The Abyssal Woods remains one of the most elusive and atmospheric regions within the Realm of Shadow. Tucked away in the southeastern corner of the map, this fog-drenched basin is not accessible through normal exploration or overland travel. Instead, reaching it requires a multi-step journey that begins deep within the heart of the Shadow Keep legacy dungeon and concludes with a descent through a lightless catacomb. Navigating this path is often a source of confusion due to the heavy reliance on illusory walls and vertical platforming.

The starting point: Shadow Keep's hidden ladder

To begin the journey to the Abyssal Woods, you must first secure access to the Shadow Keep, the massive fortress dominating the Scadu Altus skyline. The specific path starts after defeating the Golden Hippopotamus boss at the Main Gate Plaza. Once the plaza site of grace is active, look for the exit that leads toward the center of the keep.

From the Main Gate Plaza, head through the doorway to the west and ascend the stairs. You will encounter several Vulgar Militiamen hiding among the scenery. Continue upward until you reach the ramparts characterized by long rows of burning boats. This area is heavily guarded by soldiers and more militiamen. Instead of proceeding forward toward the Specimen Storehouse, look for a ladder located on the northern side of the rampart, situated between the burning boats.

Descending this ladder takes you to a small, flooded ledge on the edge of the castle walls. Follow the path along the water and look for a second ladder hidden behind a waterfall. This descent leads into a secluded storage room containing a single painting titled "The Domain of Dragons." To progress further, you must strike the illusory wall located immediately to the right of this painting. This reveals a tunnel leading to a stone coffin. Interacting with the coffin triggers a cutscene where you are transported down the cliffs to the Castle Watering Hole.

Navigating the Recluses' River

Upon emerging from the coffin, you will find yourself at the Castle Watering Hole site of grace, located in a lower, flooded section of Scadu Altus that was previously unreachable. This area is populated by several dormant Furnace Golems; one of them will reactivate if you approach it, so maintaining a safe distance is generally advisable for those wishing to reach the woods quickly.

Mount Torrent and ride south from the watering hole. You will soon reach the Ruins of Unte. Continue following the riverbed as it transitions into the Recluses' River. The terrain here becomes significantly more vertical. You will encounter the Recluses' River Upstream site of grace. From here, the path continues south along the narrow cliffside ledges. Be cautious of the man-flies that congregate in these areas, as they can easily knock you off the thin paths if you are caught off guard.

Eventually, you will reach the Recluses' River Downstream site of grace. This is a critical junction. To reach the valley floor, you must utilize the giant tombstones protruding from the cliff face as makeshift platforms. Careful jumping is required here; while Torrent can make the jumps easier, some players find doing it on foot provides better control over the landing momentum. Descent to the very bottom until you reach the riverbank below the waterfalls.

The Darklight Catacombs challenge

Once you are at the lowest level of the canyon, travel southeast through the misty woods. You will find the entrance to the Darklight Catacombs. This dungeon serves as the final barrier before entering the Abyssal Woods. As the name suggests, the interior is pitch black. It is highly recommended to have a lantern active or a torch equipped to navigate the many pits and ambushes.

The Darklight Catacombs is a multi-floor dungeon centered around large, dark halls. To illuminate the area, you must find and pull levers scattered throughout the floors, which will lower chandeliers or light massive braziers. Watch out for the Big Mouth Imps, which can fire powerful cannonballs from across the dark rooms.

The dungeon concludes with an elevator ride down to a fog gate. Beyond this gate lies Jori, Elder Inquisitor. This boss utilizes a combination of holy projectiles, golden arcs, and summons. Jori will frequently summon smaller inquisitors to distract you while he fires spinning golden tornadoes. It is often effective to focus aggression on Jori to interrupt his casting animations, though managing the positioning of his summons is vital to avoid being overwhelmed by chip damage.

Entering the Abyssal Woods and the madness mechanic

Defeating Jori, Elder Inquisitor, allows you to open the large doors at the back of the arena, which lead directly out into the Forsaken Graveyard of the Abyssal Woods. Upon stepping into this region, several unique mechanics immediately change the gameplay experience.

The most notable change is the behavior of Torrent. The spectral steed is terrified of the atmosphere in the woods and will refuse to be summoned. This forces you to explore the entire region on foot. Additionally, the Abyssal Woods is a zone of "Frenzied Flame" influence. Many creatures, including the local wildlife and the common rats, can build up the Madness status effect rapidly. Carrying Clarifying Boluses or wearing gear with high Focus resistance is a practical way to manage the frequent buildup.

To find your bearings, head south and then southeast from the entrance to locate the Abandoned Church. Inside the ruins, you will find the Map Fragment: Abyss. Having the map revealed is essential, as the dense fog and repetitive foliage make it incredibly easy to lose your sense of direction.

Survival against the Aging Untouchables

The Abyssal Woods is home to a specific type of enemy known as the Aging Untouchables (sometimes referred to as winter lanterns due to their glowing heads). These creatures patrol specific patches of tall grass and are generally invulnerable to standard weapons. If they spot you, they will teleport and attempt a grab attack that inflicts massive madness and health damage, often resulting in immediate death.

Stealth is the intended method for bypassing these foes. Use the patches of tall grass to hide and wait for them to turn their backs. You can use items like glass shards or arrows to create noise distractions, lure them away from narrow paths, and slip past. It is possible to kill them by parrying their grab attack, which makes them vulnerable to damage, but the timing is tight and carries a high risk of failure.

Reaching Midra's Manse

Your ultimate goal in the Abyssal Woods is typically Midra’s Manse, located in the far southwest corner of the region. The path involves navigating through several stealth sections populated by the Aging Untouchables. Once you pass the Divided Falls and the woodland trails, the architecture of the manse will become visible through the fog.

The manse acts as a minor legacy dungeon within the woods. Inside, you will find more lore regarding the Frenzied Flame and eventually face Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame. This area serves as the narrative and mechanical climax of the Abyssal Woods, offering some of the most challenging combat encounters in the DLC. Ensuring you have collected Scadutree Fragments from the earlier sections of the woods will significantly improve your survivability within the manse's halls.
