Vahlok's Tomb Puzzle: A Full Walkthrough for the Lost Legacy Quest
Vahlok's Tomb stands as one of the most mechanically diverse dungeons in the Solstheim expansion of Skyrim. Unlike many standard Nordic ruins that rely on simple lever pulls, this location requires a combination of lateral thinking, precise movement, and an understanding of specific environmental cues. To access the tomb and begin solving the Vahlok's Tomb puzzle, you must first complete the quest "A New Source of Stalhrim." Once that is settled, the historian Tharstan in Skaal Village will approach you, initiating the "Lost Legacy" quest.
This tomb is the final resting place of Vahlok the Jailor, a legendary Dragon Priest who stayed behind to guard against the return of Miraak. The puzzles within are designed to test the worthiness of those who enter, and navigating them requires more than just high combat stats.
The Sacrifice Puzzle: Opening the Side Gates
Upon entering the main chamber with Tharstan, you are immediately confronted with a massive fire pit in the center of the room and a central pedestal with a handle. This is the first significant hurdle. Tharstan will translate the nearby tablet: "A sacrifice will bring you closer to that which you seek."
Observing the room reveals several Draugr corpses scattered around the central grate. The solution here is physical rather than symbolic. You must drag one of the nearby dead Draugr onto the metal grate in the center of the fire pit. On a PC, this is done by holding the 'E' key while looking at the corpse; on consoles, it is usually the 'A' or 'Cross' button. Once the body is positioned directly on top of the grate, pull the handle on the pedestal. The grate will open, the body will fall into the flames, and the fire will flare up, unlocking the gates to the north and south wings of the tomb.
It is common for the physics engine to be slightly temperamental here. If the Draugr slides off the grate before it opens, the puzzle will not trigger. Ensure the body is centered. Once successful, you can choose to explore either the south or north wing first; both must be completed to progress to the lower levels.
The South Wing: The Pillar of Three Weapons
Heading through the south (left) gate leads to a series of corridors filled with standard Draugr. Eventually, you will reach a room with a large monolith in the center and three pedestals surrounding it. The tablet here reads: "All men must die, often by their own means."
This puzzle focuses on the three core archetypes of combat in Skyrim: magic, melee, and archery. If you look closely at the central monolith, you will notice carvings representing different weapons on each side, facing specific pedestals. To solve this, you must hit each pedestal with the corresponding type of attack.
- The Staff/Magic Pedestal: This pillar is typically glowing with a blue hue. You must hit it with a spell or a staff attack. Firebolt or Flames usually works perfectly.
- The Sword/Melee Pedestal: This pillar glows red. You need to strike it with a physical melee weapon like a sword, axe, or mace.
- The Bow/Archery Pedestal: This pillar glows green. You must hit it with an arrow or a bolt from a distance.
When a pedestal is struck with the correct damage type, it will lock into place and glow brightly. Once all three are activated, the gate leading further into the wing will open. This path leads to a Draugr Deathlord carrying the Left Half of the Amethyst Claw and a Word Wall containing the first word of the "Battle Fury" shout.
The North Wing: The Spiral Pressure Plate Path
The north (right) wing contains a puzzle that challenges your movement and spatial awareness. The tablet at the entrance of the puzzle room states: "Continue along the path, don't tread where you've been."
In front of you is a 3x3 grid of square pressure plates. If you step on a plate and then step off, or if you step on a plate that has already been activated, the puzzle resets, often triggering a flame trap. The goal is to touch every single plate in a single continuous path without backtracking.
To solve the Vahlok's Tomb puzzle here, stand at the edge of the grid. Start at one of the corner plates on the outer edge. The most reliable method is to follow a spiral pattern. Walk along the three plates on the outer edge, turn, walk along the next outer edge, and continue spiraling inward until you land on the center plate. For example, if you start at the bottom-left corner, go up three squares, right three squares, down two squares, left one square, and finally up into the center. Once the center plate is depressed after all others have been activated, the gate opens.
Behind this gate, you will find another Draugr Deathlord holding the Right Half of the Amethyst Claw and the second Word of Power for the "Battle Fury" shout.
The Central Descent and the Disappearing Platforms
With both halves of the Amethyst Claw in your possession, return to the main chamber. Approach the central cage. There are two keyholes on the pillars where you must insert both halves of the claw. This opens the floor grate, leading down to a massive subterranean cavern.
Tharstan will guide you to a handle. The inscription says: "Stay your course. To idle is to die." This is a timed platforming challenge. When you pull the handle, magical blue platforms will manifest over the water. These platforms do not last long; they will vanish in the sequence they appeared.
Speed is essential here. Do not stop to look around. Follow the blue path immediately as it forms. If you fall into the water below, you aren't dead, but you will have to contend with Corrupted Shades—aggressive ghosts that can be difficult to fight in the dark water. If you fall, find the wooden ramps at the edges of the cavern to climb back up and try again.
There are three separate segments of these magical bridges. The final segment is the longest and requires you to sprint. Having the "Whirlwind Sprint" shout equipped can be a helpful safety measure, though it is not strictly necessary if you maintain a steady running pace.
The Amethyst Claw Door Combination
After crossing the magical bridges, you will arrive at a traditional Nordic puzzle door. Unlike other doors where the combination is found on the palm of the claw, the Amethyst Claw is split, and the symbols are not visible on the items themselves. Instead, you must rely on Tharstan’s translations of the nearby carvings to determine the order of the rings.
Tharstan provides three distinct hints:
- "The first one has to do with a breeze, or maybe it's wind." This refers to the Hawk (or Eagle), representing the sky.
- "The second one mentions the night sky, and the moon." This is the Wolf, which is often associated with the night in Nordic lore.
- "The third has something to do with fire. It also seems to mention scales." This clearly indicates the Dragon.
Set the rings from top to bottom as: Hawk, Wolf, Dragon. Insert the Amethyst Claw into the keyhole, and the heavy stone door will descend, revealing the final burial chamber of Vahlok the Jailor.
Defeating Vahlok the Jailor
The final encounter is a high-intensity boss fight against Vahlok himself. As you enter the chamber, be wary of the floor. Almost the entire floor is a series of pressure plates connected to powerful flamethrower traps. Stepping on these while fighting a Dragon Priest is a recipe for a quick death.
Vahlok uses powerful fire magic, including a Flame Cloak and explosive fireballs. He will also summon Flame Atronachs to distract you. Because of the heavy fire theme of this encounter, drinking a Potion of Fire Resistance or wearing enchanted gear is highly recommended.
For melee players, the best strategy is to corner Vahlok near his sarcophagus to avoid running over the floor traps. For archers and mages, stay near the entrance of the room where the floor is safe, and use the pillars for cover against his projectiles. Tharstan is present during this fight, but as a non-combatant scholar, he will mostly stay out of the way and cannot be relied upon for damage.
Once Vahlok is defeated, you can loot his remains. Unlike the other eight high-ranking Dragon Priests of Skyrim or the other acolytes on Solstheim, Vahlok does not drop a mask. This is lore-accurate, as he was the one who defeated Miraak and was granted the title of "Jailor" rather than a traditional mask of power. However, he does guard the final Word of Power for "Battle Fury."
The Reward: Battle Fury Shout
Completing the Vahlok's Tomb puzzle rewards you with all three words of the "Battle Fury" shout: Grah, Dun, Hiiv. This shout is unique because it does not buff the player directly. Instead, it acts like the "Elemental Fury" shout but for your allies and followers.
When shouted, it greatly increases the attack speed of all nearby companions for a duration. For players who travel with a full party (such as a follower and a conjured thrall), this is one of the most powerful utility shouts in the game. It allows your allies to output massive physical damage, making it particularly effective if your follower is equipped with heavy-hitting two-handed weapons.
Tharstan will also reward you with a significant amount of gold (usually 1,000 septims) for your protection and assistance in his archaeological discovery. Be sure to check the chests behind the Word Wall before leaving, as they often contain high-level enchanted loot scaled to your character's level. To exit the tomb quickly, look for the small corridor behind the Word Wall that leads back to the main entrance area, saving you the trouble of navigating the bridges and traps in reverse.
