Zelda BOTW Fairy Fountain Locations: How to Find and Unlock Every Great Fairy
Survival in Hyrule requires more than just a sharp sword and quick reflexes. As enemies scale in difficulty and Guardians become a persistent threat, the base defense of Link’s armor quickly becomes insufficient. The Great Fairy Fountains represent the most critical infrastructure for character progression in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These hidden sanctuaries allow for the permanent enhancement of defensive gear, transforming fragile tunics into legendary mail capable of withstanding the most brutal assaults.
There are four primary Great Fairy Fountains scattered across the corners of the map, along with a fifth unique fountain dedicated to the Horse God. Finding them is only half the battle; unlocking their services requires a significant investment of Lupees and a vast collection of monster parts and flora. Understanding the specific geographic markers and the escalating costs associated with these fountains is essential for any efficient playthrough.
The Cost of Awakening: Rupee Requirements
The Great Fairies—Cotera, Mija, Kaysa, and Tera—have been trapped inside giant flower buds due to a loss of power. To restore them, Link must offer a donation of Rupees. It is important to note that the cost is not tied to a specific fairy, but rather to the order in which they are discovered. The more fairies that are awakened, the more expensive the next one becomes.
- First Great Fairy: 100 Rupees
- Second Great Fairy: 500 Rupees
- Third Great Fairy: 1,000 Rupees
- Fourth Great Fairy: 10,000 Rupees
In total, a player needs 11,600 Rupees to unlock all four sisters. This cumulative cost makes the final fountain a late-game objective for most, requiring dedicated gem farming or stone talus hunting to fund. The number of unlocked fairies directly correlates with the maximum upgrade level for armor. One fairy allows for 1-star upgrades, while all four are required to reach the maximum 4-star (Level 4) enhancement.
Cotera: The West Necluda Fountain
Cotera is typically the first Great Fairy players encounter, as she is situated near Kakariko Village, a primary destination in the early main questline. To find her, head to the Ta’loh Naeg Shrine overlooking Kakariko. From the shrine, follow the path leading north into the woods. The forest here is dense with trees, but a faint, glowing orange path and the distinct, ethereal music of the Great Fairy will guide the way.
This location is closely tied to the "Find the Fairy Fountain" main quest given by Pikango, the traveling artist. While Pikango will lead the way, he eventually tires, leaving Link to find the final clearing alone. The area surrounding Cotera’s bud is a rich source of Silent Princess flowers and Blue Nightshade, both of which are vital for upgrading the Stealth Armor set. Because of its proximity to a fast-travel point and its low initial cost, Cotera is the ideal starting point for armor progression.
Mija: The Akkala Highlands Fountain
Moving to the northeastern reaches of Hyrule, Mija resides in the Akkala region. Her fountain is perched on a cliffside overlooking Lake Akkala, southeast of the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. The most efficient way to reach her is by teleporting to the Dah He Sho Shrine. From the shrine, look toward the small, wooded plateau to the northeast.
Mija’s fountain is surrounded by autumn-colored trees, making it visually distinct from the surrounding landscape. This region is often patrolled by heavy-hitting enemies, so caution is advised when approaching. For players engaged in the lengthy "From the Ground Up" side quest, Mija’s fountain is a convenient stop after visiting Tarrey Town. The flora here includes Armoranth, a sturdy plant used in recipes and upgrades that focus on boosting defensive stats. Gliding down from higher elevations in the Akkala Highlands is the safest way to avoid the Guardian Stalkers that roam the plains below.
Kaysa: The Tabantha Frontier Fountain
Kaysa is located in the Tabantha region, specifically on Piper Ridge. This fountain is easily spotted from the top of the Tabantha Tower. By gliding south-southeast from the tower’s peak, Link can cover most of the distance through the air, landing directly on the ridge where the giant flower bud sits.
The Tabantha Frontier is characterized by its steep cliffs and frequent wind currents. Near the base of the ridge, the Tabantha Bridge Stable offers a side quest titled "A Gift for the Great Fairy," where an NPC named Toren will provide 500 Rupees to help fund the awakening. This is a strategic resource for players who may be short on cash when they reach this third or fourth fountain. The area around Kaysa is populated with Mighty Thistles, which are essential for creating attack-boosting meals and upgrading gear that focuses on offensive capabilities. Be wary of the Guardian Skywatchers that circle the lower perimeter of Piper Ridge; staying at a high elevation is key to avoiding detection.
Tera: The Gerudo Desert Fountain
The final and most remote fountain belongs to Tera, found in the extreme southwest corner of the Gerudo Desert. This location is nestled under the Gerudo Great Skeleton at an area known as Dragon’s Exile. Reaching Tera is a test of endurance and preparation. The deep desert is subject to extreme temperatures—scalding heat during the day and freezing cold at night—requiring appropriate armor or elixirs.
Navigating to this fountain is complicated by a persistent sandstorm that disables the Sheikah Slate’s map functionality. Before entering the storm, it is wise to pin the location of the Great Skeleton. A Sand Seal is almost mandatory for the journey, as walking through the deep dunes is prohibitively slow. Once reached, the Hawa Koth Shrine sits immediately next to the fountain, providing a permanent fast-travel point. Tera’s fountain is surrounded by various Safflina plants (Cool, Warm, and Electric), which are used for elemental resistance upgrades. Due to the 10,000 Rupee cost often associated with this being the final fountain, many players reserve this discovery for the late game.
Malanya: The Horse God Fountain
While not a Great Fairy in the traditional sense, Malanya provides a service that is arguably just as important: the resurrection of fallen horses. Malanya’s fountain is located in the Faron region, south of the Highland Stable. To find him, cross the Horse God Bridge and follow the winding path to the end of the canyon.
Unlocking Malanya requires a flat fee of 1,000 Rupees, regardless of how many Great Fairies have been awakened. Once restored, Malanya can bring back any registered horse that has died during Link’s travels. However, this service is not entirely free of consequence; Malanya is known for his eccentric and slightly intimidating personality, often "joking" about punishing the player if the horse’s death was caused by negligence. The area around this fountain is lush with Endura Carrots, which can be fed to horses to grant them temporary extra stamina or used in high-level cooking.
The Mechanics of Armor Upgrades
Understanding the locations is the first step, but utilizing the fountains effectively requires knowledge of the upgrade system. Each Great Fairy adds one potential "star" to a piece of armor.
- Level 1 (1 Star): Requires basic materials like Chuchu Jelly, Bokoblin horns, or common herbs. Increases defense slightly.
- Level 2 (2 Stars): Requires more specific items like elemental Keese wings or Lizalfos tails. Reaching this level is crucial because it unlocks Set Bonuses. If Link wears a full set of armor (Head, Torso, Legs) and all three pieces are at least Level 2, he gains a unique passive ability. Examples include the Stealth Set’s "Night Speed Up" or the Rubber Set’s "Unshockable" status.
- Level 3 (3 Stars): Requires rarer monster parts, such as Moblin Guts or tails from elemental Lizalfos. The defense boost becomes significant enough to survive direct hits from Lynels.
- Level 4 (4 Stars): The maximum level. Requires elite materials, including Lynel Guts, Star Fragments, or parts from the three Great Dragons (Dinraal, Nayru, and Farosh). A full set of Level 4 Ancient Armor, for instance, makes Link nearly impervious to Guardian attacks.
It is important to note that not all armor can be upgraded. Items like the Nintendo Switch Shirt, the Warm Doublet, and certain DLC masks remain at their base stats. Conversely, sets like the Soldier’s Armor offer the highest raw defense in the game when fully upgraded, even without a specific set bonus.
Resource Farming at the Fountains
One of the most overlooked benefits of the Great Fairy Fountains is that they serve as renewable resource hubs. Every time the world resets during a Blood Moon, the materials surrounding the fountains respawn.
- Fairies: Every fountain (including the Horse God’s) will have several small Fairies fluttering around the flower bud. These are essential for survival, as they automatically revive Link with five hearts if his health reaches zero. To catch them, Link must crouch and sneak slowly or use stealth-boosting armor, as they are easily startled.
- Rare Flora: As mentioned, each fountain has a signature plant. Cotera has Silent Princess (rare and vital for the Master Sword’s enhancement and Stealth gear). Mija has Armoranth. Kaysa has Mighty Thistles. Tera has Safflina. Cultivating a habit of visiting all four fountains after a Blood Moon is an excellent way to stockpile upgrade materials without having to scour the entire map.
Strategic Exploration Order
While Breath of the Wild allows for total freedom, a specific order of discovery can make the journey smoother. Most players should prioritize Cotera first due to her proximity to Kakariko. Following this, Kaysa in Tabantha is a strong second choice because the Tabantha Tower provides such an easy glide path to her, and the 500-Rupee quest nearby helps mitigate the cost.
Mija in Akkala is best tackled once you have at least two or three stamina wheels or the Revali’s Gale ability, as the verticality of the Akkala region can be taxing. Finally, Tera should be the last objective. The environmental hazards of the Gerudo Desert and the high Rupee cost of the fourth fountain make it a natural late-game milestone.
By securing all four locations, the player effectively removes the "glass cannon" vulnerability of the early game. With a fully upgraded set of armor, Link can transition from a survivor hiding in the shadows to a champion capable of walking into Hyrule Castle and challenging Calamity Ganon head-on. The search for the Great Fairies is, in many ways, the true path to becoming the legendary hero of Hyrule.
