Sun damage in Cyrodiil is more than just a visual nuisance; it is a mechanical nightmare that fundamentally alters how you interact with the world of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Whether you contracted Porphyric Hemophilia by accident in a damp cave or sought the dark gift only to realize the social stigma is too much to bear, finding a cure is one of the most arduous journeys in the game.

The quest, simply titled "Vampire Cure," is notorious for its length, its fetch-quest requirements, and its potential to glitch. This breakdown provides the most efficient path to regaining your humanity, covering the traditional questline, DLC shortcuts, and technical fixes for when the game's code decides to work against you.

The Seventy-Two Hour Window: Preventing the Change

Before diving into the epic questline, it is worth noting that vampirism is not instantaneous. When you are first bitten by a vampire, you contract a disease called Porphyric Hemophilia. At this stage, you are not yet a vampire. You have exactly 72 in-game hours to treat this like any other common ailment.

A simple Potion of Cure Disease, a spell with the same effect, or a visit to any Chapel of the Nine for a blessing will wipe the infection clean. However, the moment you sleep after those three days have passed, the transformation is complete. Once you wake up with that first nightmare and the newfound "Hunter's Sight" ability, the standard potions will no longer work. You are now officially a creature of the night, and the only way out is through Melisande.

Starting the Quest: From Arcane University to Skingrad

To initiate the cure, your first stop should be the Arcane University in the Imperial City. Speak with Raminus Polus. If you have already become a vampire, a new dialogue option regarding a cure will appear. He will direct you to Count Janus Hassildor of Skingrad.

This is where the lore becomes interesting: the Count himself is a vampire. Upon meeting him (usually through his steward, Hal-Liurz), he reveals that while he has accepted his condition, his wife Rona has refused to feed and has fallen into a permanent coma. He wants a cure for her and, by extension, offers one to you. He points you toward a witch named Melisande who lives in a cabin at Drake Lowe, south of Cheydinhal along the Corbolo River.

Melisande’s First Toll: The Five Grand Soul Gems

Melisande is willing to brew the potion, but her price is steep and immediate. You must provide her with five empty Grand Soul Gems. This is often the point where players get stuck, as Grand Soul Gems are rare and expensive.

Efficient Locations for Grand Soul Gems

  1. The Mystic Emporium (Imperial City): Calindil often stocks them. If you have the Wizard's Tower DLC, the shop may be locked or restricted depending on your level, but it remains a primary source.
  2. Mages Guild Halls: Check the display cases in the Mages Guilds of Chorrol, Bruma, and Cheydinhal. If your Sneak and Security skills are high enough, these can be "borrowed" at no cost. The Chorrol Mages Guild, in particular, usually has several behind easy-to-pick locks.
  3. Dungeon Crawling: If you prefer combat, head to Crayfish Cave (south-southeast of Cheydinhal), Squandered Mine (south of Cheydinhal), or Nornal (southwest of Cheydinhal). These locations have a higher-than-average spawn rate for high-level soul gems in loot chests once you are above level 10.

Note that the gems must be empty. If you find a Grand Soul Gem that is already filled with a soul, it will not count toward Melisande's requirement.

The Shopping List of Horrors: Ingredients for the Potion

Once the soul gems are delivered, Melisande provides a second list. You will need to gather the following:

  • 6 Cloves of Garlic: Most grocery larders in houses or basements have these. Check the basement of the Skingrad Mages Guild or the various inns along the Gold Road.
  • 5 Nightshade Leaves: These grow wild in the West Weald region near Skingrad. You can also purchase them from Main Ingredient or The Gilded Carafe in the Imperial City Market District.
  • 2 Blood Grass Shoots: These are found exclusively in the Planes of Oblivion. If you have already closed all Oblivion Gates, don't worry—alchemists like Falanu Hlaalu in Skingrad often stock them.
  • The Blood of an Argonian: This requires a special dagger Melisande gives you. You don't need to kill the target; a single strike is enough.
  • The Ashes of Hindaril: You must track down and kill a powerful ancient vampire.

How to Get Argonian Blood Without a Bounty

The easiest way to get the blood is to visit the Peryite Shrine. The followers there are in a frozen trance and will not report you for a crime when you stab them. Alternatively, if you are a member of the Arena, your opponents often include Argonians. Veyond Cave, north of Bravil, is also filled with hostile Argonian bandits if you prefer a "legal" kill.

Finding Hindaril

Hindaril is located in Redwater Slough, a cavern system far to the south, near the Panther River. The cave is partially submerged, so bring a Water Breathing spell or potion if you aren't an Argonian yourself. Hindaril is a formidable mage-vampire; expect heavy use of Destruction and Illusion spells. Once he is defeated, loot his body for the unique "Ashes of Hindaril" rather than standard vampire dust.

The Final Ritual and Bug Avoidance

After delivering the final ingredients, Melisande will tell you to wait 24 hours. This is a critical moment. Save your game in a new slot before talking to her again.

When the time is up, she will give you two potions: one for yourself and one for Rona Hassildor. Do not drink your potion immediately. There is a long-standing bug where drinking the potion before the quest script for Rona completes can prevent the Count from rewarding you or properly closing the quest.

Travel back to Castle Skingrad and speak to Hal-Liurz. She will lead you to a secret chamber where the Count and Melisande are waiting. Watch the scene unfold. After Rona is cured (and passes away), the Count will ask for a day to grieve. Wait another 24 hours outside the castle, then return to speak with him to receive your gold reward. Now, you can safely consume your potion and watch your sun damage vulnerabilities vanish.

The Vile Lair: The DLC Shortcut

If the quest above sounds like too much work, and you have the "Vile Lair" official plug-in (included in most modern editions of Oblivion), there is a much faster way.

Deepscorn Hollow, the assassin’s sanctuary located at the southernmost tip of Cyrodiil, contains a feature called the Font of Renewal. To use it, you must first purchase the "Garden of Venomgrowth" upgrade from Rowley Eardwulf at the Wawnet Inn. Once upgraded, you can harvest Purgeblood Salts from the garden and use them at the Font of Renewal (the pool with the statue) to instantly cure your vampirism. This can be done an unlimited number of times and completely bypasses Melisande’s requirements.

Using Console Commands (PC Only)

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, the scripts in the "Vampire Cure" quest simply break. If you are playing on PC and find yourself stuck because an NPC won't talk or an item won't register, you can use the console to fix the situation.

Press the tilde (~) key and use the following commands sparingly:

  • To get the cure potion directly: player.additem 000977E4 1
  • To set the quest stage if it’s stuck: setstage MS40 100 (This marks the quest as finished, though it may not remove the physical effects of vampirism).
  • To manually remove the vampirism status:
    1. set pcVampire to -1
    2. player.removespell 0002C234 (This removes the 100% vampirism spell; IDs vary for lower stages, such as 0002C233 for 75%).

Weighing the Pros and Cons: Should You Cure It?

Before you commit to the cure, consider what you are giving up. Oblivion’s version of vampirism is unique because it rewards hunger. The longer you go without feeding, the stronger your attribute bonuses (Strength, Willpower, Speed) and skill boosts (Sneak, Athletics, Acrobatics) become.

At Stage 4 (100% Vampirism), you gain 20 points to several attributes and the "Embrace of Shadows" power, which grants 180 seconds of Invisibility. For a stealth-based character, this is arguably the most powerful state in the game.

However, the 8-points-per-second sun damage at this stage makes daytime travel impossible without constant healing. Fast travel becomes a death sentence if your arrival time is during the day. Furthermore, most NPCs will refuse to speak to you once you look like a full-blown vampire, effectively locking you out of many shops and quest-givers unless you feed to reset your appearance.

Summary of the Cure Process

To ensure a successful transition back to humanity, follow this sequence:

  1. Contract Porphyric Hemophilia and wait 3 days (or use the Dark Brotherhood questline via Vicente Valtieri).
  2. Speak to Raminus Polus after the change.
  3. Deliver 5 Empty Grand Soul Gems to Melisande at Drake Lowe.
  4. Gather Garlic, Nightshade, and Blood Grass.
  5. Retrieve Argonian Blood (Peryite Shrine) and Hindaril’s Ashes (Redwater Slough).
  6. Wait 24 hours for the potion brew.
  7. Complete the Skingrad Castle event before drinking your dose.

By following this path, you avoid the most common pitfalls of one of Cyrodiil’s most frustrating tasks. Whether you return to the light or decide to keep the night’s embrace, understanding the mechanics of the cure is essential for any long-term Oblivion playthrough.
