Stardew Legendary Fish: Locations, Gear, and Expert Catching Tips
Fishing in Stardew Valley represents one of the most complex and rewarding skill trees in the game. While common river and ocean fish provide a steady income, the five legendary fish—the Legend, Crimsonfish, Angler, Glacierfish, and Mutant Carp—serve as the ultimate test of a player's mastery. These creatures are characterized by their unique movement patterns, high difficulty ratings, and the orange crown icon appearing during the fishing mini-game. Catching them requires more than just a basic rod; it demands strategic planning involving seasons, weather, specific tile locations, and high-tier buffs.
The Original Five Legendary Fish
The original five legendary fish are unique entities that can only be caught once per save file. Each is tied to a specific season and location, with the exception of the Mutant Carp, which resides in the sewers year-round.
The Legend
- Season: Spring
- Weather: Rain
- Location: The Mountain Lake
- Requirement: Fishing Level 10 (natural or buffed)
- Difficulty: 110 (Mixed)
Often cited as the most difficult fish in the game, the Legend only appears in the deep waters of the mountain lake near the sunken log. To successfully hook it, players must cast their line as far as possible from the shore to reach the high-quality fishing zones. The Legend's movement is erratic, frequently jumping across the progress bar, making the Trap Bobber an essential attachment. Its high selling price—up to 15,000g with the Angler profession and Iridium quality—makes it the most valuable single item obtainable through fishing.
The Crimsonfish
- Season: Summer
- Weather: Any
- Location: The Beach (East Pier)
- Requirement: Fishing Level 5
- Difficulty: 95 (Mixed)
The Crimsonfish inhabits the warm summer waters of the ocean. Accessing its location requires repairing the small bridge on the beach with 300 wood. Standing on the far eastern end of the pier and casting southward into the deep blue water is the most effective method. While less aggressive than the Legend, its high speed requires quick reactions.
The Angler
- Season: Fall
- Weather: Any
- Location: Pelican Town (North Bridge)
- Requirement: Fishing Level 3
- Difficulty: 85 (Smooth)
Technically the easiest of the legends, the Angler can be found north of JojaMart (or the Movie Theater) on the wooden plank bridge. By casting northward from the center of the bridge, players can hook this bioluminescent predator. Its "Smooth" movement pattern means it doesn't jerk as much as others, making it an excellent practice target for early-game players aiming for their first legendary catch.
The Glacierfish
- Season: Winter
- Weather: Any
- Location: Cindersap Forest (Arrowhead Island)
- Requirement: Fishing Level 6
- Difficulty: 100 (Mixed)
Found at the southern tip of Arrowhead Island in the Cindersap Forest, the Glacierfish thrives in the frigid winter waters. The specific tile to aim for is the southernmost point where the river meets the deeper pond area. Its difficulty is second only to the Legend, often requiring a combination of high-level food and specialized tackle to maintain the progress bar.
The Mutant Carp
- Season: All Seasons
- Weather: Any
- Location: The Sewers
- Requirement: Access to the Sewers
- Difficulty: 80 (Sinker)
Unlocking the Mutant Carp requires the Rusty Key, obtained after donating 60 items to the Museum. Once inside the sewers, players can fish in the green sludge. The Mutant Carp has a "Sinker" pattern, meaning it tends to drop rapidly toward the bottom of the mini-game bar. While it lacks seasonal restrictions, it remains a one-time catch.
Essential Gear for Legendary Success
Attempting to catch legendary fish with a fiberglass or bamboo rod is statistically unlikely to succeed. High-end equipment is necessary to mitigate the extreme movement speeds of these fish.
The Iridium and Advanced Iridium Rods
The Iridium Rod is the baseline requirement because it allows the use of both bait and tackle. However, with the 1.6 update, the Advanced Iridium Rod has become the gold standard. This rod allows for two tackle attachments simultaneously. Combining two Trap Bobbers or a Trap Bobber with a Cork Bobber provides a massive advantage, either slowing the fish's escape rate significantly or increasing the size of the fishing bar.
Recommended Tackle (Bobbers)
- Trap Bobber: This is the single most important tool. It reduces the rate at which the "catch meter" decreases when the fish is outside the green bar. Against the Legend or Glacierfish, this provides the necessary margin of error.
- Cork Bobber: Increases the size of your fishing bar. This is particularly useful when combined with a high fishing level (13+ via buffs).
- Sonar Bobber: Useful for players who do not want to waste bait or time on common fish. It identifies the fish before it is caught, allowing players to let non-legendary fish go to save tackle durability.
Bait Selection
- Wild Bait: Provides a chance to catch two fish at once. While you cannot catch two legendary fish at once (as they are unique), it speeds up the process of clearing common fish from the pool.
- Deluxe Bait: Increases the size of the fishing bar slightly and reduces the time for a bite, making it superior to standard bait for high-stakes encounters.
Maximizing Fishing Level through Buffs
A player's base fishing level caps at 10, but the size of the fishing bar continues to increase with levels gained through food consumption. Reaching level 13, 14, or even 15 is highly recommended for the Legend.
- Seafoam Pudding: Provides a +4 Fishing buff. This is the strongest buff in the game and is crafted using Flounder, Midnight Carp, and Squid Ink. Using gold-quality Seafoam Pudding (made with Qi Seasoning) can push the buff to +5.
- Dish O' The Sea: A more accessible +3 Fishing buff, crafted with two Sardines and Hash Browns. This is often sufficient for the Angler or Crimsonfish.
- Lobster Bisque: Offers a +3 Fishing buff and has a long duration, making it ideal for day-long fishing sessions in the Cindersap Forest.
Advanced Techniques: The "Perfect" Catch and Tile Logic
Understanding Fishing Zones
The game calculates fish quality and type based on the "Zone" of the bobber. Zone 5 is the highest, usually achieved by casting at maximum strength into water that is at least 5 tiles away from any land in all directions. Legendary fish often have a higher hook rate in these deep-water tiles. For example, when fishing for the Legend, the bobber should land as close to the sunken log as possible, as that area is coded for high-tier spawns.
Managing the Mini-Game Bar
Legendary fish often use the "Dart" or "Mixed" movement types. The key to winning is not to chase the fish frantically. Instead, try to keep the fish near the upper third of your green bar. This allows you to react more effectively to both sudden drops and sudden climbs. If a fish is rapidly bouncing at the bottom, avoid letting your bar hit the bottom of the screen, as the bounce can cause you to lose control. Equipping a Lead Bobber can prevent this bounce if you find the bottom-dwelling fish particularly troublesome.
The Extended Family: Legendary Fish II
Once players gain access to Qi’s Walnut Room on Ginger Island, they may encounter the "Extended Family" quest. This quest requires catching the "successors" to the original legendary fish within a three-day time limit. These fish appear in the same locations as the originals but can be caught multiple times during the quest window.
- Son of Crimsonfish: Found at the East Pier during the quest.
- Ms. Angler: Found at the Pelican Town bridge.
- Legend II: Found at the Mountain Lake.
- Radioactive Carp: Found in the Sewers.
- Glacierfish Jr.: Found at Arrowhead Island.
These fish are equally difficult to the originals but provide a way to obtain legendary-tier fish for display in fish tanks without losing the original one-time catches. They also count toward the "Master Angler" achievement if it has not been completed yet.
Practical Uses and Display
Because legendary fish (the original ones) are non-renewable, selling them is often discouraged for collectors. Instead, many players choose to display them in Deluxe Fish Tanks. A large tank can house several legendary fish, allowing you to create a trophy room of your achievements.
If you do choose to sell them, ensure you have the Angler Profession (which increases fish value by 50%) and that you achieve an Iridium Quality catch. To get an Iridium Legendary fish, you must have a perfect catch (not letting the fish leave the bar once) on a gold-quality hook, or use a Quality Bobber.
Summary of Requirements for 100% Completion
For players aiming for the "Master Angler" achievement, catching all five original legendary fish is mandatory. It is advisable to tackle them in the following order based on difficulty and progression:
- Year 1 Fall: The Angler (Lowest difficulty, easy location).
- Year 1 Winter: The Glacierfish (High difficulty, but good practice for the Legend).
- Year 2 Spring: The Legend (Requires max level and rain; the ultimate goal).
- Year 2 Summer: The Crimsonfish (Mid-high difficulty).
- Anytime: The Mutant Carp (Once the Sewers are unlocked).
By ensuring you have at least Level 10 fishing, a stack of Seafoam Pudding, and an Iridium Rod equipped with Trap Bobbers, the legendary fish of Stardew Valley change from impossible obstacles to the crowning jewels of your collection. Focus on the timing of your clicks—short, rhythmic taps are almost always better than long holds—to maintain the precise control needed for the king of all fish.
