Sierra Pokemon GO: Best Counters and Lineup Strategy
Battling the Team GO Rocket leaders is a core challenge in Pokémon GO, and Sierra remains one of the most tactical opponents in the current rotation. Known for her balanced teams and aggressive use of shields, defeating her requires more than just high-CP Pokémon; it demands a precise understanding of type advantages and move timing. As of April 2026, Sierra has updated her roster, bringing in a mix of Poison, Bug, and Water types that can catch unprepared trainers off guard.
Locating Sierra with the Rocket Radar
Before engaging in battle, you must track Sierra down. This process begins with defeating six Team GO Rocket Grunts. Each victory yields a Mysterious Component. Once you collect six components, they automatically combine into a Rocket Radar.
With the radar equipped, you can see Leader hideouts at PokéStops. It is important to note that the leader appearing at a stop is randomized between Sierra, Cliff, and Arlo. If you are specifically looking for Sierra, you can skip other leaders and keep checking different PokéStops or wait for the next Team GO Rocket balloon, which appears every few hours. The radar is only consumed once a leader is successfully defeated, allowing you multiple attempts to find your preferred target.
Sierra's Current Lineup (April 2026)
Sierra’s team is structured in three phases. While her first Pokémon is always consistent, her second and third choices are pulled randomly from a pool of three candidates each. Preparation involves building a team that can handle these various permutations.
- Phase 1: Shadow Skorupi
- Phase 2: Shadow Milotic, Shadow Ninetales, or Shadow Ferrothorn
- Phase 3: Shadow Houndoom, Shadow Nidoqueen, or Shadow Drapion
Each of these Shadow Pokémon receives a significant attack boost, making them much more dangerous than their standard counterparts. However, they also suffer a slight defense penalty, which is something you can exploit with high-damage Fast Moves.
Phase 1: Overcoming Shadow Skorupi
Shadow Skorupi is a Poison and Bug-type Pokémon. While it serves as Sierra's lead, it is primarily there to bait your shields and chip away at your health. It is weak to Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Rock-type attacks.
Top Counters:
- Mewtwo: Using Psycho Cut and Psystrike allows for incredibly fast energy generation. Psystrike hits hard and can often force Sierra to use her first shield early in the match.
- Reshiram: With Fire Fang and Fusion Flare, Reshiram provides sheer raw power. If Sierra’s second Pokémon happens to be Ferrothorn, keeping Reshiram healthy becomes a major win condition.
- Primal Groudon: Mud Shot and Precipice Blades are excellent, though Earth Power is often sufficient for Skorupi. Groudon’s massive bulk ensures you leave this phase with plenty of energy for the next.
Strategy Tip: Since Skorupi isn't a massive damage threat, consider using a "fast-charging" lead to burn Sierra's shields immediately. Pokémon like Lucario with Power-Up Punch are excellent here, as they buff their own attack while forcing the AI to shield.
Phase 2: Handling the Random Variable
The second slot is where Sierra often breaks a trainer's momentum. You must be prepared for three very different elemental profiles.
Shadow Milotic (Water)
Milotic is notoriously bulky. As a Shadow Pokémon, its Waterfall or Dragon Tail fast moves can shred through attackers that don't resist them. It is weak to Electric and Grass.
- Kartana: The undisputed king of Grass-type damage. Razor Leaf and Leaf Blade will dismantle Milotic before it can reach a second Charged Move.
- Xurkitree: Thunder Shock and Discharge provide a rapid-fire Electric assault.
- Zekrom: Offers more bulk than Xurkitree and resists Milotic’s Water-type moves.
Shadow Ninetales (Fire)
Ninetales focuses on speed and consistent fire damage. It is weak to Water, Ground, and Rock.
- Primal Kyogre: Waterfall and Origin Pulse (or Surf) will make short work of Ninetales. Kyogre also provides a defensive cushion against Ninetales' Weather Ball.
- Rhyperior: Mud-Slap and Rock Wrecker are devastating. Rhyperior’s high HP allows it to tank several hits while farming energy.
- Tyranitar: Smack Down and Stone Edge provide a reliable Rock-type core. Just be wary if Ninetales is running a move like Solar Beam, though this is rare in the current leader AI sets.
Shadow Ferrothorn (Grass/Steel)
Ferrothorn is a defensive wall with a double weakness to Fire. If you don't have a Fire-type ready, this fight becomes a slog.
- Blaziken: Counter and Blast Burn (or Blaze Kick) is the optimal path. Fire-type moves deal 256% damage to Ferrothorn due to its typing.
- Heatran: Fire Spin and Magma Storm allow Heatran to resist almost everything Ferrothorn throws back while dealing massive super-effective damage.
- Charizard (Mega Y): If you are using your Mega slot, Charizard with Fire Spin and Blast Burn is the fastest way to delete Ferrothorn from the field.
Phase 3: The Final Showdown
Sierra’s final Pokémon are heavy hitters that can wipe your remaining team if your shields are gone.
Shadow Houndoom (Dark/Fire)
Houndoom is a glass cannon—high damage but relatively fragile. It is weak to Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water.
- Terrakion: Double Kick and Sacred Sword is one of the best combos in the game for taking down Dark types.
- Swampert: Mud Shot and Hydro Cannon provide the necessary speed to outpace Houndoom’s Snarl or Fire Fang.
- Conkeldurr: Counter and Dynamic Punch will consistently take chunks out of Houndoom’s health.
Shadow Nidoqueen (Poison/Ground)
Nidoqueen is a balanced threat that can use Poison Fang to lower your defense. She is weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water.
- Kyogre: Again, Primal or standard Kyogre dominates here with Water-type pressure.
- Mamoswine: Powder Snow and Avalanche. Mamoswine is particularly effective if you’ve already used it to clear a Flying-type earlier in the battle (though Flying isn't in Sierra's current slot 2).
- Mewtwo: If your Mewtwo from the first phase is still alive, a Psystrike will nearly one-shot Nidoqueen.
Shadow Drapion (Poison/Dark)
Drapion is arguably the toughest of the three because it only has one weakness: Ground.
- Garchomp: Mud Shot and Earth Power (or Earthquake). Garchomp resists Drapion’s Electric or Poison moves, making it the safest counter.
- Excadrill: Mud-Slap and Scorching Sands. Excadrill’s Steel typing gives it a huge advantage in resistances, though it must be wary of Drapion’s potential Ground-type moves.
- Landorus (Therian): Mud Shot and Sandsear Storm offer high damage and a guaranteed attack debuff on Drapion, which helps your team survive longer.
Advanced Battle Mechanics and Tactics
To defeat Sierra consistently, you should utilize the underlying mechanics of Team GO Rocket encounters. These aren't like standard trainer battles; the AI follows specific patterns.
The "Switch Stun"
Whenever a Pokémon is swapped or a Charged Move is used (by either you or the AI), the Team GO Rocket leader’s Pokémon will stop attacking for approximately two seconds (or two Fast Move turns). You can exploit this by starting the battle with your second Pokémon and immediately switching to your intended lead. This gives you several "free" hits and a head start on energy generation.
Shield Baiting
Sierra will always use her two shields on the first two Charged Moves you throw. Don't waste your most powerful, energy-intensive moves (like Earthquake or Origin Pulse) early on. Use low-energy moves like Blaze Kick, Power-Up Punch, or Bone Club to force her to use her shields. Once her shields are depleted, your heavier attacks will land for full damage.
Energy Farming
If you find yourself in a matchup where you heavily resist Sierra’s Fast Moves (e.g., using a Steel-type against her Poison moves), don't use your Charged Move immediately. Instead, keep using Fast Moves to build up a full bar of energy. This allows you to "bank" moves for her next Pokémon, which might be a much bigger threat.
Recommended "Universal" Teams
If you want a team that can handle almost any combination Sierra throws at you without needing to adjust every time, try these setups:
Team 1: The Powerhouse (Reliable and Fast)
- Lucario: (Counter + Power-Up Punch/Aura Sphere) - Used for shield baiting and handling Houndoom.
- Primal Kyogre: (Waterfall + Surf/Origin Pulse) - Handles Ninetales, Nidoqueen, and provides general bulk.
- Garchomp: (Mud Shot + Earth Power) - Specifically for Drapion and general cleanup.
Team 2: The Budget/Non-Legendary Team
- Swampert: (Mud Shot + Hydro Cannon) - High speed, great for shields and Ninetales/Nidoqueen.
- Blaziken: (Counter + Blaze Kick/Blast Burn) - Essential for Ferrothorn and Skorupi.
- Mamoswine: (Mud-Slap + Avalanche/High Horsepower) - Covers Drapion and adds Ice coverage.
Rewards for Defeating Sierra
Victory against Sierra is more than just a notch on your belt. It is currently one of the few ways to obtain specific Shadow Pokémon that have high competitive value in the Great and Ultra Leagues.
Upon defeat, you will be granted an encounter with the Pokémon from her first slot—currently Shadow Skorupi. There is a verified chance (approximately 1 in 64) that this Pokémon will be Shiny. Shiny Shadow Pokémon are among the rarest collectibles in the game.
Additionally, you will receive two reward bundles which can include:
- 1,000 Stardust
- Revives and Max Revives
- Hyper Potions and Max Potions
- Strange Eggs (12km Eggs) – only if you have an open egg slot and Pokémon storage space.
- Evolution items like Unova Stones or Sinnoh Stones (though these are less common).
Final Checklist for Success
Before you tap that "Battle" button, run through this final checklist to ensure you don't waste a Radar:
- Check Your Movesets: Ensure your counters aren't running "off-type" moves. A Kyogre with Thunder isn't going to help much against a Ground-type Nidoqueen.
- CP Levels: While CP isn't everything, having your Pokémon at least at level 35 (around 3000+ CP for most meta picks) is recommended for Leader battles.
- Storage Space: Make sure you have space for the Shadow Pokémon encounter and the 12km Egg.
- Health Check: Ensure your team is at full HP. Rocket Leaders are significantly stronger than Grunts and will punish a team starting at 50% health.
Sierra is a formidable opponent, but her reliance on predictable AI patterns makes her beatable for any trainer with a strategic mindset. By focusing on shield baiting and maintaining type advantage, you can consistently secure the win and work toward that elusive Shiny Shadow Skorupi.
