Mohgwyn Palace remains one of the most significant locations in the Lands Between, serving as a high-level challenge, a premier destination for character leveling, and the essential gateway to the Shadow Realm. Nestled in a secret pocket of the Siofra River underground, this blood-soaked domain is the seat of the Mohgwyn Dynasty. While players can spot its orange glow from the distant cliffs of Siofra, reaching it requires specific progression steps that are often overlooked by those rushing through the main story.

The two primary paths to the palace

Accessing Mohgwyn Palace can be achieved through two distinct methods, depending on how early a player wants to encounter the blood-themed challenges within.

The early route: White Mask Varré’s questline

The most common method for early access involves following the quest of White Mask Varré. After meeting him at the very start of the game at the First Step, he eventually moves to the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes. Following the defeat of Godrick the Grafted and a visit to the Roundtable Hold, Varré will offer Festering Bloody Fingers for invasions.

Advancing this quest requires either three multiplayer invasions or a single NPC invasion against Magnus the Beast Claw at the Writheblood Ruins in Altus Plateau. Once completed, Varré requests the blood of a maiden. Most players head to the Church of Inhibition to find a deceased maiden or return to the Chapel of Anticipation via the Four Belfries. After soaking the Lord of Blood's Favor in maiden blood, Varré rewards the player with the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. Using this item from the inventory instantly teleports the player to the Dynasty Mausoleum. This is by far the fastest way to reach the area, potentially accessible long before reaching the Mountaintops of the Giants.

The late route: The Consecrated Snowfield portal

For those who prefer a traditional exploration-based approach or have progressed beyond Varré’s quest, a hidden gateway teleporter exists in the Consecrated Snowfield. This is an endgame area accessible only by finding both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and using the Grand Lift of Rold.

The portal is located on the western edge of the snowfield, northwest of the Yelough Anix Ruins. The area is shrouded in thick fog and guarded by a Sanguine Noble NPC invader. Defeating this noble is a prerequisite for the portal to become active. Once used, the portal drops the player into a dark cave system that leads directly to the Palace Approach Ledge-Road site of grace. This route is typically reserved for players who are already at a high level (100+) and ready for the harsh environment of the palace.

The legendary Mohgwyn Palace rune farm

No discussion of Mohgwyn Palace is complete without mentioning its status as the most efficient rune farming location in Elden Ring. The Palace Approach Ledge-Road site of grace is the epicenter of this activity.

The bird method

From the site of grace, looking across the chasm to the west reveals a giant, mutated crow. By shooting this bird with a single arrow or a long-range spell, players can bait it into charging. Because of the terrain, the crow will almost always run off the cliff and fall to its death, granting a substantial amount of runes—roughly 11,000 to 13,000 depending on whether the Gold Scarab talisman or Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot is active. This process takes mere seconds and can be repeated indefinitely by resting at the grace.

The Albinauric genocide

For players who have completed the game or possess high-tier area-of-effect (AoE) weapons, the hillside covered in Second-Generation Albinaurics offers even higher returns. The most effective tool here is the Sacred Relic Sword, obtained from the final boss's remembrance. Its unique skill, Wave of Gold, can clear the entire hillside in one or two casts. This method can yield upwards of 40,000 to 50,000 runes in a single ten-second cycle. Even without the Sacred Relic Sword, weapons like Radahn's Starscourge Greatswords or powerful sorceries like Adula’s Moonblade can effectively clear these enemies, though at a slightly slower pace.

Navigating the Blood Lake and the Mausoleum

The geography of Mohgwyn Palace is divided into two main sections: the sprawling blood lake and the uphill climb through the Dynasty Mausoleum.

The dangers of the red swamp

The blood lake is a hazardous environment where movement is slowed in certain patches and the "Hemorrhage" status builds up quickly. Giant crows and spectral skeletons summoned by Albinaurics make exploration difficult. Three Nameless White Mask NPCs will invade players who wander too deep into the lake; defeating them is necessary to obtain the War Surgeon armor set, which includes the White Mask—a vital piece for any blood-loss build.

Valuable items hidden in the lake include the Swarm of Flies incantation, found in a shallow cave along the eastern wall. This spell remains a top-tier choice for triggering rapid bleed damage on bosses. Additionally, players can find a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone near the end of the mausoleum path, which is essential for maxing out special weapons.

Scaling the Dynasty Mausoleum

The transition from the lake to the mausoleum involves a dark, tunnel-like ascent. This area is populated by Putrid Corpses that explode upon death and Sanguine Nobles that ambush from the shadows. A torch or the Beast-Repellent Torch is highly recommended here, not just for light but to keep some of the aggressive wildlife at bay.

Midway through the mausoleum, players will encounter an Imprisoned Merchant who sells high-level crafting materials like Blood Roses and Rune Arcs. Beyond this point lies the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint, the final staging area before the encounter with the Lord of Blood.

Combat strategy for Mohg, Lord of Blood

Mohg is a formidable Demigod whose battle revolves around blood flame and a unique "nihil" curse mechanic. Preparation is the difference between a frustrating loss and a manageable victory.

Essential preparation items

Before entering the arena, players should ideally have the Purifying Crystal Tear mixed into their Flask of Wondrous Physick. This tear is obtained by defeating Eleonora, Violet Bloody Finger, at the Second Church of Marika in Altus Plateau. Without this tear, Mohg’s transition to his second phase—where he chants "Nihil!" three times—will drain the player's health significantly and heal the boss. Using the flask during the transition creates a protective barrier that negates the damage.

Another helpful tool is Mohg’s Shackle, found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds beneath Leyndell. Much like Margit’s Shackle, this item can be used twice in the first phase to pin Mohg to the ground temporarily, allowing for free damage or setup.

Phase one and two mechanics

In the first phase, Mohg uses wide sweeps with his trident and flings blood flame that lingers on the floor. Staying close and circling to his right (your left) is often safer than backing away, as his reach is deceptive. Once his health reaches 50%, he begins his ritual.

Phase two is considerably more chaotic. Mohg grows wings, increases his aggression, and his attacks now spread blood flame across a wider area. Every strike builds up the bleed meter. High robustness and fire resistance are recommended. If using a melee build, status effects like Frostbite or even his own specialty, Bleed, are surprisingly effective against him. For casters, Comet Azur or Meteorite of Astel can melt his health bar during his long ritual animation if timed correctly.

The gate to the Shadow of the Erdtree

In the current landscape of the game, Mohgwyn Palace serves a purpose beyond just loot and runes. At the back of Mohg’s arena, the Cocoon of the Empyrean rests, housing the withered arm of Miquella. Interaction with this cocoon is the only way to enter the Shadow Realm.

This makes Mohg a mandatory boss for anyone looking to experience the expansion content. Given his high HP pool and devastating damage, he acts as a skill check to ensure players are sufficiently leveled for the challenges of the Shadow Realm. It is generally advised to be at least level 120 with a +25 (or +10 somber) weapon before making the jump into the expansion content from this point.

Notable loot checklist

To ensure a thorough sweep of Mohgwyn Palace, players should verify they have collected the following high-value items:

  1. Map Fragment: Mohgwyn Palace – Located on a corpse at the base of the stairs leading to the mausoleum.
  2. Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone – Found in a chest on the altar just before the lift to Mohg’s arena.
  3. Lord's Rune – Tucked away in the dark tunnels of the mausoleum.
  4. Haligdrake Talisman +2 – Found in the graveyard section of the blood lake, providing massive holy damage negation.
  5. Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [24] – Found near the edge of the lake, south of the palace approach.

Environmental hazards and enemy behavior

The enemies in this region do not behave like their counterparts elsewhere. The Albinaurics here are often passive until provoked, but once aggressive, they can use a cartwheel attack that deals surprisingly high poise damage. The giant crows are much more aggressive than those found in Caelid and possess a "fake stagger" animation designed to lure players into a devastating counter-attack.

Furthermore, the Sanguine Nobles that appear throughout the mausoleum have the ability to parry player attacks and use Reduvia-style projectile bleeds. Patience is required; rushing through these narrow corridors often leads to being surrounded by exploding putrid corpses while a noble bleeds you from the darkness.

Optimization for different builds

Different playstyles will find Mohgwyn Palace varied in difficulty.

  • Strength builds should focus on high-impact jumping attacks to stagger the many humanoid enemies. A Greatshield can be helpful against the crows, but it won't stop the bleed buildup from Mohg’s attacks.
  • Dexterity/Bleed builds will find themselves at home here, though Mohg himself has high resistance to blood loss (though he is not immune). The White Mask and Lord of Blood’s Exultation talisman are essential for maximizing damage in this zone.
  • Intelligence/Faith builds should utilize long-range options to clear the lake from afar. Night Comet is particularly effective against the Sanguine Nobles as they cannot dodge what they cannot see. Holy damage, while often weak against endgame bosses, is effective against the many undead-type enemies found in the peripheral areas of the mausoleum.

Mohgwyn Palace is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling and mechanical challenge. Whether you are there to boost your level for a difficult boss or to step into the expansion, it remains a central pillar of the endgame experience.
