Red Dead Redemption Treasure Map Locations for Every Gold Bar
Finding every hidden stash in the frontier isn't just about the money; it’s about the thrill of the hunt. In the world of Red Dead Redemption, treasure maps are the most reliable path to wealth, turning a struggling outlaw into a financier of the camp. Most players know about the basic maps, but navigating the treacherous terrain to actually find those gold bars requires a keen eye for landmarks and a lot of patience. This breakdown covers the most lucrative maps you can find right now, focusing on precise locations and the steps needed to secure the loot.
The Logic of the Hunt
Treasure hunting in the series usually follows a linear progression. You find the first map—either by purchasing it from a shady character or looting it from a corpse—and it points you to a landmark. That landmark hides the second map, and so on, until the final location reveals a stack of gold bars.
Before heading out, ensure your horse is well-fed and you have enough stamina tonics. Many of these treasures are tucked away on cliff faces or inside dark caves where a single slip can be fatal.
Jack Hall Gang Treasure Map
This is often the first real treasure hunt players encounter, and it serves as a perfect introduction to how the system works. It’s accessible early in the story and provides a significant financial boost.
Finding the Starter Map
You can pick up the first map for the Jack Hall Gang treasure from a man named Máximo Cristóbal Valdespino. He’s usually hanging out on a ridge overlooking the Upper Montana River, just west of Flatneck Station. He’ll offer to sell it to you for $10. If you’re feeling less than generous, you can take it by force, though buying it is the cleaner route. If you miss this encounter, the map eventually becomes available at any Fence.
Location 1: Caliban's Seat
The first map depicts a very distinct rock formation known as Caliban's Seat, located south of Valentine. Ride to the top of the formation from the eastern side. Once you’re at the peak, look for a narrow path that leads down the cliff face. You’ll have to shimmy along a ledge, jump across a small gap, and mantle over a rock. Tucked into a small crevice in the white granite is the second map.
Location 2: Cotorra Springs
The second clue takes you north to Cotorra Springs in Ambarino. This area is famous for its steam vents and sulfur pools. Look for a circle of rock stacks. The treasure map is hidden inside the center stack. Be careful here, as this is also prime territory for a legendary wolf; keep your rifle ready.
Location 3: O'Creagh's Run
The final map leads to a beautiful lake in the Grizzlies East. In the center of the lake is a small, rocky island. You’ll need to swim your horse out there or swim yourself if your stamina is high enough. On the island, look under a loose rock on the grassy patch. You’ll find two gold bars, worth $1,000 at any Fence.
High Stakes Treasure Map
If the Jack Hall Gang was the warm-up, the High Stakes hunt is the real deal. It involves more verticality and a much higher risk of falling to your death.
Getting the Map
This map is held by an elderly treasure hunter who appears as a random encounter. You might find him between Strawberry and Valentine, often standing on a high rock looking through binoculars. He won't sell the map. You have to rob him or hogtie him to get it. If he escapes, he’ll respawn a couple of times before the map eventually ends up at a Fence.
Location 1: Cumberland Falls
The map points to Cumberland Falls, west of Valentine. You need to approach the falls from the western bank. Look for a fallen log that allows you to walk behind the rushing water. There’s a hidden ledge right behind the waterfall where the next map is stashed in a small hole.
Location 2: Barrow Lagoon
Now, head into the frozen peaks of the Grizzlies West. Barrow Lagoon is a frozen lake between Lake Isabella and Widow Rock. Look for a large log that bridges the gap between a small stone island and the shore. The map is hidden inside a knot-hole in the middle of that log bridge.
Location 3: The Cliffs of Bacchus Station
This is the most dangerous part. The final treasure is near Bacchus Station, specifically on the high cliffs overlooking the Dakota River. You’ll need to navigate a series of extremely narrow ledges on the cliff face. Look for a path that descends between two peaks. Follow it down, crouch under overhanging rocks, and perform a few precise jumps. At the end of the ledge, tucked into the rock, are three gold bars. This is a $1,500 payday.
The Poisonous Trail Treasure Map
This is widely considered the most mysterious and rewarding hunt. Unlike others, you can’t buy the first map; you have to find it in the wilderness.
Finding the Map at Cairn Lake
Travel to the far northwest, back to the snowy region of Colter. On the shore of Cairn Lake, there is a small, lonely cabin. Look under the bed inside the cabin to find a lockbox containing the first Poisonous Trail map.
Location 1: Face Rock
The map shows a rock that looks like a human face. You’ll find this in Lemoyne, specifically in Scarlett Meadows, north of Rhodes. From the "Face Rock" landmark, walk down the slope toward a cluster of dead trees. Inside a hollowed-out, withered tree trunk, you’ll find the second map.
Location 2: The Snake Geoglyph
Next, head to Roanoke Ridge in New Hanover. Just west of the Van Horn Trading Post, on a hill, there is a large geoglyph of a snake made of stones. At the "head" of the snake, there is a pile of rocks. Inspect the hole in the center to find the third map.
Location 3: Elysian Pool Hidden Cave
The final destination is the Elysian Pool, north of the snake geoglyph. There is a massive waterfall here. You need to walk directly through the waterfall into a dark cave system. Bring a lantern. This cave is a labyrinth. Follow the main path, but look for a steep drop-off. Slide down, then look for a small tunnel you have to crouch through. You’ll eventually reach a chamber with water and a series of stepping stones. Climb the ledge at the back to find four gold bars. This is the single biggest gold haul from a treasure map series.
Landmarks of Riches
This is a more obscure hunt that was added in later updates of the game, taking you on a tour of the most unusual sights in the world.
- Map 1: Found at the Obelisk, a stone monument on the far western edge of the map, west of Owanjila.
- Map 2: Points to the "Tiny Church" in the swamps of Lemoyne, north of Saint Denis. The map is in the bell tower.
- Map 3: Leads to the "Mysterious Hill Home" (the Hobbit-style house) north of Bacchus Station. It’s hidden in a window slit.
- Map 4: Points to the Bolger Glade battlefield. Look for a hollow tree in the middle of the trenches.
- Final Reward: The final location is on Mt. Shann. Look for a sundial at the peak. Under one of the rocks, you’ll find six gold bars. While smaller than the Poisonous Trail bars, the sheer volume makes this highly profitable.
The Elemental Trail
This treasure hunt is unique because it is only available after you have finished the main story and reached the Epilogue. It takes place in the desert region of New Austin.
- The Start: Head to the Sea of Coronado at the very western edge of the map. You’ll find a corpse hanging from a ridge near the water; loot it for the map.
- The Path: The trail leads you to a ruined chimney in Solomon’s Folly, then to a water tank at Benedict Point.
- The Reward: The final stash is located in a small grave in the valley of Tumbleweed. It yields one gold bar and a Crow Crow's Talon Trinket, which permanently slows the degradation of your weapons.
Torn Maps and the Legendary Revolver
If you aren't just looking for gold but want something unique for your holster, you need the Torn Maps. These are held by two Hermits who live on opposite ends of the world.
- The Hermit Man: He lives in a cabin at Manito Glade, north of Annesburg. He is extremely hostile and will shoot on sight with a Rare Shotgun. Defeat him and loot his nightstand for the first half.
- The Hermit Woman: She lives in a small shack at the far west of West Elizabeth, at the end of Little Creek River. She has several dogs that will attack. Loot her cabin for the second half.
Once combined, the map leads you to a cave near Rattlesnake Hollow in New Austin. Inside is Otis Miller’s Revolver, a gold-plated Schofield decorated with ivory grips—one of the most beautiful sidearms in the game.
Red Dead Redemption 1: The Classic Challenges
For those revisiting the original Red Dead Redemption, the treasure hunt functions as a "Treasure Hunter Challenge." It follows a similar logic but is more focused on the geography of New Austin and Nuevo Paraiso.
- Rank 1: Save a treasure hunter from bandits to get the first map.
- Key Locations: You’ll visit Hanging Rock (north of Armadillo), Del Lobo Rock (near Rio del Lobo), and the basement of the spooky Tumbleweed Mansion.
- Mexico Treasures: Once the map expands into Mexico, you'll be looking at Ojo del Diablo and Roca de Madera.
- The Reward: Completing all 10 ranks doesn't just give you gold bullion; it grants the "Treasure Hunter's Satchel," which doubles the amount of items you can carry, a massive quality-of-life upgrade for the late game.
Tips for Efficient Treasure Hunting
- The Fence is Your Friend: Gold bars are useless until sold. The Fences in Saint Denis, Rhodes, Emerald Ranch, and Van Horn are the only ones who will buy them. Prices don't fluctuate, so sell whenever you're nearby.
- Crouch for Safety: When navigating the ledges at High Stakes or Caliban's Seat, stay in a crouched position. It lowers your center of gravity and makes you less likely to stumble off the edge.
- The Journal: Arthur (or John) will often draw landmarks in his journal after you visit them. If you’re lost, check the journal entries; they often provide a better perspective than the crude map sketches.
- Time of Day: Always hunt during the day. Many of these crevices and holes are impossible to see at night, even with a lantern.
Treasure hunting is perhaps the most immersive way to experience the world of Red Dead Redemption. It forces you to look at the horizon not just as scenery, but as a puzzle to be solved. Whether you’re sliding down the granite slopes of the Grizzlies or wading through the swamps of Lemoyne, these maps ensure that there’s always a fortune waiting just over the next ridge.
