Gf Guide Ff8: Finding Every Summon and Mastering Junctions
Guardian Forces (GFs) are the heartbeat of Final Fantasy VIII. Unlike other entries in the franchise where summons are flashy cinematic attacks used sparingly, GFs in FF8 are the foundation of your characters' power. Without them, you cannot use magic, you cannot boost your stats, and you certainly cannot survive the later stages of the game. This guide covers how to secure every GF and which abilities you need to prioritize to turn Squall and his team into unstoppable forces.
The Starter Trio and Early Game Strategy
Your journey starts with Quetzalcoatl and Shiva. These are obtained by simply checking the computer desk in Squall’s classroom at the start of the game. While they seem basic, Quetzalcoatl holds arguably the most important ability in the entire game: Card.
Learning Card as early as possible allows you to turn enemies into cards, which grants Ability Points (AP) without giving you Experience Points (EXP). Since enemies in FF8 scale with your level, staying at a low level while farming AP is a professional strategy to stay ahead of the curve. Following the starters, Ifrit is acquired after defeating him in the Fire Cavern. He provides the first Strength Junction (Str-J), which is crucial for making Squall’s physical attacks hit like a truck.
Never Miss a Draw: The Boss-Specific GFs
One of the most common mistakes is forgetting to check the "Draw" menu during boss fights. Several GFs can only be obtained this way. If you miss them, they are gone until the very end of the game.
- Siren: You must draw her from Elvoret at the top of the Dollet Communication Tower. She is vital for status effect junctions and the Move-Find ability, which reveals hidden save and draw points.
- Carbuncle: Draw from the Iguions during the parade at the end of Disc 1. Carbuncle provides the Vit-J (Vitality) and allows for the Reflect status, which is a life-saver against magic-heavy bosses.
- Leviathan: Draw from Master Norg in the Balamb Garden basement. Leviathan offers the Supt Mag-RF (Support Magic Refine), essential for getting high-end restorative spells.
- Pandemona: Draw from Fujin during the battle in Balamb Hotel. Pandemona is your primary source for Speed Junctions (Spd-J), which determines how often your turns come up.
- Alexander: Draw from Edea during the final battle of Disc 2. Alexander specializes in Holy magic and high-level ability refinements.
- Eden: The ultimate GF. You draw Eden from Tiamat in Ultimecia’s Castle or from Ultima Weapon in the Deep Sea Research Center.
The Power of Side-Quest GFs
Some of the best GFs aren't found on the main path. They require specific items or the completion of mini-adventures.
Diablos: The Game Changer
After the mission briefing for Timber, Headmaster Cid gives you a Magical Lamp. Do not sell this. Using the lamp triggers a fight with Diablos. To win early, use the Blind spell on him and spam Squall’s Renzokuken. Diablos provides Enc-None, which allows you to turn off random encounters entirely, and Mug, which lets you steal rare items from enemies.
The Brothers: Sacred and Minotaur
Located in the Tomb of the Unknown King near Deling City. This is a straightforward dungeon crawl followed by a duo boss fight. They provide the HP-J ability with a significant boost, making your characters much tankier in the early game.
Cerberus
During the Battle of the Gardens (end of Disc 2), you can find Cerberus standing in the middle of the Galbadia Garden atrium. Defeat him to earn his soul. Cerberus is unique because he offers Auto-Haste and the Double/Triple command, allowing your casters to fire off multiple spells per turn.
Late Game Powerhouses: Bahamut and Cactuar
As you reach the final stages of the game and gain access to the Ragnarok airship, you can hunt for the heavy hitters.
Bahamut is found in the Deep Sea Research Center (the far southwest corner of the map). You must answer his questions correctly (choose "It's not our nature to fight" then "Never" to the invisible third option) before fighting him. Bahamut provides Abilityx4, allowing you to equip four character abilities instead of the standard two.
Cactuar is located on Cactuar Island. You’ll see a small green figure popping up from the sand. Engaging it leads to a fight with Jumbo Cactuar. This GF is essential for late-game stat maxing, as it provides bonuses to Strength, Vitality, and Magic every time a character levels up.
The Complex Summons: Doomtrain and Tonberry
Tonberry requires patience. Go to the Centra Ruins and defeat 20 small Tonberries. After the 20th one, the Tonberry King will appear. Defeat him to get the GF. Tonberry doesn't have great combat stats, but his "Call Shop" and "Haggle" abilities are mandatory for obtaining the best items in the game.
Doomtrain is a status-effect beast. To get him, you need the Solomon Ring (found at Tear's Point) and 6 of each of the following: Steel Pipes, Malboro Tentacles, and Remedy+. Once you have these, use the ring from your inventory. Doomtrain’s summon attack applies every negative status effect to enemies, which is the most efficient way to weaken high-level bosses.
Ability Priority: What to Learn First
When you get a new GF, the game defaults to learning "Summon Magic" or "GF HP." This is a trap. You should manually select the refinement and junction abilities first. Here is the recommended order for early GFs:
- Quetzalcoatl: Card -> Card Mod -> T Mag-RF (Thunder Magic Refine).
- Shiva: I Mag-RF (Ice Magic Refine) -> Str-J.
- Ifrit: F Mag-RF (Fire Magic Refine) -> Str+20% -> Str+40% -> Str Bonus.
- Siren: L Mag-RF (Life Magic Refine) -> Tool-RF -> Treatment.
- Diablos: Enc-Half -> Enc-None -> Mug.
By focusing on Card Mod and Magic Refinement, you can turn common monster cards into high-level spells like Tornado, Quake, or even Flare before you even leave Disc 1. Junctioning 100 Tornado spells to Squall’s Strength at level 10 will allow him to one-shot almost any boss in the first half of the game.
GF Compatibility and Items
Every time you summon a GF, the character's compatibility with that GF increases, but it decreases for GFs of the opposite element (e.g., summoning Ifrit lowers compatibility with Shiva). High compatibility reduces the "Wait Time" during summoning.
However, in high-level play, you rarely summon GFs for their attacks because physical hits with high Strength junctions are faster and more reliable. Instead, use items like Amnesia Greens to make GFs forget useless abilities (like SumMag+10%) to make room for superior abilities taught via items like Adamantine (Vit+60%) or Rosetta Stones (Abilityx4).
Missing GFs? The Disc 4 Safety Net
If you reach Ultimecia’s Castle on Disc 4 and realize you missed Siren, Carbuncle, or any other drawable GF, do not panic. The eight sub-bosses guarding the seals in the castle each hold one of the missed GFs. For example, you can draw Siren from Tri-Point, or Leviathan from Trauma. While it’s harder to fight these bosses without your full suite of abilities, it provides a final chance to complete your collection before the final confrontation.
Final Tips for Mastery
- Stay Low Level: As mentioned, enemies level up with you. If you are level 100 but have poor magic junctioned, the game will be incredibly difficult. Stay low, farm AP, and use high-level magic for junctions.
- The Magic of Cards: Playing the Triple Triad card game is not just a hobby; it is the fastest way to get items for GF refinement. The Quistis and Zell cards can be modded into items that provide top-tier spells very early.
- Junctioning Strategy: Always prioritize Strength and HP junctions for your physical attackers, and Magic for your primary healer/caster. Elemental and Status defense junctions are more important than elemental attacks in the late game to prevent game-over scenarios from spells like Death or Confuse.
Mastering the GFs in Final Fantasy VIII is the difference between a frustrating grind and a satisfying power trip. By securing these entities early and focusing on their refinement abilities, you can dictate the pace of every battle and fully enjoy the complex narrative of Squall’s journey.
