KCD2 Dragon Bones Location and How to Beat the Hidden Timer
Finding the dragon bones in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is one of the more deceptive challenges in the early-to-mid game. While the quest "Dragon’s Lair" sounds like a typical high-fantasy hunt, the reality is grounded in the game's signature medieval realism. The mystery starts in the village of Bylany, but many players find themselves empty-handed because they don't realize that time is actually a factor. If you delay your search, the bones will simply vanish, taken by rivals who were faster than Henry.
Starting the Dragon’s Lair quest in Bylany
The quest initiates in Bylany, a small settlement located southwest of Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora). To get things moving, speak with Monk Slava. He is preoccupied with rumors of ancient remains found nearby—remains that the superstitious locals believe belong to a dragon. Slava wants the Church to handle the discovery to prevent heresy or panic, but he needs Henry to act as a messenger and investigator.
Initially, the quest requires a trip to Kuttenberg to speak with Abbot Jan III. During this stage, you will also encounter Gerhard, a merchant with a different perspective. While the Abbot wants the bones destroyed to maintain religious order, Gerhard offers a more lucrative alternative: find the bones and sell them to him for a profit. This setup introduces the primary moral conflict of the quest, balancing your reputation with the Church against the need for Groschen.
The ambush and the informant
After returning to Bylany to update Slava, the situation escalates. An alchemist named Leopold arrives, accompanied by hired muscle. He isn't interested in religious purity; he wants the bones for their supposed alchemical properties. This encounter typically results in a brawl. While you can attempt to use speech checks to de-escalate, they are notoriously difficult at this stage. If combat starts, pulling a weapon usually scares off the thugs, though a fistfight is the more "honorable" way to handle it according to the village's social standing.
Once the thugs are dealt with, your next objective is to find Vashek, the woodcutter who originally found the site. He can be found at the local tavern. Getting the exact location from him requires either a successful speech check (Eloquence or Intimidation) or a bribe of 200 Groschen. If your stats are low, paying the coin is often the most efficient path, as the information he provides is the only way to progress the quest marker to the next phase.
Understanding the hidden timer mechanics
The most critical aspect of the "Dragon’s Lair" quest is the hidden countdown. The moment you finish your conversation with Vashek, the clock starts ticking. The game does not provide a visible timer on the UI, but if you spend more than a day or two engaging in other side activities, you will arrive at the dig site only to find an empty hole and a discarded shovel.
If the bones are gone, the quest doesn't technically fail, but it becomes significantly more difficult. You will have to track down who stole them by investigating the village further and confronting the thieves. To avoid this unnecessary headache, it is highly recommended to head straight from the tavern in Bylany to the woods without stopping for sleep or gear repairs.
Precise navigation to the dragon bones location
Vashek’s directions are intentionally vague, mirroring how a medieval woodcutter would describe the wilderness. Following his instructions literally can lead to hours of wandering in the dense forests southwest of Bylany.
To find the site efficiently, use the following landmarks:
- The Woodcutters' Camp: Start at the camp located southwest of the village. This is your primary anchor point.
- The Stream: From the camp, head further southwest until you hit a small stream.
- The Fork: Follow the stream upstream (westward). You will quickly reach a point where the stream splits. Take the right-hand fork.
- The Clearing: Continue along this path, passing through thick brush. You will eventually emerge into a clearing characterized by white rocks and sandy soil.
Henry will usually provide a voice line confirmation once you enter the correct zone. Look for a patch of disturbed earth on the southwestern edge of this clearing. This is where you need to use your spade.
The confrontation at the dig site
If you arrive on time and begin digging during the day, you won't be alone for long. As soon as the bones are unearthed, Leopold the Alchemist and his men will arrive, shortly followed by a group of soldiers sent by Gerhard or the Church. This leads to a three-way standoff.
You have several ways to resolve this:
- Diplomacy: With high Charisma or Speech (20+ points), you can convince the parties to split the find. This usually results in Henry keeping one or two bones while the others take the rest. It is the safest path but offers the lowest individual reward.
- Combat: If you choose to fight, be prepared for a difficult encounter. You will be outnumbered. The best strategy is to focus on Leopold’s unarmored men first to thin the numbers, then use Master Strikes and clinches to deal with the armored soldiers. Looting the commander after the fight provides a high-quality sword and decent armor pieces.
- The Midnight Trick: There is a tactical workaround. If you arrive at the clearing but wait until after midnight (24:00) to start digging, the other NPCs often fail to spawn or appear much later. This allows Henry to collect all the trophies—the Huge Dragon Bone, the Strange Dragon Bone, and the Dragon Claw—without a massive brawl.
Decisions: Slava vs. Gerhard
Once the bones are in your inventory, you must decide their fate.
Option 1: Giving the bones to Monk Slava This is the "moral" choice. Slava will take the bones to be destroyed or buried in hallowed ground to appease the villagers' fears. You receive a significant boost to your reputation in Bylany and with the Church, but you receive 0 Groschen. If you are playing a character focused on honor and Christian piety, this is the intended path.
Option 2: Selling the bones to Gerhard Gerhard can be found back in Kuttenberg. He will pay 275 Groschen for the set. This is a substantial amount of money in the early game. Choosing this path will not grant the reputation bonus, but it doesn't significantly penalize you unless you are caught stealing the bones later.
Option 3: The Deceptive Route With a high enough Speech or Charisma check, you can lie to Monk Slava. You can tell him there was only one bone (the Huge Dragon Bone) at the site. If he believes you, you can give him the one bone to satisfy the quest requirements and keep the "Strange Dragon Bone" and "Dragon Claw" for yourself. While these items currently serve primarily as high-value trophies or curiosities, they can be sold to various traders later for extra cash.
Inventory value and the "Huge Dragon Bone"
It is worth noting that despite the quest's name, the items you find are not from a mythical dragon. Within the context of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s realism, these are likely megafauna fossils or remains of an extinct species that the medieval mind cannot categorize.
The "Huge Dragon Bone" is a miscellaneous item that takes up considerable weight in your saddlebags. If you aren't planning on handing it in immediately, ensure your horse has enough capacity. There is currently no crafting recipe that utilizes these bones; they are strictly quest items or high-value vendor trash. However, keeping them in your trunk at the mill is a popular choice for players who want a unique souvenir of their hunt.
Summary of rewards and requirements
To ensure a successful completion of the Dragon's Lair quest, keep the following checklist in mind:
- Required Tool: A spade (purchase one in Kuttenberg or Bylany before heading out).
- Timing: Complete the search within 24 hours of talking to Vashek.
- Combat Readiness: Ensure your armor is repaired and you have a few Marigold decoctions, as the fight in the clearing can be unpredictable.
- Reputation vs. Gold: Decide beforehand if you need the 275 Groschen or the local favor more.
By following the stream to the white rock clearing and acting quickly, you can secure the KCD2 dragon bones before the competition even realizes you've left the tavern. Whether you choose to be a faithful servant of the Church or a pragmatic mercenary is up to you, but don't let the hidden timer make that choice for you.
