Finding and Catching Every Black 2 Legendary: A Pro Trainer Look at Locations and Tactics
Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 stand as some of the most content-rich entries in the entire franchise, specifically regarding the roster of high-tier encounters. Unlike many modern titles that hand out mythical creatures through menus, the Unova sequels require players to explore deep caves, solve environmental puzzles, and engage in high-stakes post-game quests. Tracking down every black 2 legendary involves understanding version exclusives, the unique Unova Link system, and specific map triggers that only occur after the Elite Four have been defeated.
The Swords of Justice: Mid-Game Encounters
One of the unique aspects of Black 2 is that several legendary Pokémon are encountered during the main story, rather than being gated behind the credits. The trio known as the Swords of Justice—Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion—effectively stalk the player across the region's routes.
Cobalion
Cobalion is the leader of the trio and the first one you will encounter. You will first see it on Route 6, but it will not engage in battle. To actually capture it, you must progress to Route 13. It stands waiting on a cliffside, impossible to miss as you traverse the path toward Lacunosa Town.
- Level: 45 (Level 65 if encountered after the Elite Four)
- Type: Steel/Fighting
- Moveset (Lv 45): Helping Hand, Retaliate, Iron Head, Sacred Sword
Its Steel typing makes it resistant to many status-inflicting moves like Poison or Sandstorm damage, but it also means it is susceptible to False Swipe—a move essential for lowering its HP to 1 without knocking it out.
Virizion
Virizion appears on Route 11, shortly after you pass through the Marine Tube. Similar to Cobalion, it is found standing directly in the overworld. Because Virizion is a Grass/Fighting type, it can be slightly more annoying to capture if you use Spore, as Grass types are immune to powder-based moves in later generations, though in Gen 5, this immunity was not yet fully implemented for Spore.
- Level: 45 (Level 65 post-game)
- Type: Grass/Fighting
- Moveset (Lv 45): Helping Hand, Retaliate, Giga Drain, Sacred Sword
Giga Drain can be a nuisance because the Pokémon will heal itself, undoing your progress with False Swipe. Bringing a Pokémon with the "Heal Block" move or a very high-level Ghost type can mitigate its offensive pressure.
Terrakion
Terrakion is located on Route 22, positioned on a small plateau. To reach it, you will need to use Strength to move boulders. Upon approaching, Colress will appear and give you the Colress Machine, which allows you to interact with Crustle blocking paths elsewhere, but Terrakion remains focused on the battle.
- Level: 45 (Level 65 post-game)
- Type: Rock/Fighting
- Moveset (Lv 45): Helping Hand, Retaliate, Rock Slide, Sacred Sword
Terrakion has the highest offensive stats of the three. Its Rock Slide can flinch your Pokémon, potentially wasting turns where you intended to use status moves or Poke Balls. High Defense Pokémon are recommended here.
The Legend of Kyurem and the Dragonspiral Trio
The central plot of Black 2 revolves around Kyurem and its fusion with the mascots of the original games. However, obtaining these Pokémon requires finishing the main story and following a specific chain of events.
Zekrom (Black 2 Exclusive)
In Black 2, you cannot catch Reshiram; you are locked into Zekrom. After defeating the Champion, you must travel to the ruins of N’s Castle. There, you will find N, who challenges you to a battle. Upon his defeat, his Zekrom will revert into the Dark Stone. You must take this stone to the top of Dragonspiral Tower (located north of Icirrus City). Once at the summit, the stone will react, and Zekrom will manifest for a Level 70 encounter.
Kyurem
Only after you have captured Zekrom (or Reshiram in White 2) will Kyurem appear in its lair. Head to the Giant Chasm, specifically the area where the final confrontation with Ghetsis took place. Kyurem will be waiting in its base form at Level 70.
- Crucial Item: After the battle, whether you catch or defeat Kyurem, search the ground to find the DNA Splicers. This key item allows you to fuse Kyurem with Zekrom to create Black Kyurem. This fusion retains the IVs and Nature of the Kyurem, so make sure you synchronize for the correct nature during the Kyurem battle, not the Zekrom one.
The Eon Duo: Latios and Latias
Version exclusivity continues with the Eon Duo. In Black 2, you receive Latios, while White 2 players receive Latias. Unlike the roaming mechanics seen in the Hoenn games, these are stationary encounters, but they require a bit of a chase.
Go to the Dreamyard after beating the Elite Four. As you enter, Latios will appear and immediately fly away. You must follow it through the complex, following its cries. Eventually, it will corner itself on the eastern side of the yard. This is a high-speed encounter at Level 68. Latios is famously powerful with its Soul Dew (if available) and its high Special Attack, so bringing a Steel type to resist its Psychic and Dragon moves is highly advisable.
The Lake Guardians: Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf
Originally from the Sinnoh region, the Lake Trio can be found in Unova after a specific trigger event.
- Trigger: Visit the Cave of Being on Route 20 (requires Waterfall). Inside, the three pixies will appear and then scatter across Unova.
- Uxie: Go to Nacrene City. Stand on the specific spot outside the Museum entrance (the shadows usually indicate where). Uxie will appear at Level 65.
- Mesprit: Go to the summit of the Celestial Tower on Route 7. Stand near the bell at the top. Mesprit will manifest at Level 65.
- Azelf: Go to Route 23. On the left side of the route, near a puzzle involving Strength boulders, you will find the spot where Azelf appears at Level 65.
All three possess the Levitate ability, making Ground moves useless, and they utilize Future Sight, which can deal massive damage two turns after it's cast, often knocking out your "catcher" Pokémon unexpectedly.
The Regi Trio and the Unova Link Key System
This is perhaps the most complicated legendary hunt in Black 2. The game utilizes the "Unova Link" to unlock specific chambers.
Regirock
First, head to the Clay Tunnel (accessible from Driftveil City) and find the Underground Ruins. You must solve a puzzle involving a hidden switch. In the center of the room, walk 6 steps down and 9 steps right. Examine the floor to flip the switch. This opens the Rock Peak Chamber where Regirock (Level 65) waits.
Registeel and Regice (The Version Lock)
Once you catch Regirock, you will unlock a "Key" in your Unova Link menu.
- In Black 2, you unlock the Iron Key, which changes the ruins into the Iron Chamber, allowing you to catch Registeel.
- In White 2, you unlock the Iceberg Key, which leads to Regice.
To get the other one, you must use the Unova Link to communicate with a friend who has the opposite key. If you are playing Black 2, you must receive the Iceberg Key from a White 2 player to encounter Regice on your cartridge. This is a physical local wireless requirement, making these two some of the rarest legendaries to obtain legitimately today.
Regigigas
If you manage to obtain all three—Regirock, Regice, and Registeel—and have them in your party, travel to the Twist Mountain basement. In the deepest room, the giant statue of Regigigas will come to life. It is Level 68 and possesses the Slow Start ability, giving you five turns to weaken it while its Attack and Speed are halved. This is the best window to use status moves and False Swipe.
Heatran and Cresselia: The Continental Guests
Heatran
To find Heatran, you must first find the Magma Stone. It is hidden in a dark corner of Route 18. Once you have the stone, take it to the deepest part of Reversing Mountain (the area where you explored with Bianca earlier in the game). Heatran will appear at Level 68 in the room where the stone’s power is strongest.
Cresselia
Cresselia requires the Lunar Wing. To get this, you must navigate the Strange House near Lentimas Town. The house is a ghost-filled puzzle where furniture moves to block or open paths. Once you reach the end and obtain the Lunar Wing, take it to the Marvelous Bridge. As you walk across, Cresselia will descend from the sky for a Level 68 battle.
The Forces of Nature: Dream Radar and Transfers
Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus are not natively catchable in the overworld of Black 2. Instead, they were designed to be caught via the Pokémon Dream Radar app on the Nintendo 3DS and then transferred to the game. These versions come in their "Therian Formes." If you want their traditional "Incarnate Formes," you must take them to the Abundant Shrine with the Reveal Glass item.
Professional Capture Tactics for Legendaries
When hunting black 2 legendaries, showing up with just a high-level team and Ultra Balls is a recipe for frustration. The capture rate for most of these encounters is 3, the lowest in the game.
The "Catcher" Pokémon Build
Every serious hunter needs a dedicated capture specialist. The best options are:
- Gallade: Can learn False Swipe and Hypnosis. Using Wide Lens as a held item improves Hypnosis’s accuracy.
- Smeargle: Can learn any move via Sketch. The optimal build is False Swipe, Spore (100% accuracy sleep), Soak (to turn Ghost types into Water types so False Swipe hits), and Gastro Acid (to negate annoying abilities).
- Parasect: Access to Spore and False Swipe, though it struggles with lower speed and many weaknesses.
Understanding Status Math
Status conditions are multipliers in the catch formula.
- Sleep and Freeze: 2.5x multiplier.
- Paralysis, Burn, and Poison: 1.5x multiplier.
Never use Burn or Poison, as the chip damage will eventually faint the legendary. Sleep is mathematically superior but temporary. Paralysis is permanent but provides a lower boost. For legendaries with healing moves like Virizion, Sleep is mandatory to stop the recovery cycle.
The Ball Selection Strategy
Don't rely solely on Ultra Balls. They only have a 2x multiplier. Instead, use these:
- Quick Ball (4x): Throw this on the very first turn. You’d be surprised how often a legendary stays in the ball immediately.
- Dusk Ball (3.5x): This is the king of Black 2 hunting. Since many legendaries are in caves (Clay Tunnel, Giant Chasm, Reversing Mountain) or if you hunt at night (between 20:00 and 04:00), the Dusk Ball is significantly better than the Ultra Ball.
- Timer Ball (Up to 4x): After 10 turns, the Timer Ball becomes more effective than the Dusk Ball. After 30 turns, it is the most effective ball in the game. For long struggles, this is your finisher.
The Synchronize Trick
To ensure your legendary has a competitive Nature (like Jolly for Terrakion or Timid for Latios), put a Pokémon with the Synchronize ability at the front of your party. There is a 50% chance the wild legendary will inherit the same Nature as your Synchronize Pokémon. Even if the Synchronizer is fainted, the effect still works, allowing you to lead with your catcher while still influencing the legendary's stats.
Preparation Checklist
Before flying out to a legendary location, ensure your bag contains:
- 100+ Timer Balls
- 50+ Dusk Balls
- Max Repels (to avoid trash mobs on the way to the boss)
- PP Up or Ethers (False Swipe has limited PP, and you may need many uses)
- A Pokémon with Flash, Strength, and Surf (Unova’s caves are treacherous)
Capturing all the black 2 legendaries is a test of patience and resource management. By utilizing the Unova Link and the proper status-inflicting Pokémon, you can secure these powerhouses for your Hall of Fame team or for high-level competitive battling. The sheer variety of regions—from the frozen depths of the Giant Chasm to the ghostly halls of the Strange House—makes this one of the most rewarding legendary hunts in the history of the series.
