Solving the Volskygge Puzzle Order in Skyrim
Exploring the northwestern reaches of Skyrim often leads seasoned adventurers to the shadowed arches of Volskygge. Located high in the mountains of Haafingar, west of Solitude and southeast of Pine Frost Tower, this ancient Nordic ruin is more than just a burial mound for the dead. It is a multi-layered complex filled with bandits, Draugr, and a signature environmental logic puzzle that has stumped many players since the game's release. Whether you are hunting for the powerful Dragon Priest mask at the summit or simply clearing out the bandit nest, mastering the Volskygge puzzle is the only way to progress into the deeper sanctums of the ruin.
The location and initial approach
Volskygge is situated in a harsh, snowy environment that demands preparation. As you approach the exterior, you will notice a significant bandit presence. The exterior structure features a tiered courtyard with several sentries. It is advisable to deal with the archers on the upper walkways before entering the main iron door. For those looking for early loot, a small side burial chamber exists near the entrance, though it is guarded by a swinging pressure plate trap and a leveled Draugr.
Once inside the main zone, the atmosphere shifts from the cold mountain air to the claustrophobic, candle-lit corridors of ancient Nord architecture. The first major room is a banquet hall occupied by bandits who have made the ruin their temporary home. After clearing the initial resistance and navigating past a series of dart traps and swinging blades, you will eventually reach a room that stands as a gatekeeper to the rest of the dungeon. This is the puzzle chamber.
Deciphering the Four Totems of Volskygge
In the center of the puzzle room, a locked iron gate blocks the northern exit. Surrounding a central pillar are four alcoves, each containing a lever and a stone plaque depicting an animal: a Snake, a Bear, a Fox, and a Wolf. On a pedestal directly in front of the gate lies a book titled The Four Totems of Volskygge. This book provides the essential clues needed to unlock the path forward.
The text of the riddle reads as follows:
"The first fears all, the second fears none. The third eats what it can, preferably number one. The fourth fears the second, but only when alone. All must be activated in order, if you wish to go home."
To solve this without triggering the Draugr ambush that follows a mistake, one must apply the logic of the Skyrim wilderness to these lines.
1. The first fears all: The Snake
In the hierarchy of the four animals presented, the snake is the most vulnerable and reactive. Within the lore of these puzzles, the snake represents a creature that strikes out of fear and is often preyed upon by the others. Therefore, the Snake is the first totem to activate.
2. The second fears none: The Bear
The bear is the apex predator of the Skyrim wilds. It is a symbol of raw power and fearlessness. While a pack of wolves might challenge it, a single bear has no natural enemies it truly "fears." Thus, the Bear is the second totem.
3. The third eats what it can, preferably number one: The Fox
Foxes are scavengers and opportunists. The riddle specifies that the third animal prefers to eat "number one" (the snake). In nature, foxes are known to hunt small reptiles. This placement makes the Fox the third totem in the sequence.
4. The fourth fears the second, but only when alone: The Wolf
Wolves are pack hunters. A single wolf is significantly weaker than a bear and will avoid a confrontation at all costs. However, the riddle notes that it only fears the second (the bear) "when alone," implying that in a pack, its behavior changes. This identifies the Wolf as the final totem.
The correct puzzle sequence
To open the gate and proceed, you must pull the levers in this specific order:
- Snake
- Bear
- Fox
- Wolf
As you pull each lever in the correct order, a blue flame will ignite atop the central brazier or pillar, signaling your success. If you pull an incorrect lever, the sequence resets, and one of the four sarcophagi in the room will burst open, releasing a leveled Draugr. While this can be a good way to farm extra experience and loot, it can quickly become overwhelming for lower-level characters. Once the fourth lever is pulled correctly, the iron gate will lift, granting access to the Volskygge Passages.
Navigating the Volskygge Passages
Solving the puzzle is only the midpoint of the journey. The Volskygge Passages transition the environment from a bandit-inhabited ruin to a traditional Draugr crypt. This area is heavily trapped. You will encounter pressure plates that trigger pendulum axes and floor grates that lead to spiked pits.
One particular room features a trap door in the center. If you fall through, you will land in a pit surrounded by Draugr. While you can use the wooden scaffolding to climb back up, it is safer to navigate the perimeter. In the southern section of the passages, the architecture gives way to natural caverns. Here, the enemies shift from undead to Frostbite Spiders. These tunnels are narrow and filled with webbing that must be cut away. High-level players should watch for the Giant Frostbite Spiders that often drop from the ceiling in the larger cavern chambers.
Eventually, the cave system leads back into worked stone. The final challenge of the passages involves a confrontation with a Draugr Death Overlord (depending on your level) seated on a throne. This enemy often guards high-quality loot chests and the door leading to the exterior summit: Volskygge Peak.
The Battle at Volskygge Peak
Emerging onto Volskygge Peak provides a breathtaking view of the Haafingar coastline, but the peace is short-lived. As you approach the Word Wall at the top of the stairs, a sarcophagus will explode, and the Dragon Priest Volsung will emerge.
Volsung is a formidable opponent who specializes in frost magic. He will frequently use Frost Cloak and high-level Ice Storm spells that can drain your stamina and slow your movement. Because the combat takes place on a narrow mountain peak, positioning is critical. It is easy to be blown off the edge by a well-placed shout or spell.
Combat Tactics for Volsung
- Resistance: Ensure you have Frost Resistance potions or enchanted gear. Since Volsung hovers, melee characters may find it difficult to land consistent hits. Using the Unrelenting Force shout can stumble him, providing a window for power attacks.
- Ranged Advantage: Archers and mages have an easier time if they use the stone pillars and the Word Wall for cover. Fire-based spells and enchantments are particularly effective against his undead nature.
- Summons: If you have the Conjuration skill, summoning a Flame Atronach or a Dremora Lord can distract Volsung, allowing you to flank him.
The Reward: Volsung Mask and Whirlwind Sprint
Defeating Volsung yields one of the eight core Dragon Priest masks of the base game. The Volsung Mask is widely considered one of the most versatile pieces of headgear in Skyrim. Its enchantments are highly beneficial for almost any character build:
- Prices are 20% better: This makes it the premier mask for trading with merchants.
- Carry weight increased by 20 points: Essential for clearing out the rest of the dungeon's loot.
- Can breathe underwater: Useful for exploring the shipwrecks along the northern coast near Solitude.
In addition to the mask, the Word Wall behind Volsung's sarcophagus contains a word for the Whirlwind Sprint dragon shout. If this is your first time discovering the shout, you will learn the word Kest (Tempest). If you have already progressed through the Greybeards' training, you may learn Nah (Fury).
Final Loot and Secrets
Before leaving the peak, check the boss chest located near the Word Wall. Volskygge is known to house high-tier loot, often including enchanted weapons and rare gems. Furthermore, for players working on the "Alteration Ritual Spell" quest, the chest here is a potential location for Kahvozein's Fang, a unique dagger required to harvest dragon heartscales.
Volskygge represents a classic Skyrim dungeon experience: a mix of environmental storytelling, logical puzzle-solving, and high-stakes combat. By following the Snake-Bear-Fox-Wolf sequence and preparing for the frost-based onslaught of the Dragon Priest, you can claim one of the most powerful artifacts in the game and master the heights of Haafingar.
