its Fighting-type moves, specifically Force Palm learned at level 15, make the first gym significantly easier. Other notable encounters include Mareep (5% rate) for Electric coverage and Azurill for those looking for a Fairy-type pivot later.

The quest involves finding a lost Herdier. Head to the northern forest of the ranch. A Team Plasma grunt is hiding here; after a brief confrontation, he hands over TM21 (Frustration). Returning the Herdier to the owner triggers the progression needed to challenge the Aspertia Gym.

The First Hurdle: Aspertia Gym

Returning to Aspertia City, the gym is now open. Cheren, the former rival, serves as the Normal-type Gym Leader.

Cheren's Team:

  • Patrat (Lv. 11): Tackle, Leer, Work Up
  • Lillipup (Lv. 13): Tackle, Leer, Work Up

The strategy here revolves around preventing Cheren from stacking Work Up boosts. If a Riolu was caught at the ranch, its Fighting moves provide a type advantage. If not, utilizing a Patrat or Lillipup with high Speed is necessary to chip away at his health. Clyde at the entrance provides a Fresh Water, which should be saved for the Lillipup battle. Victory earns the Basic Badge and TM83 (Work Up).

Virbank City and Pokéstar Studios

After obtaining the Basic Badge, the path leads through Route 20 to Virbank City. This industrial hub is home to the second gym and the Pokéstar Studios side activity.

Before challenging Roxie, it is advisable to visit the Virbank Complex. The tall grass here contains Magby (version exclusive to Black 2) and Elekid (exclusive to White 2). Magnemite is also available here and is arguably one of the best early-game catches due to its Steel typing, which provides numerous resistances against Roxie’s Poison-type team.

Roxie’s Gym Battle:

  • Koffing (Lv. 16): Assurance, Smog, Venoshock
  • Whirlipede (Lv. 18): Pursuit, Poison Sting, Venoshock

Roxie’s strategy relies on poisoning the player's Pokémon to double the power of Venoshock. Using a Magnemite nullifies her Poison attacks entirely. After winning, the Toxic Badge is granted, and the player is prompted to visit Pokéstar Studios to film a movie. This is a mandatory story beat before taking the boat to Castelia City.

The Castelia City Sewers and the Hidden Park

Arriving in Castelia City, the scale of the game increases. Hugh immediately demands help searching for Team Plasma in the sewers. This segment involves a multi-battle system where Hugh heals the player's team after every fight, making it an excellent location for grinding levels.

Deep in the sewers, look for a set of stairs that were previously blocked. These lead up to a small, enclosed area known as Castelia Park. This is the only place in the game to catch wild Eevee (5% encounter rate). For players of Black 2, Cottonee is also available here, providing the Prankster ability which is invaluable for status-based strategies.

After clearing the sewers, Colress appears for the first time. He is a scientist interested in the potential of Pokémon. Following this encounter, the Castelia Gym becomes accessible. Burgh, the Bug-type specialist, uses a team that is susceptible to Fire and Flying moves. A Magby from the Virbank Complex or a Growlithe from the same area makes this battle straightforward.

Route 4: The Black 2 Exclusive Town

Exiting Castelia to the north leads to Route 4. This is where the version differences become most apparent. In Black 2, the construction seen in the original games is finished, resulting in a bustling, modern town. This is a stark contrast to the desert ruins found in White 2.

Colress blocks the path with a group of Crustle. Using his specialized device, he clears the way and then challenges the player to a battle.

Colress Battle:

  • Magnemite (Lv. 21): Mirror Shot, Thunder Wave, Spark
  • Klink (Lv. 23): Gear Grind, Thundershock, Charge

Colress uses Steel-type Pokémon, so Ground or Fighting moves are essential. The town on Route 4 contains several helpful NPCs. In the first house on the right, a girl gives a Health Wing if shown a Pokémon with sufficient Speed. Another resident offers to trade a Petilil for a Cottonee, which is the only way to obtain the White 2 exclusive Petilil in this version.

Join Avenue and Nimbasa City

North of Route 4 is Join Avenue, a management simulator where players can open shops. It is beneficial to invite NPCs frequently, as the shops provide discounted items and stat-boosting services later in the game.

Nimbasa City is the next destination. Before the gym, the player must face Ingo and Emmet in a Multi Battle alongside the female/male protagonist (Rosa/Nate) in front of the Battle Subway.

Elesa's Gym has moved from the roller coaster to a fashion runway. Her strategy remains centered on Volt Switch, a move that allows her to deal damage and switch out simultaneously.

Elesa's Team:

  • Emolga (Lv. 28): Aerial Ace, Volt Switch, Quick Attack
  • Flaaffy (Lv. 28): Take Down, Volt Switch, Thunder Wave
  • Zebstrika (Lv. 30): Flame Charge, Volt Switch, Spark

Ground-type Pokémon are immune to Volt Switch, but Emolga is a Flying-type, making it immune to Ground moves. A combination of Rock-type moves for Emolga and Ground-type moves for the others is the safest approach. The Sandile found on Route 4 is an excellent counter here.

The Path to Driftveil City

Heading west from Nimbasa leads to Route 5. Here, Bianca introduces the Hidden Grotto mechanic. These are small gaps in trees that contain Pokémon with Hidden Abilities or rare items. The first Grotto always contains a Minccino with Skill Link.

Crossing the Driftveil Drawbridge leads to Driftveil City. Upon arrival, a conflict between the old Team Plasma (followers of N) and the new Team Plasma (followers of Ghetsis) is unfolding. After following the ex-Team Plasma member to a house in the north of the city, the player must battle Rood.

Rood’s Battle:

  • Herdier (Lv. 27)
  • Swoobat (Lv. 27)

After defeating him, Rood offers the player N’s Zorua. This level 25 Dark-type Pokémon has a boosted experience gain because its original trainer is N. It is a powerful addition for the upcoming gym and the mid-game challenges.

Challenging Clay: The Quake Badge

The Driftveil Gym is a dark, elevator-based puzzle. Step on the platforms to light up the path. Clay, the Ground-type specialist, is the final hurdle of this section.

Clay's Team:

  • Krokorok (Lv. 31): Torment, Crunch, Bulldoze
  • Sandslash (Lv. 31): Fury Swipes, Rollout, Bulldoze
  • Excadrill (Lv. 33): Metal Claw, Rock Tomb, Slash, Bulldoze

Excadrill is the primary threat due to its high Attack and Steel/Ground typing. Water, Grass, and Fighting moves are highly effective. If the Zorua obtained from Rood has been leveled, its high Special Attack can help, though caution is needed against Clay's physical moves. Defeating Clay earns the Quake Badge and TM78 (Bulldoze).

Essential Item Checklist for Early Game

To maximize the efficiency of this walkthrough, ensure these items are collected:

  1. Exp. Share: Obtained from the janitor in the Castelia City Battle Company building after defeating him.
  2. Quick Claw: Talk to the lady on the first floor of the apartment building north of the Pokémon Center in Floccesy Town.
  3. Silver Powder: Found in the Castelia Sewers, useful for boosting Bug-type moves.
  4. Amulet Coin: Found behind a sign in the northernmost part of Castelia City (Central Plaza). This doubles prize money from battles.
  5. TM28 (Dig): Found on Route 4 in a house on the western path, vital for the Nimbasa Gym.

Version Exclusive Reminders

In Black 2, the habitat list is slightly different. Players should prioritize catching Magby in the Virbank Complex, as its evolved form, Magmortar, is a top-tier Fire-type. Additionally, the urbanization of Route 4 allows for more frequent trainer battles, which helps in maintaining a higher average team level compared to White 2 players who must navigate the desert sandstorms.

By following this route and focusing on a balanced team—ideally including a Fighting-type like Riolu, a Steel-type like Magnemite, and the gift Zorua—the first half of the Unova region becomes a manageable and rewarding experience. The next stage of the journey involves the Pokémon World Tournament (PWT), which opens up immediately after Clay's defeat.
