Solving the Coin Puzzle Silent Hill 2 and Finding Every Location
The coin cabinet in Wood Side Apartments remains one of the most iconic roadblocks in the Silent Hill 2 remake. Unlike some puzzles that require simple observation, this one demands a scavenger hunt across multiple floors followed by a series of riddles that change based on your chosen difficulty. This breakdown covers where to find every coin and how to arrange them to unlock the path forward to the Blue Creek Apartments.
Locating the three coins in Wood Side Apartments
You cannot solve the coin puzzle silent hill 2 until you have all three pieces: the Man coin, the Woman coin, and the Snake coin. These are scattered throughout the building, often locked behind other sub-puzzles.
The Man Coin
The Man coin is found inside a safe in Room 206. Reaching this room requires a specific sequence starting in Room 208. First, you need to find the Golden Apple Handle in Room 108. Take this handle to Room 208 and use it on the ornate cabinet to reveal a peephole. After observing the room beyond, you can push the cabinet aside to enter Room 206.
Inside Room 206, the walls are covered in symbols and numbers. The safe combination depends on your puzzle difficulty:
- Light: 15 Right, 11 Left, 13 Right.
- Normal: 13 Right, 7 Left, 11 Right.
- Hard: 13 Right, 7 Left, 11 Right (The logic involves more complex math on the walls, but the input remains consistent with the standard solution in current patches).
Open the safe to claim the Man coin and the key to the room's exit.
The Woman Coin
The Woman coin is initially visible but unreachable, stuck in a trash chute on the second floor (2F). To dislodge it, you must first progress to the third floor (3F) by obtaining the 2F small staircase key.
Once on the third floor, navigate to the laundry room or the construction area to find a hole you can crawl through into the trash chute room. Pick up the Canned Juice located nearby. Use the Canned Juice on the trash chute to force the clog down. Now, head back down to the first floor (1F) and go outside to the courtyard near the dumpsters. You will find the Woman coin on the ground among the trash.
The Snake Coin
The Snake coin is located in the pool area, which is accessible after meeting Eddie for the first time in Room 116. After the cutscene with Eddie, climb through the window into the courtyard pool. This area is heavily guarded by Lying Figures. You don't need to kill them all; head straight for the baby stroller (or pram) sitting in the middle of the empty pool. Interact with the stroller to pick up the Snake coin. Be prepared to dodge enemies as you exit back toward the coin cabinet.
The Coin Cabinet mechanics
Returning to the 1F office area, you will find the coin cabinet. Each coin in the remake is double-sided. To solve the riddles, you must not only place them in the correct slots but also flip them to the correct face.
- Man Coin flips to reveal a Sword.
- Woman Coin flips to reveal a Gravestone.
- Snake Coin flips to reveal a Flower.
There are four distinct stages to the puzzle. After you correctly place the coins for one verse of the poem, the poem will change, requiring you to move or flip the coins again.
Normal difficulty puzzle solution
On Normal difficulty, the poems focus on the relationship between the characters and the "wind" or "shadows."
Stage 1: The Initial Placement
- Poem Clue: The man is at one end, the woman in the middle, and the flower at the other end.
- Solution: Place the Man coin in the far-left slot, the Woman coin in the center slot, and the Flower (back of the Snake coin) in the far-right slot. Leave the other slots empty.
Stage 2: The Approaching Man
- Poem Clue: The man approaches with a blade, the woman flees toward the flower.
- Solution: Flip the Man coin to the Sword side and move it to the second slot from the left. Move the Woman coin to the fourth slot (second from the right). Keep the Flower in the far-right slot.
Stage 3: The Aftermath
- Poem Clue: Where a flower grew, a venomous glee; where a maiden was, a stone now exists.
- Solution: Flip the Flower back to the Snake side. Flip the Woman coin to the Gravestone side. Move the Sword back to the Man side and place it in the center slot. The final arrangement: Slot 3 (Man), Slot 4 (Gravestone), Slot 5 (Snake).
Stage 4: The Blame
- Poem Clue: Who carries the blame for what fate had in store?
- Solution: This stage requires you to place a single coin in the top slot. You can choose any of the three. Note that this choice is often tied to your psychological profile for the game's endings.
Hard difficulty puzzle solution
The Hard difficulty riddles are significantly more abstract, referencing the "North Star" and the "Creature of Hades."
Stage 1
- Solution: Place the Man in the far-left slot, the Gravestone (Woman) in the fourth slot, and the Snake in the far-right slot.
Stage 2
- Solution: Flip the Man to the Gravestone and place it in the far-left slot. Place the Sword (Man) in the second slot, and the Flower (Snake) in the third slot.
Stage 3
- Solution: Place the Man in the second slot, the Woman in the third slot, and the Snake in the far-right slot.
Stage 4
- Solution: Much like Normal difficulty, choose who carries the blame. Most players on Hard difficulty select the Snake to represent the corruption of the soul, but the game accepts any coin to progress.
Light difficulty puzzle solution
Light difficulty is straightforward and requires minimal movement.
- Stage 1: Man (Slot 1), Woman (Slot 3), Flower (Slot 5).
- Stage 2: Sword (Slot 1), Woman (Slot 3), Snake (Slot 5).
- Stage 3: Snake (Slot 1), Gravestone (Slot 3), Man (Slot 5).
- Stage 4: Choose any coin for the top slot.
The Final Choice: Who carries the blame?
In the remake, the final step of the coin puzzle silent hill 2 isn't just about logic; it’s about narrative intent. While inserting any coin will unlock the drawer and grant you the Apartment 201 Key, your choice contributes to the hidden point system that determines whether you get the Leave, In Water, or Maria ending.
- The Snake: Choosing the Snake often aligns with the "Leave" ending path, as it externalizes the guilt as a separate, deceptive force.
- The Woman: Choosing the Woman (or the Gravestone) can lean toward the "Maria" ending, focusing on the tragedy and memory of Mary.
- The Man: Choosing the Man (or the Sword) is a strong indicator for the "In Water" ending, as it shows James accepting full, crushing responsibility for his actions.
Solving the classic 2001 coin puzzle
If you are playing the original Silent Hill 2 (or the HD Collection), the coin puzzle is found in Room 105 of the Blue Creek Apartments, not Wood Side. The coins are different: Old Man, Prisoner, and Snake.
Original Normal Difficulty
- Riddle: "Three bright coins in five holes be... the old one beside the serpent sits not. 'Tis to the prisoner's left that he doth rot."
- Solution: [Empty] - [Old Man] - [Prisoner] - [Empty] - [Snake].
Original Hard Difficulty
- Riddle: "First lies the seat of he who is peerless... the birth of the sun is the start of the story."
- Solution: [Empty] - [Old Man] - [Empty] - [Snake] - [Prisoner].
In the original game, the solution is static and does not have the multiple stages found in the remake. Once the coins are placed correctly, the desk opens immediately, providing the Lyne House Key.
Troubleshooting common issues
If the cabinet doesn't open even though you think you have the right solution, check the following:
- Face Up: Ensure the correct side of the coin is facing you. A "Man" is not a "Sword" in the eyes of the puzzle logic.
- Difficulty Mismatch: Double-check your gameplay settings. If you chose "Hard" puzzle difficulty but are using the "Normal" solution, the cabinet will remain locked.
- Interaction: In the remake, you must manually trigger the next verse of the poem by interacting with the cabinet after placing the coins for the previous stage.
Completing the coin puzzle silent hill 2 marks the end of the Wood Side Apartments segment. Once you have the Room 201 key, you can enter the room where the legendary encounter with Pyramid Head occurs shortly after, signaling a shift into the more surreal and dangerous territory of the Blue Creek Apartments.
