How to Get to Act 3 Silksong and Unlock the Abyss
Pharloom is a kingdom built on verticality and secrets, and many players find themselves staring at the credits after defeating the boss at the Citadel, assuming their journey with Hornet has concluded. However, reaching the true conclusion requires navigating a complex set of requirements that transition the game from Act 2 into the elusive Act 3, often referred to as the Abyss. Unlocking this final chapter is not merely about combat prowess; it is a test of your exploration and commitment to the denizens of this decaying world.
To reach Act 3, a specific late-game questline titled "Silk and Soul" must be initiated. This quest acts as the bridge between the standard ending and the extended campaign. The following details the rigorous path required to peel back the layers of Pharloom's endgame.
The fundamental prerequisites for Act 3
Before the "Silk and Soul" quest even appears on your radar, several large-scale world objectives must be completed. These are designed to ensure the player has experienced the breadth of Pharloom before entering the high-difficulty environment of the Abyss.
1. The Wish Board completion metric
Pharloom’s settlements—Bone Bottom, Bellhart, and Song Clave—each feature a Wish Board (or Bounty Board). Unlike early-game quests, the game tracks your "Quest Points" behind the scenes. To trigger the endgame transition, you generally need to complete all primary wishes in these three locations.
Reports from the community suggest a threshold of at least 17 to 20 quest points. Regular hunt or gather missions usually count for a full point, while courier or delivery quests (like the one involving the Queen's Egg) might count for half. Notable tasks that seem mandatory include "Restoration of Bellhart" and "Strengthening Song Clave." If the quest board still has active notices, it is highly likely the subsequent triggers for Act 3 will remain locked.
2. The Flea Caravan’s final destination
Finding the lost fleas is one of the most extensive collection tasks in the game, but it serves a functional purpose for the Act 3 unlock. To progress, the Flea Caravan must move to its final safe haven, often referred to as Fleatopia or the Pale Lake area within the Putrefied Ducts.
This migration happens in stages:
- First Move: Rescue 5 fleas to move them from the Marrow to Greymoor.
- Second Move: Rescue 15 fleas to push the caravan toward the Blasted Steps near the Grand Gate.
- Final Move: Upon rescuing 25 to 30 fleas, the caravan will relocate to the Putrefied Ducts. You must visit them in this final location and speak with the caravan leader to confirm their safety. This movement is a hard requirement for the "Silk and Soul" quest to trigger.
3. Establishing your Bell Home
After completing the core missions in Bellhart, specifically the "Bellhart’s Glory" donation quest, an NPC named Pavo will grant you the key to your own Bell Home. This room, located in the upper-left section of Bellhart's main chamber, serves as a hub for late-game reflection. While it seems cosmetic at first, obtaining this key is a flag the game checks before allowing the final questline to begin.
Initiating the Silk and Soul questline
Once the prerequisites are met, return to Song Clave. If you have fulfilled the requirements and defeated the Act 2 final boss at least once (witnessing the "standard" ending), speak with the Caretaker. They will offer an alternative strategy for dealing with Grandmother Silk—one that doesn't involve Hornet's sacrifice but instead focuses on trapping the source of the silk.
This starts the "Silk and Soul" wish. You are tasked with gathering four specific components from across the map to construct a soul-binding trap.
Finding the Maiden’s Soul
The first component is the Maiden’s Soul. This involves returning to your very first encounter in Bone Bottom. Travel to the far left of the settlement to find the Chapel Maid. If you have progressed far enough, she will provide the soul after a brief dialogue. In some world states, if the Skull Tyrant has not been dealt with near the ruined chapel, she may not appear. Ensure the immediate area is clear of major threats so the NPC scripts can trigger properly.
Finding the Hermit’s Soul
The Hermit’s Soul belongs to the Bell Hermit, a reclusive figure tucked away in the lower plumbing of Bellhart. To find him, drop down from the fast travel point in Bellhart and look for a destructible wall on the right side of the vertical shaft. Beyond this wall is a series of pipes leading to a secluded chamber. The Hermit will relinquish his soul once he recognizes your intent to end the Weaver's curse. It’s worth noting that your interaction with him earlier in the game doesn't seem to lock this out, but you must have the quest active for the item to drop.
Finding the Seeker’s Soul
This is arguably the most difficult component to acquire due to the boss fight involved. The Seeker’s Soul is located in the region of Bile Water, which is accessed through Sinner’s Road in Greymoor. This area is hazardous, featuring environmental pools that drain your silk and health rapidly.
Deep within Bile Water, you must confront Gro Al the Great. This boss uses maggot-based projectiles that apply a debuff, making silk regeneration nearly impossible. After defeating Gro Al, enter the structure to the left of the boss arena. The Seeker’s Soul sits on an altar within a deserted bell home. Having a high-level Needle and the double-jump ability is highly recommended before attempting this fight.
Locating the Snare Setter
The final piece is the Snare Setter, found in a sub-zone called Weavenest at La. This area is hidden behind a heavy metal door in the eastern section of the Moss Grotto. To open it, you must play the Needolin at the door mechanism.
Once inside, look for a hidden opening in the ceiling between the final light fixture and the water pool in the main corridor. This requires a precise double-jump or a well-timed wall kick. The Snare Setter is located on a table in the room above. This item is the mechanical heart of the trap and completes the collection phase of the quest.
The confrontation and the trap mechanic
With all four items in your inventory, return to the Caretaker in Song Clave. They will forge the Soul Snare. The final step involves returning to the Citadel and ascending back to the Cradle, the arena where Grandmother Silk resides.
On the path leading to the boss, the Caretaker will appear one last time to confirm the trap is ready. Enter the boss fight as you normally would. The first phase of the fight remains largely unchanged, but the ending sequence is where the transition to Act 3 occurs.
In the standard fight, you are prompted to "Bind" the boss. Do not simply press the button for the standard ending. Instead, when the prompt appears, you must use your Needolin ability. This triggers a unique cutscene where the Soul Snare is deployed, trapping the essence of the silk and unleashing a surge of Void energy throughout Pharloom.
Breaking the vines: Entering the Abyss
After the cutscene concludes, the game will return you to the main menu. This can be confusing for players who expect an immediate transition. However, look closely at your save file. The background of the save slot will now be covered in dark, writhing Void tendrils.
To enter Act 3, you must "break" into your save. Repeatedly press the confirm button (or the attack button) on the save slot. With each hit, the Void vines will crack and shatter. Once they are fully cleared, the game will load, and you will find Hornet standing in the altered version of Pharloom. The skybox will have changed to a deep, dark purple, and the map will be significantly altered.
What to expect in Act 3
Act 3 is essentially the "True Ending" path and represents the peak difficulty of Silksong. It opens up the Abyss region—a subterranean expanse that sits beneath the Deep Docks.
Map changes and navigation
Many of the shortcuts you relied on in Act 2 may now be blocked by Void growths, while new paths have opened up. The eastern area of the Deep Docks now contains a mechanism that responds to the Claw Line, allowing you to descend into the heart of the Abyss. This new zone is non-linear and features some of the most complex platforming challenges in the game.
New threats and bosses
The enemies in Act 3 are substantially stronger. Standard foes from previous acts often appear in "Void-touched" forms, possessing more health and aggressive attack patterns. Furthermore, Act 3 contains approximately a dozen optional bosses that are not required for the standard credits but are necessary for 100% completion. These bosses often guard the "Psalm Cylinders," which are vital for upgrading your final abilities.
The importance of the Cooking Quest
A small but vital tip for Act 3 survival: ensure you have finished the cooking quest from the earlier acts. The upgrades provided by the chef—specifically the damage boost from the Crustnut dish—are almost essential for dealing with the inflated health pools of Abyss-tier enemies. If you missed ingredients like the Courier's Rasher in the earlier acts, it may be harder to find them now, though the game usually provides alternative ways to source them in the ruined world state.
Strategic advice for the Abyss
As you descend, your focus should shift from exploration to survival. The Abyss does not forgive mistakes.
- Upgrade your Needle: If you haven't reached the maximum upgrade level for your weapon, do so before venturing too deep into the Putrefied Ducts or the Abyss proper. The damage threshold required to stagger Act 3 bosses is significantly higher.
- Manage your Silk: The Void environment often features hazards that drain your silk meter. Equipping charms or tools that increase silk generation from hits is a safer bet than relying on passive regeneration.
- The Threefold Melody: Ensure you have found the parts of the Threefold Melody and played them at the Cogwork Dancers arena. This unlocks an additional defensive layer that can be a lifesaver during the final gauntlet of the Abyss.
Reaching Act 3 is a testament to a player's mastery over Pharloom's systems. While the road is long and requires backtracking through some of the game's most dangerous territories, the narrative payoff and the sheer scale of the Abyss make it the definitive way to experience Silksong. The change in atmosphere from the vibrant, silk-laden heights of the Citadel to the oppressive, silent depths of the Abyss provides a powerful contrast that defines the game's true ending.
