Finding Every Lamenter’s Gaol Key and Surviving the Maze
Lamenter’s Gaol stands as one of the most mechanically distinct and claustrophobic minor dungeons within the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Located in the Southern Shore region, specifically tucked away in the northwest corner of Charo’s Hidden Grave, this dungeon is notorious for its looping corridors, multi-level verticality, and a unique boss gimmick. Navigating it requires finding two specific keys: the Gaol Upper Level Key and the Gaol Lower Level Key. Without these, progressing to the boss or uncovering the dungeon's best loot is impossible.
Reaching the Lamenter’s Gaol Entrance
Accessing this dungeon requires reaching the elevated plateau of Charo’s Hidden Grave. The most reliable path begins at the Dragon’s Pit. After defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man, exit to the Dragon’s Pit Terminus. From there, travel east toward the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, then head south into the fields of red flowers. Following the path northwest through the shallow water filled with Grave Birds leads to a cave entrance marked by iron cages and stone structures. This is the Lamenter’s Gaol.
Securing the Gaol Upper Level Key
Upon entering the dungeon and resting at the Site of Grace, proceed down the initial tunnel. You will quickly encounter a locked iron gate directly ahead. This gate requires the Gaol Upper Level Key.
To find it, look for a small opening on the left side of the wall just before reaching the locked gate. Follow this narrow passage. You will pass a few jail cells; ignore the first one as it contains a minor ambush. In the second room on the right, two putrid corpses guard a chest. Inside this chest lies the Gaol Upper Level Key. Once acquired, return to the main path and unlock the gate.
Directly behind this gate is a ladder leading down into the heart of the facility. At the bottom, the environment shifts significantly, introducing ice-covered floors and the dungeon's most dangerous common enemies: the screaming Jar Innards.
Navigating the Ice Room Central Hub
The area at the bottom of the ladder serves as a central hub, often referred to as the Ice Room. Several paths branch off from here, and the Jar Innards roaming this space possess a lethal sonic attack. Their screams deal massive damage and can stagger players easily. It is advisable to eliminate them with ranged attacks or quick melee bursts before they finish their wind-up animation.
From the entrance of the Ice Room:
- To the West: A door leads to a ladder going further down. This path eventually leads to the Clarifying Horn Charm +2, located in a rat-infested tunnel system. While not required for the keys, it is a vital talisman for resisting madness and sleep.
- To the East: This path leads toward the next section of the dungeon and eventually the Lower Level Key.
- To the North: A locked door here leads to the boss, but it requires the Gaol Lower Level Key found later in the circuit.
The Path to the Gaol Lower Level Key
To obtain the second key, head east from the Ice Room. You will encounter a room where the floor appears solid but is actually a trap. Walking into the center of the room causes the floor to collapse, dropping you into a lower pit filled with Putrid Corpses.
After clearing the enemies in the pit, exit through the only available doorway and follow the corridor to a set of stairs. Ascend two flights of stairs. At the top of the second flight, you will find a landing with two options: a doorway to the right and a continue-up path.
Take the doorway to the right. This leads to a rocky ledge overlooking a large, cavernous room filled with Living Jars. You must jump across a small gap to reach the downward slope. At the bottom of this slope is a structured pile of remains and several "friendly" Living Jars. In the southwestern corner of this large hall, there is a chest guarded by a particularly large Jar Innard. Opening this chest rewards you with the Gaol Lower Level Key.
While in this room, ensure you check the central pile of jars to find a Hefty Cracked Pot, a rare crafting material essential for high-tier consumables.
Unlocking the Secret: The Illusory Wall and Lamenting Visage
The Gaol Lower Level Key is not just for reaching the boss; it also unlocks the dungeon’s best-hidden secret. After acquiring the key, return to the stairs area where you previously ascended. Instead of going back to the jump-off point, look for a small side room on one of the landings containing the "Call of Tibia" item.
In the hallway just outside this room, there is a dead-end wall that looks suspicious. Attacking or rolling into this wall reveals an illusory path. Behind this wall is a locked gate that can only be opened with the Gaol Lower Level Key. Inside, you will find a Shadow Realm Rune [4] and the Lamenting Visage, a unique torch-like shield that scales with Intelligence and Arcane, providing a niche but powerful tool for specific builds.
Reaching the Boss: The Lamenter
With the Gaol Lower Level Key in hand, navigate back to the Ice Room (the central hub). Head to the northern side of the room. There is a gate here that was previously inaccessible. Unlock it with the key to reveal a final ladder descending to the boss fog gate.
Boss Strategy: The Lamenter
The Lamenter is a humanoid boss whose difficulty lies not in raw strength, but in a lethal "Lament" mechanic.
- The Clone Gimmick: Throughout the fight, the Lamenter will vanish and summon multiple clones. These clones have very little health and can be dispatched with a single hit.
- The Death Timer: Every time the Lamenter summons clones, a small floating skull appears around your head for each clone currently active. If you fail to kill the clones quickly, and the total number of skulls reaches a full circle (approximately seven), your character will immediately die regardless of health.
- Detection: The real Lamenter often behaves slightly differently than the clones, sometimes staying further back or using more complex movements. However, since clones die so quickly, using wide-reaching area-of-effect attacks (like Hoarfrost Stomp or various Incantations) is the most effective way to clear the room and reset the death counter.
Defeating the Lamenter rewards you with 160,000 Runes and the Lamenter’s Mask. This unique item allows you to transform into a Lamenter-like form when used without any armor equipped, providing a permanent transformation until death.
Summary of Key Loot in Lamenter's Gaol
To ensure you haven't missed anything while searching for the keys, here is a checklist of the primary rewards found within the Gaol:
- Gaol Upper Level Key: Essential for dungeon progression.
- Gaol Lower Level Key: Opens the boss door and the secret treasure room.
- Chilling Perfume Bottle: Found in a side room near the first ladder descent in the Ice Room. It is a Dexterity/Intelligence weapon that applies frostbite.
- Clarifying Horn Charm +2: Located in the lower rat tunnels accessed from the west side of the Ice Room.
- Prattling Pate "Lamentation": Found at a dead-end bridge near the start of the dungeon, before using the first key.
- Lamenting Visage: Found behind the illusory wall in the secret room requiring the Lower Level Key.
- Lamenter’s Mask: Dropped by the boss upon completion of the dungeon.
Lamenter’s Gaol is a test of spatial awareness and patience. By securing the Upper Level Key early and navigating the collapsing floors to reach the Lower Level Key, you can fully clear this eerie location and claim its unique rewards.
