How to Beat the Gauntlet of Shar BG3 Without Losing Your Mind
The Gauntlet of Shar is arguably the most significant dungeon in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3. It serves as the culmination of Shadowheart’s personal arc, the gateway to the Shadowfell, and the key to stripping Ketheric Thorm of his immortality. This isn't just a place to swing swords; it is a test of puzzle-solving, stealth, and moral weight.
Before descending into the depths, ensure the party is at least level 8. While it’s possible at level 7, the combat encounters—especially the potential showdown with Balthazar or the Orthon—can be punishing for underleveled groups. Bringing Shadowheart is non-negotiable for narrative reasons, and having a high-dexterity character (like Astarion) for trap disarming will save a lot of camp supplies in healing.
Cracking the Thorm Mausoleum Entrance
The entrance is located in the northern part of the Reithwin Graveyard. Upon entering the Grand Mausoleum, Raphael will likely intercept the group to offer a deal regarding an old enemy. This sets the stage for the Yurgir encounter later.
To reach the Gauntlet itself, one must solve the painting puzzle in the final room of the Mausoleum. There are three paintings depicting Ketheric Thorm’s life. Pressing the buttons beneath them in the wrong order triggers massive amounts of grease and fire traps. The correct sequence follows Ketheric’s descent into madness:
- Moonrise Towers (Southwest)
- Grief (Southeast)
- General (North)
Once the secret door opens, step onto the traversal platform to descend. You are now officially in the Gauntlet of Shar.
The Initial Statue Puzzle
The first room features a massive statue of Shar surrounded by a glowing purple circle. Approaching it directly results in a forceful knockback. To progress, the room must be plunged into total darkness to reveal the glowing path on the floor.
There are four levers in the side alcoves. These levers lower the mystic thuribles (lanterns) hanging from the ceiling. Be wary of the floor vents; they leak darkness and necrotic fog if triggered. Once all eight lanterns are lowered and interacted with to extinguish their light, a purple glyph pattern appears on the floor. Navigate through the gaps in these glyphs—do not touch the glowing lines—to reach the Umbral Gem at the statue’s base. Touching this gem opens the massive stone door to the north.
Meeting Balthazar and the Rat Problem
Past the first corridor, a major battle between Sharran Justiciars and Balthazar’s undead forces breaks out. The Umbral Tremors on the floor act as portals, spawning more Justiciars every turn. Focus fire on the Tremors first.
After the skirmish, you can head west to find Balthazar. He is a formidable necromancer working for Ketheric. You have a choice: help him find the "relic" (the Nightsong) or kill him here. Killing him in his office is much easier than fighting him at the end of the dungeon because you can control the environment and prevent him from using his most powerful summons. If you decide to keep him alive for now, he provides a bell to summon his golem brother, Flesh, which can be useful in the upcoming trials.
While exploring, keep an eye out for the rats. They are more than they seem. Interacting with them can lead to a secret quest involving the last Dark Justiciar, which is crucial if you want to break Yurgir’s contract rather than killing him.
How to Get All Four Umbral Gems
To reach the inner sanctum, you need four Umbral Gems. Three are rewards from the Sharran Trials, and one is held by the Orthon, Yurgir.
1. The Soft-Step Trial
This is a stealth mission. The goal is to reach the end of a small maze without being detected by the patrolling shadows.
- Strategy: Send a single character with high Stealth or an Invisibility potion. Alternatively, use Misty Step or Dimension Door to bypass the maze walls entirely.
- The Reward: An Umbral Gem at the altar at the end of the hall.
2. The Self-Same Trial
The party must fight mirror versions of themselves. This is one of the most interesting encounters in BG3 because the clones use your own gear, spells, and passives against you.
- Strategy: The most efficient way to cheese this trial is to unequip all weapons and armor from the party before offering blood at the altar. Once the clones spawn, re-equip your gear. The clones will remain unarmored and unarmed.
- Crucial Rule: Each character should only attack their own clone. Attacking someone else’s clone applies the "Cheater’s Folly" curse, which reduces all Ability Scores. The curse persists until a Long Rest or a Remove Curse spell is used.
3. The Faith-Leap Trial
You must cross a dark abyss on an invisible path to reach the altar. Looking at the floor in front of the offering bowl reveals a map of the safe path.
- Strategy: Use a Fly spell or Enhanced Leap to jump directly between the three platforms. If you prefer to walk, use Light or Produce Flame to help see the faint outlines of the path. A trick many players use is to select the entire party and click the ground near the altar; the pathfinding AI sometimes navigates the invisible path automatically.
4. Dealing with Yurgir (The Fourth Gem)
Yurgir is located in the eastern wing of the Gauntlet. He is an Orthon—a powerful devil—ambushing you from a high vantage point with a legion of Merregons and a Displacer Beast named Nessa.
- The Diplomatic Path: If your character has high Persuasion and Insight, you can talk Yurgir into killing his minions, his pet, and eventually himself. This requires multiple DC 16 and DC 21 checks but bypasses a very difficult fight.
- The Combat Path: If forced into combat, do not stay in the lower area. The Merregons will rain down grenades. Use Misty Step to get onto the balcony immediately. Focus on Yurgir. When he throws his cluster of timed bombs, you can actually pick them up and throw them back at him or move them away from your party. Upon his death, he drops a rare hand crossbow and the final Umbral Gem.
The Silent Library and the Spear of Night
Located near the Faith-Leap trial, the Silent Library is a combat zone where a magical orb applies a "Silence" aura over the entire room, making spellcasting impossible.
- Kill the Librarian: Destroy the glowing orb in the center of the room to break the silence.
- Solve the Riddle: At the back of the library is a locked gate. Behind it is an altar with the riddle: "What can silence the Nightsong?"
- The Solution: Search the bookshelves (watch out for traps) for a book titled Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger. Place this book on the altar.
This opens a secret chamber containing the Dark Justiciar Half-Plate and, more importantly, the Spear of Night. Without this spear, Shadowheart cannot fulfill her destiny in the Shadowfell.
Entering the Shadowfell: The Point of No Return
Once all four gems are placed on the Pedestal of Reckoning, the elevator will take you to the Verge of the Shadows. There is a Waypoint here.
Warning: Entering the pool of water to reach the Shadowfell is a major transition point for the game. Completing this area will automatically fail many pending quests in Act 1 and Act 2, including the rescue of the tieflings and gnomes from Moonrise Towers. Make sure you have finished everything else before stepping in.
The Final Confrontation with Balthazar
Inside the Shadowfell, you find the Nightsong. If Balthazar is still alive, he will appear to claim her. This fight is notoriously difficult because Balthazar will summon dozens of skeletons on a small platform where being shoved into the abyss is a constant threat.
- Tactics: Use Counterspell on Balthazar’s Cloudkill. Use Spirit Guardians (Radiant) to melt the smaller skeletons. Thunderwave or Telekinesis can be used to shove Balthazar himself off the ledge, though you will lose his loot.
The Choice: Shadowheart and the Nightsong
This is the climax of the dungeon. Shadowheart stands over the Nightsong with the Spear of Night. You have three main paths:
- Let Shadowheart Kill the Nightsong: She becomes a Dark Justiciar, gaining powerful gear but losing a part of her soul. This leads to the death of almost everyone at Last Light Inn and locks you into a darker path for Act 3.
- Persuade Shadowheart to Spare the Nightsong: This is difficult unless you have a high approval rating with her. Sparing the Nightsong reveals her true identity (Dame Aylin), sets her free to assist you against Ketheric, and puts Shadowheart on a path toward redemption and Selûne.
- Kill Shadowheart: If you refuse to let her kill the Nightsong and fail the dialogue checks, she will turn hostile. This is generally the least desirable outcome for most players.
Loot and Rewards Summary
Beyond the story progression, the Gauntlet of Shar offers some of the best mid-game gear in BG3:
- Killer's Sweetheart Ring: Found in the Self-Same Trial. It guarantees a critical hit after killing an enemy.
- Hellfire Hand Crossbow: Dropped by Yurgir. Great for dual-wielding builds.
- Dark Justiciar Gear: A full set that provides significant advantages while obscured by shadows.
- The Spear of Night: Later upgrades into either a legendary Shar or Selûne spear depending on your choice.
Essential Tips for Success
- Radiant Damage: While it seems thematic, some Justiciars have "Radiant Retort," which reflects radiant damage back at the caster as necrotic damage. Check enemy examines carefully before casting Sunbeam or Guiding Bolt.
- Resting: You can leave the Gauntlet at any time before entering the Shadowfell to Long Rest. Don't push through the trials with zero spell slots.
- Exploration: Don't miss the "Vault" in the western wing (DC 30 lockpick). It contains high-tier loot and scrolls that can make the Balthazar fight trivial.
The Gauntlet of Shar is a masterpiece of level design that tests everything you've learned about Baldur’s Gate 3's mechanics. Whether you choose the path of darkness or light, the consequences of this dungeon will echo through the rest of your journey to the city of Baldur’s Gate.
