In the sprawling kingdom of Pharloom, survival is dictated by the sharpness of your blade. While Hornet begins her journey with a formidable needle, the scaling difficulty of enemies in the Choral Chambers and the later areas of the Citadel demands something more. This is where Pale Oil comes in. Acting as the Silk-world equivalent to Pale Ore, Pale Oil is the rarest and most essential upgrade material for your primary weapon.

Acquiring every bottle of Pale Oil requires more than just exploration; it involves mastering complex puzzles, completing lengthy fetch quests, and proving your worth in high-stakes minigames. This article breaks down exactly where to find every drop of Pale Oil and how to ensure Pinmaster Plinney keeps your needle at its lethal peak.

The Pinmaster and the Town of Bellhart

Before you can even think about using Pale Oil, you must establish your base of operations in Bellhart. This central hub is initially inaccessible or limited until you complete the early-game objectives in Shellwood.

To unlock the services of Pinmaster Plinney, you must first defeat the Widow boss and clear the cursed thread gripping Bellhart. Once the town is restored, NPCs will return, and the upper-right section of the town—accessible by climbing the series of ladders past the bell home—will open up. This is Plinney’s workshop.

Upon your first arrival, Plinney offers a complimentary sharpen. This first upgrade is free and does not require Pale Oil, but it sets the stage for the rest of your progression. After this initial boost, Plinney will inform you that further refinement requires the rare, glistening substance known as Pale Oil. Talking to him repeatedly after the first upgrade will officially add the "Pinmaster’s Oil" wish to your quest board.

Location 1: The Whispering Vaults Crate Puzzle

The most accessible Pale Oil for players entering Act 2 is hidden within the Whispering Vaults. This area, found deep beneath the Citadel's Cogwork Core, is a labyrinth of machinery and ancient storage. The item is located in a secluded chamber on the left side of the main vertical shaft, but reaching it requires solving a physics-based crate puzzle that has stumped many explorers.

To reach the puzzle room, descend through the Cogwork Core. You will need a degree of platforming precision, as you’ll be bouncing off moving gears to reach the upper-right entrance. Once inside the specific chamber, you will see several large metal crates on sliding tracks.

Follow these steps to clear the path:

  1. Upper Right Movement: Climb to the far right of the room and strike the highest box to slide it to the left.
  2. Creating a Platform: Use the newly positioned box to reach the upper-middle section. There is another box here; hit it to the left to clear the central walkway.
  3. The Downward Strike: Stand on the central box and use a downward strike (pogo) on the vertical set of boxes below you. This will push them into a slot in the floor, revealing a lower crawlspace.
  4. The Final Lever: Drop into the lower section and hit the boxes from underneath with an upward strike. This clears the final blockage leading to a lever. Pulling the lever opens a hatch that leads directly to the Pale Oil orb resting in a small, well-lit side room.

Location 2: The Great Taste of Pharloom Quest

The second Pale Oil is not found lying on the ground; it is earned through what many consider the most involved side quest in the game. In the dining area of the Choral Chambers, located to the right of the Citadel Spa, you will find an NPC named Loyal Merg Win. He is a connoisseur of Pharloom’s delicacies and will offer you a bottle of Pale Oil in exchange for five specific ingredients from across the map.

Completing this quest requires significant backtracking and combat prowess. Here is where to find the five items:

1. Vintage Nectar (Greymoor)

Travel to the Halfway Home tavern in Greymoor. The bartender, Creige, will sell you this for 480 Rosaries. However, the purchase is a trap. Once you pay and enter the cellar to collect the nectar, the doors lock, and you must survive three waves of aggressive red ants. Only after the room is cleared can you walk away with the nectar.

2. Moss Berry Stew (Bone Bottom)

This is the simplest ingredient. Speak to the Moss Druid at the highest point of Bone Bottom. He requires several Moss Berries, which are abundant in the surrounding foliage. If you have been exploring thoroughly, you likely already have enough in your inventory to complete this sub-quest immediately.

3. Crustnut (Sands of Karak)

Located in the optional Sands of Karak area, above the Blasted Steps. You will need the Grapple and Double Jump to navigate the Spinstress’s hut area to reach the sands. The Crustnut is hidden behind a breakable wall directly beneath the arena where you fight the Conch Fly. It’s guarded by several burrowing enemies, so stay mobile.

4. Pickled Muck Maggot (Sinner’s Road)

This item is a boss drop. Head to the eastern kitchen area of Sinner’s Road. Ring the service bell to initiate a fight against the staff. After clearing the smaller bugs, Chef Lugoli will emerge. He uses a heavy ground-pound that launches green gunk across the arena. This gunk inflicts a "poison" status that prevents healing for a short duration. Focus on quick stabs and retreating until he finishes his slam animation. Defeating him yields the Maggot.

5. Courier’s Rasher (Bellhart)

This is the final and most difficult step. After rescuing the citizens of Bellhart, a bug near the town entrance will offer the Rasher as a delivery quest. The catch? The item spoils if you take damage or take too long.

Strategy Tip: To complete the Rasher delivery, first clear every enemy on the path from Bellhart through the Blasted Steps to the Choral Chambers without resting at a bench. Once the path is clear, return to the quest giver, pick up the Rasher, and sprint. Using the Citadel Spa shortcut is highly recommended as it contains no enemies and allows for a safe entry into the dining hall.

Once all five ingredients are delivered to Merg Win, he rewards you with the second Pale Oil.

Location 3: Flea Topia and the Festival of the Flea

The final Pale Oil is reserved for the late game (Act 3). It is tied to the Flea Caravan, a group of NPCs you will encounter throughout Pharloom. To unlock the final upgrade, you must find and rescue at least 30 Fleas scattered across the kingdom.

Once the Fleas have moved to their final sanctuary in Flea Topia (located within the Putrified Ducts), the "Ecstasy of the End" wish will appear on the Bellhart board. This quest invites you to participate in the Flea Festival.

In Flea Topia, speak to Fleamaster Mooshka. You must play and win three specific minigames:

  • Juggle: Keep a small mechanical bug in the air using only upward needle strikes for 60 seconds.
  • Dodge: Stand in a small arena and avoid falling bells and projectiles from the crowd.
  • Bounce: Use your pogo jump to cross a series of disappearing platforms without touching the floor.

Winning all three games triggers a celebration where a large piñata is lowered. Break it to claim the third and final Pale Oil.

Important: Finding Plinney in Act 3

A common point of confusion for players occurs during the transition to Act 3. Upon returning to Bellhart with the final Pale Oil, you may find Plinney’s workshop abandoned. A note on the door indicates he has headed toward the Shellwood to gather materials.

To get your final upgrade, you must track him down south of the Shellwood Bellway. He is cornered by Void Pilgrims in a graveyard area. You must defeat the gauntlet of enemies to rescue him. Once saved, he returns to Bellhart. Note that for the second and third upgrades, Plinney will charge approximately 500 to 800 Rosaries in addition to the Pale Oil. While it may seem steep, the damage increase is substantial, often reducing the number of hits required to kill standard mobs by half.

Needle Upgrade Progression and Scaling

Each upgrade provided by Pale Oil increases your base damage significantly. While Silksong does not display raw numerical values in the same way an RPG might, testing against the armored sentries in the Citadel reveals a clear progression:

  1. Standard Needle: Basic damage, requires multiple hits for almost all enemies.
  2. First Upgrade (Free): Sharpens the blade, allowing for one-hit kills on the weakest crawlers.
  3. Second Upgrade (1st Pale Oil): Substantial boost. This is the sweet spot for Act 2 bosses, making the Cogwork Dancers much more manageable.
  4. Final Upgrade (2nd/3rd Pale Oil): The "Masterwork" needle. This level of damage is almost mandatory for the secret bosses in the White Ward and the final ascent of the Citadel.

Using Pale Oil should be your top priority. While tools and silk-abilities provide utility, your primary needle is your most consistent source of damage. If you find yourself struggling with boss patterns, it is often a sign that you have bypassed a Pale Oil location.

Summary of Requirements

  • First Upgrade: Free (Unlock Bellhart).
  • Second Upgrade: 1 Pale Oil + 500 Rosaries.
  • Third Upgrade: 1 Pale Oil + 800 Rosaries.
  • Fourth Upgrade: 1 Pale Oil + 1200 Rosaries.

By following the steps in the Whispering Vaults, completing the culinary demands of Merg Win, and celebrating with the Fleas in the Putrified Ducts, you will possess a weapon capable of carving through anything Pharloom throws at you. Don't forget to keep a healthy supply of Rosaries on hand, as the Pinmaster’s expertise is legendary, but his charity ends after the first sharpening.
