How to Married in Stardew Valley: The Steps You Actually Need to Follow
Stardew Valley is much more than a farming simulator. While planting parsnips and mining for copper keeps the gold flowing, the heart of the game often lies in the connections you build with the residents of Pelican Town. Finding a partner to share your farmhouse with is a major milestone that offers both emotional satisfaction and practical gameplay benefits. Whether you are aiming for the efficiency of having a spouse help with chores or you simply want to see those extra heart events, understanding the mechanics of how to married in Stardew Valley is essential for a complete experience.
Identifying the Marriage Candidates
Before you can think about weddings, you need to know who is eligible. In Pelican Town, there are 12 primary candidates—six bachelors and six bachelorettes. You can check their status in the social tab; anyone marked as "Single" is a potential partner, regardless of your character's gender.
The Bachelors
- Alex: The aspiring pro athlete often found near the beach or his grandmother's house.
- Elliott: A writer living in a cabin by the sea who appreciates the finer things.
- Harvey: The town doctor who values health and coffee.
- Sam: A musician and skater who brings a youthful energy to the valley.
- Sebastian: A rebellious programmer who spends a lot of time in his basement room.
- Shane: A complex character working at JojaMart who eventually finds solace in raising chickens.
The Bachelorettes
- Abigail: A quirky soul who loves exploring the mines and playing the flute.
- Emily: A seamstress with a vibrant personality and a deep connection to the spirit world.
- Haley: A photography enthusiast who starts off cold but warms up significantly.
- Leah: An artist living in the forest who values nature and creative expression.
- Maru: A brilliant scientist and tinkerer who helps her father in the lab.
- Penny: A soft-spoken teacher who dreams of having a family of her own.
The Long Road to Eight Hearts
The journey begins with friendship. Friendship in Stardew Valley is measured in hearts, with each heart representing 250 friendship points. For marriage candidates, the progress bar initially caps at eight hearts. To get there, you must engage in consistent social interaction.
Talking to your chosen candidate every day grants a small amount of points. However, the most effective way to climb the ranks is through gifting. You can give two gifts per week, plus an additional gift on their birthday. Birthdays are high-stakes events—a loved gift given on a birthday provides eight times the normal friendship boost, often jumping the relationship by two full hearts instantly.
To optimize this process, it is useful to learn "Universal Loves." Items like Rabbit's Feet (except for Penny), Prismatic Shards (except for Haley), and Golden Pumpkins are safe bets for almost everyone. More common "Universal Likes" include most artisan goods (like Honey or Wine), flowers, and cooked dishes. Just be wary of individual dislikes; giving a doctor like Harvey a piece of junk or a sugary snack he hates can set your progress back significantly.
Crossing the Threshold: The Bouquet
Once you reach the eight-heart milestone, the game’s social mechanics change. You will receive a letter from Pierre mentioning a special item in his shop: the Bouquet. This item costs 200g and serves as a formal declaration of romantic interest.
Giving the Bouquet to an eight-heart candidate will unlock their final two friendship hearts, allowing you to reach level ten. Their status in the social tab will also change to "Boyfriend" or "Girlfriend." It is important to note that you can give Bouquets to multiple candidates at once if you want to see all the ten-heart events. However, doing so carries a risk; if you are dating all the bachelors or all the bachelorettes simultaneously and have reached ten hearts with all of them, a specific group event might trigger where they confront you about your polyamory (unless you carry a Rabbit's Foot in your inventory to turn the confrontation into a fun evening).
The Infrastructure Requirement: Upgrading the Farmhouse
You cannot bring a spouse home to a tiny starter cabin. Before the game allows you to propose, you must have upgraded your farmhouse at least once. This first upgrade costs 10,000g and 450 Wood, which you can commission at Robin's Carpenter Shop. This renovation adds a kitchen and a separate bedroom, providing the space necessary for another person to live with you.
While not strictly required for the wedding itself, many players opt for the second upgrade (50,000g and 150 Hardwood) shortly after marriage to add a nursery, which is the prerequisite for having or adopting children later on.
Securing the Mermaid's Pendant
Once you are at ten hearts with your partner and have upgraded your house, you are ready for the final step: the proposal. In the world of Stardew Valley, you don't use a diamond ring (unless you are playing multiplayer). Instead, you follow an ancient local tradition involving the Mermaid's Pendant.
To find this amulet, you must head to the Beach on a rainy day. You will need to have repaired the bridge on the right side of the beach (costing 300 Wood) to access the tidal pools. There, an NPC known as the Old Mariner will appear. If you meet all the criteria—10 hearts, a house upgrade, and a rainy day—he will sell you the Mermaid's Pendant for 5,000g.
A common challenge arises during the Winter season. Since it does not naturally rain in Winter (it only snows), the Old Mariner will not normally appear. To circumvent this, you must use a Rain Totem, a craftable item that forces the next day to be rainy. This is a vital tip for players who reach their ten-heart goal during the cold months and don't want to wait until Spring to tie the knot.
The Wedding Ceremony
After you present the Mermaid's Pendant to your partner and they accept, the wedding is scheduled for three days later. If you propose on a Monday, the wedding will take place as soon as you wake up on Thursday. The only exception is if a major festival is happening in the town square on that day, in which case the ceremony will be pushed back by one day.
The wedding is a beautiful cutscene in the town square involving Mayor Lewis and the other villagers. Once the ceremony ends, you will find yourself back at the farmhouse at 6:00 AM. Your spouse has officially moved in.
Life as a Married Couple
Marriage changes the daily rhythm of your farm life. Your spouse will now have a maximum heart level of 14. Maintaining a high relationship level is crucial for a happy home. You should continue to talk to them daily and give them gifts they love.
Benefits of Marriage
A happy spouse (usually at 12 hearts or higher) will occasionally perform chores around the farm, including:
- Watering Crops: They will water all your crops, which is helpful if you haven't fully automated with sprinklers yet.
- Feeding Animals: They will fill the hay troughs in your barns and coops.
- Watering the Pet Bowl: A small but sweet gesture for your dog or cat.
- Repairing Fences: They will fix any decaying fences that might be letting animals wander or looking unsightly.
- Cooking: They may give you breakfast or dinner items, such as Omelets, Pancakes, or even more complex dishes like Fried Eel.
Perhaps the most significant reward is the Stardrop. Once you reach 12.5 hearts with your spouse, they will gift you a Stardrop, which permanently increases your maximum energy. This is a one-time benefit per save file (or per spouse if you choose to remarry).
The Spouse's Space
When a character moves in, they bring a piece of their personality with them. A small room unique to that character will be added to the right side of your bedroom. For example, Sebastian will have a computer-filled gaming room, while Leah will have an art studio. Additionally, they will set up a small area behind the farmhouse for their hobbies, such as a workout area for Alex or a flute-playing spot for Abigail.
How to married in Stardew Valley Multiplayer
If you are playing in a co-op world with friends, the process for marrying another player is different from marrying an NPC. You do not use the Mermaid's Pendant. Instead, you must craft a Wedding Ring.
The recipe for the Wedding Ring can be purchased from the Traveling Cart (located in Cindersap Forest on Fridays and Sundays) for 500g. Crafting it is an endgame task, requiring:
- 5 Iridium Bars
- 1 Prismatic Shard
Once crafted, you can present the ring to your fellow player. If they accept, the wedding ceremony proceeds in the same three-day timeline as the NPC version. Both players will receive a Stardrop in a purple box by their beds after the wedding.
Potential Challenges and the Jealousy Mechanic
Even after the wedding, you must be mindful of your behavior. Stardew Valley features a jealousy mechanic. If you give a gift (that isn't a birthday gift) to another marriage candidate of the same gender as your spouse, there is a chance (ranging from 20% to 40% depending on your daily luck) that your spouse will become jealous. They may mention it in dialogue the next morning, and you will suffer a minor friendship point penalty.
Furthermore, your spouse's pathfinding is important. If you clutter the farmhouse with furniture or machines that block their usual path, they will become frustrated. Walking into a spouse who is "trapped" by furniture can lead to grumpy dialogue about the house being messy.
Expanding the Family: Children
If you have the second farmhouse upgrade (the one with the nursery and cribs) and maintain at least ten hearts with your spouse, there is a random chance each night (approximately 5%) that they will ask if you want to have or adopt a child.
- Biological Children: For opposite-sex couples, the spouse will ask if you want to have a baby. If you agree, the baby will appear in the crib after 14 days.
- Adoption: For same-sex couples, the spouse will ask if you want to adopt. If you agree, the adoption agency will drop off the baby in the middle of the night after 14 days.
You can have a maximum of two children (one boy and one girl). They progress through four stages: sleeping, crawling, standing, and eventually running around the house. While they never grow up to help with farm work, they add a sense of life and progression to your home.
When Things Go Wrong: Divorce
Sometimes, a marriage doesn't work out, or perhaps you want to experience the heart events of a different character. Stardew Valley allows for divorce via a ledger in Mayor Lewis's house. It costs 50,000g.
After filing for divorce, your spouse will move out the next morning. Their friendship level will drop to zero, and their social status will change to "Ex-spouse." They will generally refuse to speak to you and will have bitter dialogue if you try to interact with them. If you have children, they will remain at the farmhouse with you.
For those who regret their choice or want to reset their relationship, there is a late-game option. By visiting the Witch’s Hut and offering a specific tribute to the Dark Shrine of Memory, you can wipe your ex-spouse's memory. They will forget the marriage ever happened, allowing you to build a friendship (or even a new romance) from scratch.
Summary of the Marriage Checklist
To ensure you don't miss a step in your quest to get married, keep this checklist in mind:
- Select your partner: Check the social tab for the "Single" tag.
- Raise hearts to 8: Use gifts and daily conversations.
- Give the Bouquet: Buy it for 200g at Pierre’s.
- Raise hearts to 10: Continue gifting and trigger the 10-heart event.
- Upgrade the house: Visit Robin for the 10,000g kitchen upgrade.
- Repair the beach bridge: 300 Wood allows access to the Old Mariner.
- Buy the Mermaid's Pendant: 5,000g on a rainy day (use a Rain Totem in Winter).
- Propose: Give the pendant to your partner.
- The Wedding: Wait three days for the ceremony.
By following these steps, you can successfully navigate the social complexities of Pelican Town. Marriage is a rewarding system that deepens your connection to the game world and provides a steady companion for your farming adventures. Whether you choose the artistic Leah, the studious Harvey, or the energetic Abigail, your life in the valley is bound to be more colorful with a partner by your side.
