Dark Souls 1 Walkthrough: Navigating Lordran Without the Stress
Lordran is a place that punishes impatience but rewards observation. While the world of Dark Souls 1 is interconnected and non-linear, following a structured path can prevent unnecessary frustration, especially regarding weapon upgrades and area difficulty. This walkthrough outlines the most efficient route through the game, including the Remastered edition, ensuring no critical items or NPC steps are missed.
Starting out: Preparation and character creation
Choosing the right starting gift can significantly alter the early game experience. The Master Key is generally considered the most valuable item, as it opens numerous shortcuts that allow for early access to powerful equipment like the Crimson Set or the Red Tearstone Ring. For a first playthrough, starting as a Warrior or Knight provides a solid foundation of HP and physical defense. However, the Bandit class is often preferred for those aiming for a Strength-based "Giant Dad" or heavy hitter build due to its optimized stat distribution.
Upon arrival at the Northern Undead Asylum, the focus is on basic mechanics. The Asylum Demon can be bypassed initially through the small door on the left; facing him later with a proper weapon and a plunging attack makes the fight trivial. Once in Firelink Shrine, avoid the graveyard and New Londo Ruins for now, as the enemies there are scaled for higher levels. Instead, head up the cliff toward the Undead Burg.
The first bell: From Undead Burg to the Parish
The Undead Burg serves as the game's primary tutorial area. The goal is to reach the Taurus Demon on the battlements. A helpful strategy involves climbing the ladder behind the fog gate to eliminate the two crossbow hollows first, then using plunging attacks on the boss.
After the fight, meeting Solaire of Astora is crucial for obtaining the White Sign Soapstone, which enables co-op play. In the Undead Parish, the priority shifts to Blacksmith Andre. Upgrading a standard weapon to +5 using Titanite Shards (which Andre sells) is more beneficial than leveling up your character's Strength or Dexterity at this stage.
The Bell Gargoyles atop the Parish church are the first major skill check. Cutting the tail of the first gargoyle yields the Gargoyle Tail Axe. Once defeated, ring the first Bell of Awakening. Don't forget to free Knight Lautrec from his cell nearby; his presence at Firelink Shrine leads to a specific questline involving the Fire Keeper.
Descent into darkness: Lower Burg, Depths, and Blighttown
With the Basement Key found near the Parish gate, return to the bridge where the Hellkite Wyvern breathes fire to access the Lower Undead Burg. This area is tight and filled with dogs and assassins. The Capra Demon boss fight is notoriously difficult due to the cramped arena. Entering the fog and immediately heading for the stairs to separate the dogs from the demon is a reliable tactic.
Defeating Capra grants the Key to the Depths. In the Depths, locate the Large Ember near the first butcher—this allows Andre to upgrade weapons to +10. The Gaping Dragon boss provides a large number of souls and the key to Blighttown.
Blighttown is often the point where players feel overwhelmed. If using the Master Key, a shortcut through the Valley of Drakes leads directly to the bottom of the swamp, skipping the treacherous upper scaffolding. The objective is Chaos Witch Quelaag. Her fire-based attacks are devastating, but her human half is vulnerable to stagger. After ringing the second Bell of Awakening, a hidden wall in the room below the lever reveals the Fair Lady, leader of the Chaos Servant covenant.
The mid-game gauntlet: Sen's Fortress and Anor Londo
Once both bells ring, Sen's Fortress opens. This area is a vertical obstacle course of swinging blades and pressure plates. High poise or a fast-rolling build is recommended here. The Iron Golem at the top can be staggered easily, and even knocked off the platform if positioned correctly.
Anor Londo represents the peak of Dark Souls' challenge and beauty. Navigating the infamous rafters and the two silver knight archers on the narrow ledge requires patience and a shield with high stability. The culmination of this area is the boss fight against Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough. Choosing which one to kill first determines which armor and soul you can acquire. Defeating them grants the Lordvessel, enabling fast travel between key bonfires.
Collecting the Lord Souls
With the Lordvessel, four paths open. The order in which these are tackled depends on your build, but a balanced progression is as follows:
- The Duke's Archives & Crystal Cave: Located near Anor Londo. This area is essential for Sorcery builds. Cutting Seath the Scaleless's middle tail provides the Moonlight Greatsword.
- New Londo Ruins: You must first acquire the Covenant of Artorias by defeating Great Grey Wolf Sif in Darkroot Garden. Lowering the water level in New Londo reveals the path to the Four Kings. This fight is a DPS (Damage Per Second) test; wearing heavy armor like the Stone Set and staying close to the kings often works better than trying to dodge every attack.
- The Catacombs & Tomb of the Giants: Best tackled after obtaining a light source (like the Sunlight Maggot or Cast Light spell). Defeating Pinwheel provides the Rite of Kindling, allowing you to kindle bonfires for 20 Estus Flasks. Gravelord Nito awaits at the end of the Tomb.
- Demon Ruins & Lost Izalith: After defeating Ceaseless Discharge, the lava recedes. This area leads to the Bed of Chaos. Unlike other bosses, this is a platforming puzzle. It is recommended to quit the game after destroying each side of the "cradle" to reset your position at the fog gate, making the final jump to the core safer.
Accessing the DLC: Artorias of the Abyss
The DLC content contains some of the best boss fights in the series but requires specific steps to access:
- Kill the Hydra in Darkroot Basin.
- Rescue Dusk of Oolacile from the Golden Crystal Golem behind the Hydra.
- Obtain the Broken Pendant from a Crystal Golem at the start of the Duke's Archives.
- Return to where you rescued Dusk to find a black portal.
Defeating Knight Artorias, Manus, and the dragon Kalameet provides high-tier rewards and concludes the lore surrounding the Abyss.
The final encounter: Kiln of the First Flame
Once the Lordvessel is filled with the four Lord Souls, the path to the Kiln of the First Flame opens. The Black Knights here are excellent for farming late-game upgrade materials. Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, is the final boss. While his attacks are relentless, he is one of the few bosses in the game that can be parried. Successfully parrying his opening leap and subsequent swings can end the fight quickly.
Upon victory, the choice remains to link the fire or usher in the Age of Dark. Both lead to New Game Plus (NG+), where enemy health and damage increase, but your equipment and stats carry over.
Essential survival tips for every area
- Weapon Scaling vs. Base Damage: In the early game, focus on your weapon's base damage through Titanite upgrades. Scaling (S, A, B, etc.) only becomes significant once your Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Faith reaches 30 or higher.
- The Importance of Poise: Poise, provided by heavier armor, prevents you from being staggered when hit. This is often the difference between winning a trade and being stun-locked to death.
- Kindling: Always kindle bonfires in difficult areas like Sen's Fortress or Anor Londo. Having 10 or 15 Estus Flasks provides a much larger margin for error during exploration.
- Humanity and Item Discovery: Carrying "Soft" Humanity (the number in the top left) increases your item discovery rate up to a cap of 10. This is useful for farming rare drops like the Black Knight Halberd or Balder Side Sword.
- NPC Quests: Most NPC stories move forward when you talk to them in multiple locations. If an NPC disappears, they have likely moved to the next area of their journey. Be cautious, as some choices can lead to their early demise or prevent them from becoming vendors later.
