Duchess Remembrance Quest Walkthrough: How to Unlock and Finish Every Step
The Duchess functions as the Priestess of the Round Table Hold in Elden Ring Nightreign, offering players one of the most mechanically rewarding and narratively rich questlines in the game. Completing her remembrance quest is not only essential for understanding the lore behind the Nightfarers but also for acquiring powerful relics that significantly enhance her combat capabilities. This guide covers the entire progression from initial character unlock to the final blessing of the iron coin.
How to Unlock the Duchess
Unlike several other characters who are available from the onset or through specific boss defeats, the Duchess is tied to the expedition loot system. To add her to your roster, you must obtain the Old Pocket Watch.
This item is a random drop found during expeditions. There is no fixed location for the watch; however, it appears most frequently in chests or as loot from elite enemies in the Lim Veld region. Once the Old Pocket Watch is in your possession, the Duchess will be unlocked, and her journal will become accessible in the Round Table Hold.
Understanding the Journal and Memory Fragments
The Duchess’s story is gated behind her Journal. To progress through the chapters (totaling nine), players must collect Memory Fragments. These are not physical inventory items but progress markers that trigger automatically.
Efficient Fragment Farming
Acquiring fragments is subject to RNG, but the drop rates correlate with your performance during expeditions:
- Day 1 Failures: It is rare to see a fragment drop if you perish on the first day.
- Day 2 Survivals: You have a moderate chance of triggering a fragment notification.
- Day 3 Survivals: Fragments are frequently awarded if you reach the final day of an expedition.
- Night Lord Victories: Defeating a Night Lord (such as Gladius, Beast of Night) almost guarantees a memory fragment for your active character.
If you find yourself stuck on a specific chapter, it is often suggested to complete at least one full expedition successfully to reset the internal drop table or fulfill hidden prerequisites like defeating a specific number of unique Night Lords.
Remembrance 1: The Golden Dew (Chapter 3)
Upon unlocking the Duchess and collecting initial fragments, Chapter 3 opens the first true remembrance quest. This mission establishes the relationship between the Duchess, the Raider, and Wylder.
Quest Steps
- Initiation: Accept the quest from the journal. This transports you to the "Realm of Remembrances."
- The Roundtable Meeting: Speak to the Raider in the main room. He will direct you to Wylder, located in the room adjacent to the journal archives. After speaking with Wylder, return to the Raider.
- The Expedition: Start any expedition. Look for a marker in the southwestern portion of the map.
- Combat with the Guardians: At the objective, three Guardians of the Dew will spawn. These enemies are not heavy hitters individually, but they possess high coordination. It is advisable to use the Duchess’s quick maneuvers to separate them. Their poise is relatively low, so aggressive chain attacks are effective.
- The Return: After claiming the Golden Dew, finish the expedition. Return to the Round Table Hold and speak to Wylder, then the Raider.
- Finalizing: Speak to the Revenant on the western side of the Hold, then find the Iron Menial in the Visual Codex room. A ghostly spring will appear near him; interact with it to conclude the remembrance.
Reward: Golden Dew (Relic). This item improves character skill attack power and boosts affinity-based attacks, making it a staple for elemental builds.
Remembrance 2: The Search for Wylder (Chapter 5)
This remembrance is more focused on navigation and world interaction within the Round Table Hold itself. It unlocks after you have completed the previous quest and defeated at least one Night Lord.
Finding the Scent
Wylder has gone missing from his usual spot. To find him, head to the broken dining area connected to the garden. Exit through the hole in the wall and turn left. You will find Wylder slumped against a wall. A unique mechanic here is the "aroma" text that appears on your screen as you get closer to his location.
The Bread Interaction
Interact with Wylder and choose to eat the pita bread he has prepared. This small narrative moment is required to progress. Afterward, locate the Iron Menial and discuss the bread. This seemingly minor interaction triggers the conclusion of the chapter at a ghostly spring.
Reward: Duchess’ Chalice. This is a transformative relic for the Duchess, as it grants her one blue, one yellow, and one universal relic slot, allowing for much greater customization of her kit.
Remembrance 3: The Weathervane and the Duel (Chapter 6)
Chapter 6 presents one of the more complex segments of the questline, involving a choice between following the Raider's instructions or the Revenant's request. To maximize rewards, it is recommended to fulfill both objectives before concluding the remembrance.
The Raider’s Path
Speak to the Raider in the dining room. He mentions the "Weathervane’s Words." During an expedition, a marker will appear in the northeastern section of the map. You will face three Fallen Mercenaries.
Strategy Note: These mercenaries are significantly tougher than the Guardians of the Dew. They block frequently and have high health. However, the game retains damage dealt to them even if you die. If the fight is too difficult, you can wear them down through multiple attempts by respawning at a nearby Site of Grace.
The Revenant’s Duel
Following the letter from the Revenant, head to the southeastern beach of the Round Table Hold. Here, you must duel the Revenant. Her move set involves golden disc incantations that behave like boomerangs.
- Dodge Timing: Always account for the return path of the discs.
- Summons: She will summon slow-moving spirits. While you can ignore them to focus on her, it is often safer to clear them if the arena becomes too crowded.
Once the Revenant is defeated, she grants you the Crown Medal key item. Combine this with the Raider’s objective to complete the quest.
Reward: Crown Medal (Relic). This relic allows dagger chain attacks to reprise events upon nearby enemies and significantly improves overall dagger damage.
Remembrance 4: Blessing the Iron Coin (Chapter 8)
To unlock the final chapter, you must demonstrate mastery by defeating four unique Night Lords with the Duchess. This is a substantial hurdle that requires a well-optimized build.
The Final Ritual
- Blessing at the Table: Once the quest starts, go to the Table of Lost Grace in the center of the Hold and interact with it to bless the Iron Coin.
- The Catacombs: Head to the Visual Codex room, go down the stairs, and take a sharp U-turn left down another set of stairs to reach the catacombs. Give the blessed coin to the Iron Menial.
- The Final Conversation: Speak to Wylder, who is now standing by the fireplace near the outfit wardrobe.
- Completion: Return to the Iron Menial one last time. The final ghostly spring will appear.
Rewards:
- Duchess’ Remembrance Outfit: A unique cosmetic that marks the completion of her journey.
- Blessed Iron Coin (Relic): This powerful item increases attack power whenever a character art is active, provides continuous HP recovery, and grants +3 to Vigor.
Strategic Recommendations for Duchess Builds
The rewards from these quests suggest a specific playstyle for the Duchess. The combination of the Golden Dew and the Crown Medal turns her into a high-pressure, affinity-based DPS.
Skill Synergy
By the time you reach Chapter 8, you should focus on maximizing the uptime of your character arts to take advantage of the Blessed Iron Coin. The continuous HP recovery provided by the coin allows the Duchess to stay in the fray longer, compensating for her lower base defense compared to the Guardian or the Executor.
Expedition Tips
When running expeditions to farm the remaining fragments or to hunt Night Lords:
- Pathing: Always aim for the orange flags on the map; these indicate quest-specific mines or objectives that often contain higher fragment drop rates.
- Leveling: In the quests involving the Guardians or Mercenaries, spend the first few minutes of the expedition killing trash mobs. Entering these fights at Level 3 or 4 makes the poise-breaking much more consistent.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
The next chapter won't unlock even though I have fragments. Check if you have defeated the required number of unique Night Lords. The transition from Chapter 7 to 8 specifically requires four different boss victories. Repeating the same boss (like Tricephalos) will not count toward this specific total.
I can't find the Iron Menial in the Catacombs. The layout of the Round Table Hold can be disorienting. From the Visual Codex room (where the books are), look for the stairs leading down. At the bottom, do not go straight; turn 180 degrees and you will see a second, narrower set of stairs. This leads directly to the Iron Menial’s sanctuary.
The Revenant duel is too hard. If the Revenant is proving too difficult, ensure you have equipped the Duchess’ Chalice and filled the universal slot with a relic that improves dodge i-frames or reduces stamina consumption. Her maneuvers are her best defense.
By following these steps, you will successfully navigate the complexities of the Duchess's remembrance quest and unlock her full potential as one of the most versatile Nightfarers in Elden Ring Nightreign.
