Pokemon Ruby Walkthrough: Beating the Hoenn League in Record Time
Hoenn remains one of the most diverse regions in the Pokemon world, featuring a mix of dense jungles, vast oceans, and volcanic landscapes. Navigating Pokemon Ruby successfully requires a solid understanding of team composition and path optimization. This breakdown covers the essential steps from leaving Littleroot Town to dethroning the Champion at the Pokemon League.
Choosing Your Foundation in Littleroot Town
The journey begins in a moving truck. After setting the clock and meeting your rival, the first major decision arises at Route 101. Professor Birch is under attack, and the choice of your starter Pokemon dictates the difficulty curve for the first half of the game.
Treecko (Grass): Known for high Speed and Special Attack. It excels against the first and last Gym Leaders but struggles mid-game against Flannery and Winona. It requires a strategic support team to handle Fire and Flying types.
Torchic (Fire): Evolves into Combusken, a Fire/Fighting type. This dual typing is incredibly useful for the Normal-type gym and the Dark-type Elite Four member. However, the early game is challenging until it learns Double Kick.
Mudkip (Water): Generally considered the optimal choice for a smooth run. Once it evolves into Marshtomp, it gains the Ground typing, granting it immunity to Electric moves. This makes the third gym a breeze and provides a sturdy tank for the entire adventure.
The First Badge: Rustboro City and the Rock Challenge
After clearing the early routes and Petalburg Woods—where the first encounter with Team Magma occurs—Rustboro City serves as the first major milestone.
Gym Leader Roxanne uses Rock-type Pokemon. If you chose Treecko or Mudkip, this battle is straightforward. For Torchic users, catching a Shroomish in Petalburg Woods is highly recommended. Shroomish learns Mega Drain early, providing the necessary Type advantage to sweep Roxanne’s Geodude and Nosepass. Upon victory, the Stone Badge allows the use of HM01 (Cut) outside of battle.
Navigating the Sea: Dewford and the Granite Cave
Post-Rustboro, the mission involves rescuing Mr. Briney’s Wingull and securing the Devon Goods. Traveling by boat to Dewford Town opens up the second Gym. Brawly specializes in Fighting types. While Taillow (found on Route 104) or Wingull can carry the team here, players should be cautious of Makuhita’s Bulk Up move, which raises its Attack and Defense.
Before leaving Dewford, visiting Granite Cave is mandatory to deliver a letter to Steven. It is advisable to pick up the Old Rod from the fisherman nearby to start fishing for Magikarp or Tentacool, both of which evolve into powerhouses later.
The Electric Surge in Mauville City
Taking the boat to Slateport City leads to the first major confrontation with Team Magma at the Oceanic Museum. After clearing the grunts, Route 110 leads north to Mauville City. This route is notable for the Seaside Cycling Road, but more importantly, the encounter with your rival near the Weather Institute.
In Mauville, Gym Leader Wattson utilizes Electric types. Magneton is his most dangerous asset due to its Steel typing, which resists many common attacks. A Ground-type move is almost essential here. If Marshtomp isn't in the party, catching a Geodude or a Numel on the outskirts of the city can provide the necessary coverage. After winning the Dynamo Badge, players must choose between the Mach Bike (speed) and the Acro Bike (maneuverability) at Rydel's Cycles. For a first playthrough, the Mach Bike is often better for clearing long routes quickly.
The Heat of Mt. Chimney and Lavaridge Town
The path north leads to the fiery slopes of Mt. Chimney. Players must navigate through the Fiery Path to reach Fallarbor Town, eventually circling back to the mountain's peak via the Cable Car. The battle against Team Magma Leader Maxie here is the first true test of team synergy.
Lavaridge Town sits at the base of the mountain, home to Flannery and her Fire-type team. Her Torkoal uses Overheat, a move with devastating power. Having a Water-type with high Special Defense or using the move Rain Dance can mitigate this threat. Winning here grants the Heat Badge and the ability to use Strength, which is vital for the upcoming puzzles.
The Family Reunion: Petalburg City Revisited
With four badges in hand, returning to Petalburg City to challenge Norman, the protagonist's father, is finally possible. Norman’s Slaking is a statistical monster, but it possesses the Truant ability, meaning it only moves every other turn.
A viable strategy is using a Pokemon with Protect or Detect to nullify Slaking's active turns. Alternatively, a fast Fighting-type like Hariyama or Combusken can deal massive damage during the windows Slaking is vulnerable. The Balance Badge is a significant reward, as it allows the use of Surf, unlocking nearly half of the Hoenn map.
The Lush Canopy of Fortree City
Surfing across Route 118 leads to the more tropical eastern half of Hoenn. Route 119 is long and often rainy, featuring the Weather Institute where players receive a Castform after defeating Team Magma once more.
Fortree City features treehouse dwellings and a Gym blocked by an invisible force. Meeting Steven on Route 120 provides the Devon Scope, revealing the Kecleon blocking the path. Gym Leader Winona uses Flying types. Her Altaria is the primary threat, capable of using Dragon Dance to sweep an unprepared team. An Ice-type move (like Ice Beam, which can be found at the Abandoned Ship) makes this fight much safer. Manectric with Thunderbolt is also a strong choice for this encounter.
The Deep Blue: Mossdeep and the Seafloor Cavern
The journey shifts to the ocean. From Lilycove City, home to the massive Department Store and the Team Magma Hideout, players must travel east to Mossdeep City.
Gym Leaders Tate and Liza participate in a Double Battle, a unique mechanic in the Hoenn region. Their Lunatone and Solrock have Levitate, making Ground moves useless. Using a combination of Surf (which hits both opponents) and Dark-type moves is the most efficient way to win.
Following the gym battle, the quest to stop Team Magma leads to the Seafloor Cavern. This requires HM08 (Dive), obtained from Steven. The battle against Maxie in the depths of the ocean precedes the awakening of Groudon, which triggers a massive drought across the region.
The Sootopolis Crisis and the Final Badge
Groudon retreats to the Cave of Origin in Sootopolis City. This is the scripted encounter for the legendary Pokemon. In Pokemon Ruby, catching Groudon is highly recommended; its Drought ability and massive Attack stat make it an MVP for the Elite Four. Using a Master Ball is an option, though many prefer saving it for roaming legendaries like Latios.
After the weather is stabilized, Wallace, the Sootopolis Gym Leader, can be challenged. His Water-type team is vulnerable to Grass and Electric moves. His Milotic is particularly bulky and uses Recover, so a high-damage finisher is needed to prevent a stalemate. Victory here grants the Rain Badge, allowing the use of Waterfall to reach Ever Grande City.
The Road to Greatness: Victory Road
Victory Road is the final gauntlet. It requires multiple HMs, including Flash, Strength, Rock Smash, Surf, and Waterfall. It is a long trek filled with high-level trainers. This is the prime location for final grinding; ensuring the team is at least Level 50 is suggested before exiting the cave and reaching the Pokemon League headquarters.
Conquering the Elite Four and the Champion
The Elite Four represents the pinnacle of trainer skill. Preparing a diverse item bag with Full Restores and Revives is non-negotiable.
- Sidney (Dark): Uses Pokemon like Shiftry and Absol. Fighting, Bug, and Fairy-type moves (though rare in the original Ruby) are effective. A strong Blaziken or Heracross can sweep this team easily.
- Phoebe (Ghost): Features two Dusclops and two Banettes. Dark-type moves are the safest bet. Ghost-type moves are also effective but carry the risk of being hit super-effectively in return.
- Glacia (Ice): Uses Sealeo, Glalie, and Walrein. While they are Ice types, many are part Water. Electric moves are surprisingly effective here, as are Fighting and Rock moves. Avoid using Dragon or Grass types.
- Drake (Dragon): The most difficult of the four. His Salamence is incredibly powerful. An Ice-type move is almost mandatory to take down his Dragons quickly. If you don't have an Ice-type Pokemon, teaching Ice Beam to a Water-type is a common and effective tactic.
The Champion: Steven Steven specializes in Steel, Rock, and Ground types. His Metagross is one of the toughest Pokemon in the game due to its Psychic/Steel typing and massive Defense.
- Strategy: Use Fire or Ground moves against his Steel types (Skarmory, Aggron, Metagross). Water moves are effective against his Cradily and Armaldo. For Metagross, a high-speed Fire-type or a bulky Ground-type like Groudon can trade hits effectively. Earthquake is the premier move for this battle.
Post-Game and Completionist Tips
Once the credits roll, the game isn't over. Players receive a S.S. Ticket to board the ferry, unlocking the Battle Tower—a facility for consecutive high-level battles.
- The Regis: By solving the puzzle in the Sealed Chamber (requiring a Wailord and a Relicanth), the three Legendary Titans (Regirock, Regice, and Registeel) can be found in their respective ruins across Hoenn.
- Latios: After the Elite Four, a red bird-like Pokemon will begin roaming the Hoenn region. Catching Latios requires patience and a Pokemon with Mean Look or Block to prevent it from fleeing.
- Rayquaza: High above the clouds in the Sky Pillar (near Pacifidlog Town), the level 70 Dragon/Flying god Rayquaza awaits. Reaching it requires the Mach Bike and precise movement over cracked floor tiles.
Key HM and Item Locations for a Smooth Run
To avoid getting stuck, keep track of these essential items:
- HM01 (Cut): Rustboro City, house next to the Pokemon Center.
- HM02 (Fly): Received from your rival after the Weather Institute.
- HM03 (Surf): Received from Wally’s parents in Petalburg City after getting the 5th badge.
- HM04 (Strength): Found in Rusturf Tunnel after clearing the rocks.
- HM05 (Flash): Granite Cave, from a hiker near the entrance.
- HM06 (Rock Smash): Mauville City, house to the right of the Mart.
- HM07 (Waterfall): Cave of Origin, Sootopolis City.
- HM08 (Dive): Mossdeep City, from Steven’s house.
- EXP Share: Given by the Devon President in Rustboro after delivering the letter to Steven and the goods to Captain Stern.
Successfully completing Pokemon Ruby is a rewarding experience that emphasizes exploration and tactical planning. By selecting a balanced team and preparing for the specific challenges of each Gym Leader, any player can rise to the rank of Hoenn Champion.
