Dark Souls Mimic Survival: Chain Signs and Farming the Symbol of Avarice
Finding a treasure chest in the world of Dark Souls usually triggers a moment of relief, but for seasoned adventurers, it prompts a cautious pause. The Mimic, a predatory creature disguised as a wooden chest, remains one of the most iconic and lethal traps in the series. These monsters do not merely guard treasure; they embody the player's greed, waiting to devour anyone who interacts with them without due diligence. Surviving these encounters requires a keen eye for visual cues and a strategic understanding of their combat mechanics.
Visual Identification: The Subtle Tells
A Mimic is nearly identical to a standard treasure chest, but it possesses three distinct physical giveaways. Recognizing these signs before pressing the interaction button is the difference between a successful loot and a quick death.
The Chain Pattern
To the right of every chest in Dark Souls is a small metal chain. This is the most reliable indicator of a Mimic. On a normal, safe chest, the chain is curved, looping back toward the rear of the chest in a semi-circle. On a Mimic, the chain is straightened out, pointing forward toward the player. A simple mnemonic used by the community is: "If the chain is curved like a 'C', the chest is for thee. If the chain is straight like an 'S', it's a Sinister mess."
Breathing Animations
Mimics are living organisms, and they require oxygen. If you stand still and observe a chest for roughly 10 to 17 seconds, a Mimic will perform a breathing animation. The lid will slightly lift, revealing a row of finger-bone teeth and a slight movement as the creature takes a breath. Using a pair of Binoculars or a Bow's zoom feature makes this movement much easier to spot from a safe distance.
Color and Texture
While lighting conditions vary across environments like the Duke's Archives or Anor Londo, Mimics generally have a paler, more weathered wooden texture compared to the richer, darker tones of authentic chests. This is often harder to discern in the heat of exploration, making the chain check the primary method of verification.
Combat Mechanics and the Lethal Grab
Interacting with a Mimic while it is in its chest form triggers a high-damage grab attack. The creature pulls the player into its mouth and chews, which often results in an instant kill for players with low Vitality. If you are caught in this grab, rapidly tapping the bumper buttons (L1/R1 or LB/RB) can reduce the damage taken and potentially allow you to escape with a sliver of health.
Once a Mimic is struck or fails its grab, it unfolds into its true form: a gangly, long-limbed humanoid with a massive tongue. Its moveset is surprisingly agile:
- The Roundhouse Kick: A high-knockback spinning kick that can easily throw players off ledges.
- Flying Kick: A lunging attack used to close the gap if the player tries to retreat and heal.
- The Standing Grab: Even in its upright form, the Mimic can attempt to grab the player again. This move is slow but should be dodged to the side, not backward.
For melee builds, staying behind the Mimic is the safest strategy. Its turning speed is relatively slow, allowing for a few hits before you need to reposition. For magic or ranged builds, maintaining distance is key, though you must be wary of its leaping closing attacks.
The Peaceful Alternative: Lloyd's Talismans
You do not have to kill a Mimic to obtain its treasure. Throwing a Lloyd's Talisman (known as an Undead Hunter Charm in later entries) at a dormant Mimic will put it into a deep sleep. The lid will open, and the creature will yawn, allowing you to walk up and take the item inside as if it were a normal chest. This does not aggro the Mimic. After a short duration, it will close its mouth and return to its disguised state. This method is essential for farming rare drops without depleting the limited number of Mimics in a single playthrough.
Essential Locations in Dark Souls 1
In the original Dark Souls and its Remastered version, there are exactly nine Mimics. They do not respawn once killed. Each carries a specific, high-value item, often a weapon infused with an element you might not have access to yet.
- Sen's Fortress: Located in a room after the boulder-path. It drops the Lightning Spear, a powerful weapon for early-to-mid-game faith or quality builds.
- Anor Londo (Sentinel Room): Guarded by two giants near the entrance to the Duke's Archives. It contains the Crystal Halberd.
- Anor Londo (Havel's Room): Found behind an illusory wall in the basement of the manor. This Mimic is surrounded by four real chests and contains the Occult Club.
- Anor Londo (Spiral Stairs): Two Mimics are found on the upper floors near the spinning elevator. They drop Gold and Silver Coins.
- The Duke's Archives: One on a balcony near the first encounter with Seath, dropping a Crystal Knight Shield. Another is near the exit to the garden, dropping an Enchanted Falchion.
- Oolacile Township (DLC): One on a tower roof (contains the Crest Key) and another inside a building filled with bloatheads (contains the Very Good! Carving).
Mimic Variations in Dark Souls 3
Dark Souls 3 increased the frequency and variety of Mimics. Notably, they appear as early as the High Wall of Lothric, where a Mimic under the wyvern's perch guards the Deep Battle Axe.
Key locations in DS3 include:
- Cathedral of the Deep: Found near the altar past the giant slave; drops the Deep Braille Divine Tome.
- Irithyll Dungeon: This area is notorious for multiple Mimics, including one that provides an Estus Shard and another paired with a basilisk ambush.
- Profaned Capital: Two Mimics sit side-by-side near Yhorm the Giant's boss room, containing a Greatshield of Glory and Rusted Gold Coins.
Farming the Symbol of Avarice
The Symbol of Avarice is a rare headpiece shaped like a Mimic's head. It significantly boosts Item Discovery and Soul gain but steadily drains the wearer's HP. Obtaining this item is a priority for anyone looking to farm rare materials like Titanite Slabs or Balder Side Swords.
The Guaranteed Drop (DS1)
In Dark Souls 1 (Patch 1.05 and later), if you kill every Mimic in the game, the very last one you slay is guaranteed to drop the Symbol of Avarice. If you have reached the final Mimic in the Duke's Archives or Oolacile and still haven't seen the drop, ensure you have checked all previous locations.
The Lloyd's Talisman Farming Method
If you want the item early, or if you are playing Dark Souls 3 where the drop is not guaranteed by total kills, use the following steps:
- Locate a living Mimic.
- Throw a Lloyd's Talisman (or Undead Hunter Charm) at it.
- Check the open mouth for the item. If the Symbol of Avarice isn't there, wait for the Mimic to close its mouth or punch it once (with bare fists to avoid killing it) to wake it up.
- Wait for it to reset or throw another Talisman immediately once it starts to close.
- Repeat this loop. Using the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring or having 10 soft Humanity will speed up the process by increasing your base Item Discovery.
Advanced Tactics and Cheese Strategies
For those who prefer to avoid a direct brawl with these lanky horrors, several environmental and status-based tactics are highly effective.
Status Effects
Mimics are vulnerable to Poison and Toxic damage. Using the Poison Mist or Toxic Mist pyromancies on a dormant Mimic will slowly drain its health without ever waking it up. This allows you to stand back and watch the creature die while it remains in its chest form, making it a completely risk-free encounter.
Environmental Hazards
In Sen's Fortress, the Mimic is positioned near the path of the rolling boulders. By timing its aggro correctly, you can lure the Mimic into the path of a boulder. Two hits from the heavy stone spheres are usually enough to finish it off. Similarly, in Dark Souls 3, Mimics are hostile to other enemies. You can lure a Mimic into a group of demons or knights, and they will often fight each other, allowing you to finish off the survivor.
The Ladder Limitation
Mimics, despite their long limbs, are unable to climb ladders. If you find yourself overwhelmed in an area like Irithyll Dungeon, retreating to a ladder and using plunging attacks or ranged spells is a reliable way to whittle down their health.
Lore and Origins
While largely seen as gameplay obstacles, Mimics have a dark history within the lore. They were once a clan of the gods who committed the sin of greed. Their punishment was a curse that transformed their physical forms into an imitation of treasure, a physical manifestation of their avarice. Their limbs are composed of the bones of previous victims, and their "treasures" are often just the undigested belongings of those they have eaten. This explains why they are often found in areas associated with divine power or ancient hoards, such as Anor Londo or the Profaned Capital.
By understanding these patterns—the straight chain, the slow breath, and the utility of the Lloyd's Talisman—the Mimic ceases to be a terrifying trap and becomes a valuable source of equipment. Whether you choose to cheese them with poison or face them head-on with a blade, always remember to check the chain before you reach for the lid.
