The transition into the third act of Final Fantasy VIII marks a significant shift in tone and scope. Following the brutal conflict between Balamb and Galbadia Gardens, Squall finds himself burdened with the leadership of SeeD and the personal Weight of Rinoa’s mysterious coma. This FF8 walkthrough disc 3 focuses on the journey to the high-tech nation of Esthar, the secrets of the Centra continent, and the eventual venture into the cold vacuum of space.

Starting Out: Post-War Recovery and Edea’s House

When control returns to Squall on the bridge of Balamb Garden, your primary objective is to find a way to wake Rinoa. However, before rushing off, ensure your Guardian Forces (GFs) are optimally set. Alexander, obtained at the end of Disc 2, should begin learning High-Mag-RF and Elem-Defx4 immediately. This skill is vital for late-game survivability.

Head to the Training Center. Take the left path to find a copy of Weapons Monthly July on the ground. Once you are ready, pilot the Garden to Edea’s House (the Orphanage) located on the southwestern tip of the Centra continent.

Inside the house, you will find a copy of Timber Maniacs. Speak with Cid and Edea. Edea provides crucial context regarding Ultimecia, the sorceress from the future. For Triple Triad enthusiasts, this is a prime opportunity to win the Edea Card. Be warned: the Centra region often uses the frustrating "Random" and "Plus" rules. To simplify your card game career, consider abolishing these rules by carrying Balamb's "Open" rule and refusing to mix rules multiple times until the local player agrees to play with your preferred set.

Finding the White Seed Ship

Edea mentions that Ellone is with the White Seeds. Locating their ship is one of the most common points where players get stuck in an FF8 walkthrough disc 3. The ship is not marked on the map and is tucked away in a small, narrow inlet on the northern coast of the Centra continent.

Look for a cluster of islands and a deeply recessed bay near the area where the mountains meet the sea. You must maneuver the Garden into this tight space. Once you board the ship, speak to Watts and Zone (former members of the Forest Owls). If you still have the "Girl Next Door" magazine from earlier in the game, give it to Zone for free to receive the Shiva Card and a Rename Card.

Speak to the White Seed leader in the back cabin. He reveals that Ellone is no longer with them; she has been taken to Esthar. This sets your next major destination.

The Journey to the Great Salt Lake

Since Balamb Garden cannot cross the massive cliffs surrounding Esthar, you must head to Fisherman’s Horizon (FH). Squall will carry Rinoa across the long railway bridge in a poignant sequence. At the end of the bridge, you enter the Great Salt Lake, a desolate, crystallized landscape that serves as the gateway to the hidden continent.

Boss Battle: Abaddon

The path through the lake is linear but aesthetically confusing. Follow the skeletal remains upward and to the right. You will eventually encounter Abaddon, an undead boss.

  • Strategy: Because Abaddon is undead, he is extremely vulnerable to healing magic and items. You can end the fight instantly by using a Phoenix Down or an X-Potion. Alternatively, have a character with the "Recover" or "Revive" ability use it on him. For those looking to farm, you can Mug him for a Power Wrist before finishing him off.

Beyond the boss, you will notice a shimmering distortion in the air. This is the entrance to the Esthar Cloaking Shield. Examine the flickering screen to reveal a hidden elevator that transports the party into the silent, futuristic metropolis.

Exploring the Silent City of Esthar

Esthar is a massive, sprawling city with a complex transport system. Upon arrival, you will experience another Laguna dream sequence. This one takes place in the Esthar Laboratory. It is relatively straightforward: fight the Esthar soldiers, find the Weapons Monthly 1st Issue, and rescue young Ellone from Dr. Odine’s experimentation.

Back in the present, Squall meets the real Dr. Odine. The doctor agrees to help you see Ellone if you follow his instructions. While exploring Esthar, visit the Shopping Mall. Repeatedly clicking on the closed shops can eventually yield rewards, including the Occult Fan IV.

The Lunatic Pandora Mission

Dr. Odine informs you that the Lunatic Pandora, a massive floating monolith, is approaching the city. You have a timed mission to intercept it at three different contact points.

  1. Point 1 (15:00 - 12:00 remaining): Center of the city.
  2. Point 2 (10:00 - 05:00 remaining): Northern skyway.
  3. Point 3 (03:00 - 00:00 remaining): Eastern skyway.

While getting on the Pandora is optional for story progression, it allows you to collect rare items like the Combat King 005. If you missed certain items during Laguna’s previous dreams (like the Old Key or the trap doors), you can access those areas now.

The Lunar Base and the Space Sequence

Following the Pandora incident, Squall takes Rinoa to the Lunar Gate. He, Rinoa, and one companion are launched into space to reach the Lunar Base, where Ellone is currently residing. Meanwhile, Zell stays behind to defend Esthar.

On the Lunar Base, you finally reunite with Ellone. However, the situation turns dire as the "Lunar Cry"—a massive migration of monsters from the moon to the Earth—begins. Rinoa, under the influence of Ultimecia, facilitates the release of the Sorceress Adel from her orbital prison.

This sequence is heavy on dialogue and plot. Your main task is to follow Rinoa through the station, though you cannot stop her. Eventually, after the station is evacuated, Squall makes a desperate leap into the vacuum of space to save Rinoa. This leads to the discovery of the derelict starship, the Ragnarok.

Clearing the Ragnarok: The Propagator Puzzle

The Ragnarok is infested with alien creatures known as Propagators. These enemies come in four colors: Purple, Red, Green, and Yellow. To permanently kill them, you must defeat them in pairs of the same color.

  1. Purple Pair: Defeat the first one in the cockpit area and the second one in the lounge.
  2. Red Pair: Found in the corridors.
  3. Green Pair: Usually located near the airlocks.
  4. Yellow Pair: Located in the lower bays.

If you kill a purple one and then a red one, the purple one will respawn when you leave the room. Follow the color-coded sequence to clear the ship. Once the Ragnarok is operational, Squall and Rinoa share a famous moment in the cockpit as they return to Earth.

Optional Content: Late Disc 3 Power Leveling

Once you have the Ragnarok, the world map is fully open. This is the best time in any FF8 walkthrough disc 3 to complete high-level side quests before the point of no return.

  • Deep Sea Research Center: Located in the extreme southwest corner of the map (not visible on the mini-map). Here you can fight Bahamut. If you descend further into the ruins (requiring Zell in your party and specific pressure management), you can face Ultima Weapon to draw the Eden GF, the most powerful GF in the game.
  • Cactuar Island: Located off the coast of the Kashkabald Desert. Defeat the giant Cactuar popping up on the world map to gain GF Cactuar. This GF is essential for its "Luck-J" and "Eva-J" abilities.
  • Doomtrain: To obtain this GF, you need the Solomon Ring from Tears' Point (Esthar) and several specific items: 6 Steel Pipes, 6 Remedy+, and 6 Malboro Tentacles. Use Alexander’s Med Data and Med LV Up to refine the Remedies.
  • Island Closest to Hell / Heaven: These islands (westernmost and easternmost points of the map) are inhabited by Level 100 monsters. They are perfect for drawing high-level magic like Meteor, Flare, and Holy from invisible draw points on the ground.

Finalizing the Disc: Meeting the President

Return to Esthar. You will finally meet the President of Esthar, who turns out to be Laguna Loire himself. This meeting ties together the various timelines and dream sequences. Laguna outlines a plan to enter the Lunatic Pandora and defeat Seifer and Adel to stop the time compression.

Before heading to the Pandora for the final confrontation of Disc 3, ensure your junctions are maximized. Use the "Card Mod" and "Ability Med-RF" skills to turn your rare cards into powerful magic like Triple and Full-Life.

The Lunatic Pandora Infiltration

Fly the Ragnarok directly into the side of the Lunatic Pandora. Inside, you will face Raijin and Fujin for the final time. They are loyal to Seifer but are beginning to doubt his path.

  • Boss: Raijin & Fujin: Focus on Fujin first, as her wind-based magic and "Sais" attack can be devastating. Junction Shell to your party to mitigate their magical damage. They are susceptible to Bio and Blind.

After defeating them, you move deeper into the structure to face Seifer. This battle is symbolic of the rivalry that has spanned the entire game. If you obtained the GF Odin in Disc 2, a unique (and shocking) cinematic sequence will occur during this fight, resulting in the acquisition of the GF Gilgamesh.

Defeating Seifer concludes the main events of Disc 3. Rinoa is captured once again, setting the stage for the final descent into time compression in Disc 4.

Essential Disc 3 Checklist

To ensure you haven't missed anything vital before the transition to the final disc, verify the following:

  1. GFs Collected: Do you have Alexander, Bahamut, Cactuar, Doomtrain, and Eden?
  2. Magic Stocks: Does your main party have 100 units of Ultima, Meteor, and Full-Life junctioned to their primary stats?
  3. Ultimate Weapons: Have you collected the necessary Adamantines and Dragon Fins to upgrade Squall’s Lionheart?
  4. Timber Maniacs: Have you collected all issues to see the full interaction in Selphie’s diary?

Disc 3 is the longest and most complex part of the game. By mastering the travel between Esthar and the stars, and utilizing the Ragnarok to its full potential, you are well-prepared for the final battle against Ultimecia.
