Finding Thrumbo BG3: Exact Location and Best Quest Choices
Locating Thrumbo is a pivotal step in the "Find Mystic Carrion's Servant" quest, which takes place in the Lower City during Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3. This elusive zombie servant holds the key to defeating one of the most powerful necromancers in the game, but finding him requires more than just wandering the streets. This guide details exactly where Thrumbo is hiding, how to access his location, and the consequences of the choices presented once you find him.
Entering Philgrave’s Mansion
Before searching for Thrumbo, most players encounter Mystic Carrion in Philgrave’s Mansion, located in the southern part of the Lower City. The mansion is a stone building that appears sealed to the uninitiated. There are three primary ways to gain entry:
- Arcana Check: Interacting with the stone door allows for a high-DC Arcana check. Success reveals the door is magically sealed, allowing you to bypass it.
- The Spell "Knock": This level 2 transmutation spell is the most efficient way to open the door if your party lacks a high-Intelligence character.
- Physical Force: If magic fails, characters with high Strength, like Karlach, can simply smash through the stone wall to gain entry.
- The Secret Hole: On the south side of the mansion, behind some crates, there is a small hole. Using a character with "Gaseous Form" or a small Wild Shape like a cat or rat allows for a stealthy entrance.
Once inside, Mystic Carrion will task you with finding his runaway servant, Thrumbo. He promises a reward for Thrumbo’s return, but as with most things in Baldur’s Gate 3, there is a darker layer to this request.
Where is Thrumbo Located?
Thrumbo is not far from Philgrave’s Mansion, but he is expertly hidden. He has taken refuge in a small beach house known as Vonayn’s Home.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Start at Heapside Strand: Fast travel to the Heapside Strand waypoint in the Lower City.
- Head South toward the Docks: Move toward the wooden piers and the shoreline.
- The Sahuagin Ambush: If this is your first time visiting this specific pier area, be prepared for a combat encounter. Five Sahuagin will emerge from the water to attack. They have decent mobility and can pin down spellcasters, so manage your positioning carefully.
- Locate Vonayn’s Home: Directly to the east of the pier is a small, unassuming house. The coordinates are approximately X: 55, Y: -100.
- Search the Wardrobe: Inside the house, you will see bloodstains on the floor leading toward a wardrobe on the right side of the room. Interact with the wardrobe as if you were going to loot it. Thrumbo will jump out, startled by your presence.
Finding Clues in the Mansion First
While you can go straight to the beach house, the game provides a narrative path to find him. On the top floor of Philgrave’s Mansion, there is a "Beggar’s Portrait" lying on the floor. Passing a Perception check reveals a hidden note behind the painting. This note explains that Thrumbo intended to meet his friends at the beach to secure a boat and escape the city. This lore adds context to why he chose Vonayn’s Home as his hideout.
The Crucial Choice: Kill or Help Thrumbo?
Once you confront Thrumbo, he will plead for his life and explain that Mystic Carrion is a sadistic Mummy Lord who murdered him and his friends to turn them into undead slaves. You are faced with two main paths.
Path 1: Siding with Mystic Carrion
If you choose to fulfill the contract, you must kill Thrumbo.
- The Process: Thrumbo is a zombie with 56 HP and is not a significant threat to a level 10-12 party. Once dead, you can loot his body to find the Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Heart.
- The Reward: Return the heart to Mystic Carrion. He will reward you with the Torch of Revocation. This is a Very Rare club that deals bludgeoning, fire, and necrotic damage. It is also required for the "Free the Artist" quest involving Oskar Fevras.
- Note: You can technically get the Torch of Revocation even if you kill Mystic Carrion by looting it from a chest in his room, making this the less optimal path for most players.
Path 2: Helping Thrumbo (Recommended)
Helping Thrumbo involves a multi-step quest to permanently destroy Mystic Carrion. This path offers significantly better loot and a more morally satisfying conclusion.
- The Process: Thrumbo reveals that he cannot truly be free as long as Mystic Carrion exists. To kill a Mummy Lord, you must find and destroy his internal organs, which are hidden across the city.
- The Secret of the Heart: Thrumbo himself is unknowingly carrying Mystic Carrion’s heart inside his own body. If you choose to help him, you must first find evidence of this in the sewers.
Finding Mystic Carrion’s Organs
To make the fight against Mystic Carrion manageable, you should destroy his lungs, brain, and liver before confronting him.
1. Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Lungs
Located in the Baldur’s Gate Graveyard Mortuary. The graveyard is northwest of the Basilisk Gate. Look for a trapdoor at X: 31, Y: 21. Inside the mortuary, the lungs are sitting on a table in the main room. Destroy them with any attack.
2. Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Liver and Brain
These are hidden in the Ancient Lair within the City Sewers.
- Enter the sewers and navigate toward the Undercity Ruins waypoint.
- Head west into a passageway that leads to a treasure trove.
- Warning: Opening chests here triggers an ambush by several undead. They inflict "Spell Rot," a condition that causes you to take necrotic damage every time you cast a spell. High-level melee fighters are the best choice for this encounter.
- The Liver is in a chest, and the Brain is on a table in a side room that opens after the fight.
- Crucially, you will find a note here confirming that the Heart is hidden inside Thrumbo.
3. Destroying the Heart
Return to Thrumbo and tell him what you found. He will literally cough up the Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Heart. When you destroy this jar, it will explode, so keep your distance.
The Final Battle: Killing Mystic Carrion
With all organs destroyed, return to Philgrave’s Mansion. Mystic Carrion will be significantly weakened. He will still use powerful Necromancy spells, so having "Counterspell" ready is highly advisable.
Upon his death, Thrumbo and his fellow zombies will arrive to celebrate their freedom. Thrumbo will grant you the Crypt Lord Ring, which allows you to cast the Level 6 spell "Create Undead" once per Long Rest. This is an exceptional item for any necromancy-themed build.
Loot Summary and Analysis
Choosing to help Thrumbo and kill Mystic Carrion yields the following high-tier rewards:
| Item | Rarity | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Crypt Lord Ring | Rare | Grants Create Undead (Level 6 Spell). |
| Staff of Cherished Necromancy | Very Rare | Enemies have Disadvantage on saves against your Necromancy spells. Killing a creature grants Life Essence to cast spells for free. |
| Armour of the Spore Keeper | Very Rare | +1 to Spell Save DC; allows Spore Druids to spread Haste, Timmask, or Bibberbang spores. |
| Veil of the Morning | Very Rare | Undead have Disadvantage on attack rolls against you. |
Strategic Tips for the Quest
- Weight Management: If you decide to kill Thrumbo and want to bring his entire body back to Carrion (for roleplay or specific dialogue), be aware he weighs 75kg. Ensure a high-Strength character like Lae'zel or Karlach has space in their inventory.
- The "Free the Artist" Connection: If you are doing this quest solely to help Oskar Fevras, remember that you do not need to side with the necromancer. Killing Carrion and looting his body/room is a perfectly valid way to obtain the Torch of Revocation needed to burn the haunted painting.
- Dealing with Spell Rot: In the Ancient Lair, if your casters are afflicted with Spell Rot, use "Remove Curse" or simply rely on Cantrips and melee attacks to finish the fight without draining your own HP.
Finding Thrumbo is a small task that opens up one of the most rewarding side-quests in Act 3. Whether you are looking for the ultimate necromancer staff or simply trying to do the right thing for a group of unfortunate zombies, knowing exactly where to find that wardrobe in Vonayn's Home is the first step toward finishing the job.
