How to Solve the BotW Sign of the Shadow Shrine Quest
Exploring the vast ridges of the Gerudo Highlands often leads to some of the most intricate environmental puzzles in Hyrule. Among these, the Sign of the Shadow shrine quest stands out as a classic test of observation and timing. This quest, tied to the iconic Rito bard Kass, is essential for anyone aiming to complete all 120 shrines in the base game. Successfully navigating this challenge reveals the Sasa Kai Shrine, nestled deep within the rocky shadows of the desert border.
Reaching the Gerudo Tower
The journey begins at the Gerudo Tower. This Sheikah Tower is located in the Gerudo Highlands, north of the Kara Kara Bazaar and northwest of the Gerudo Canyon Stable. Unlike some towers that sit in the middle of open plains, the Gerudo Tower is perched atop a massive pit, surrounded by sheer cliffs.
Approaching this tower requires significant stamina or the use of Revali’s Gale if you have already conquered Vah Medoh. A common route involves traveling from the Gerudo Canyon Stable and heading north through the mountains. Be prepared for extreme temperature fluctuations; the highlands are bitterly cold at night and scorching during the day. Wearing the Snowquill set or consuming spicy elixirs is highly recommended for the ascent.
Once you reach the top of the tower, you will hear the familiar accordion music of Kass. He is perched on one of the tower's stone outcrops, contemplating an ancient song passed down by his teacher. Speaking to him triggers the "Sign of the Shadow" shrine quest.
Decoding the Ancient Song
Kass recites a cryptic verse that serves as your only set of instructions:
"As light shines from northwest skies,
From the tower's shadow an arrow flies.
Pierce heaven's light to reveal the prize."
This riddle contains three critical components: the position of the light (the sun or moon), the position of the shadow (cast by the Gerudo Tower), and the action required by the player (shooting an arrow). Many players mistake the direction of the arrow or the specific timing, but the mechanics are quite rigid. The "light" refers to the celestial body in the northwest, which occurs in the late afternoon or late at night. The "prize" is, of course, the hidden Sasa Kai Shrine.
Locating the Pedestal
From the top of the Gerudo Tower, look directly to the southeast. You will see a circular Sheikah pedestal located on a flat ridge below the tower. This platform is the focal point of the quest. Use your Paraglider to glide down from the tower to this platform.
It is important to land directly on the pedestal and clear any nearby enemies. There are occasionally monsters roaming the surrounding cliffs, and getting knocked off the platform during the specific timing window can force you to wait another full day/night cycle. If you arrive early, you can start a campfire using a piece of flint and a bundle of wood to pass the time.
The Afternoon Method: Timing and Execution
The most common way to complete the Sign of the Shadow is during the day. The quest specifies that the light must be in the northwest. In the world of Hyrule, the sun moves into this position during the mid-afternoon.
- Wait until 2:00 PM: Sit by your campfire or simply watch the Sheikah Slate clock.
- Watch the Shadow: As the clock nears 3:00 PM, the massive shadow cast by the Gerudo Tower will begin to stretch toward the pedestal.
- The Glow: Between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, the shadow of the tower's peak will align perfectly with the pedestal. When this happens, the pedestal will glow with a distinct orange Sheikah light. A subtle sound cue also plays to indicate that the window is active.
- The Action: Stand in the center of the glowing pedestal. Draw your bow and aim directly at the sun, which should be positioned right above the top of the Gerudo Tower from your perspective. Fire a single arrow (a regular arrow is sufficient) toward the sun.
If done correctly, a cutscene will trigger. The earth will rumble, and the Sasa Kai Shrine will rise from the ground right next to the pedestal.
The Nighttime Method: Using the Moon
While the song mentions "light," many players are unaware that the moon also counts as a valid light source for this quest. If you prefer to operate under the cover of darkness, or if you missed the afternoon window, you can use the moon.
This typically occurs around 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM. Just like the sun, the moon will move into the northwest quadrant of the sky, casting the tower's shadow onto the pedestal. During this time, the pedestal will glow with a blue/white light. Stand on the platform and fire an arrow at the moon to trigger the shrine's appearance. This is a great alternative if you are already in the area hunting for night-exclusive materials or Star Fragments.
Inside Sasa Kai Shrine: A Modest Test of Strength
Revealing the shrine is only half the battle. Once you enter the Sasa Kai Shrine, you are presented with "A Modest Test of Strength." This involves a combat encounter with a Guardian Scout II. While not as difficult as the "Major" tests, it still requires proper preparation and tactical awareness.
Guardian Scout II Mechanics
The Guardian Scout in this shrine is equipped with two weapons, usually a Guardian Sword and a Guardian Shield or Spear. Understanding its attack phases is key to a quick victory:
- Melee Phase: The Scout will approach you and perform standard weapon swings. These can be parried with a shield or avoided with a Perfect Dodge to trigger a Flurry Rush. Using a Perfect Dodge is the most efficient way to deal massive damage safely.
- Spinning Attack: The Scout will retract its head and begin spinning rapidly toward you. Do not try to block this with a standard shield. Instead, hide behind one of the stone pillars in the arena. The Scout will crash into the pillar, stunning itself and leaving it vulnerable to several seconds of uninterrupted attacks.
- Laser Circle: When the Scout's health drops below 50%, it may retreat and fire a continuous laser while spinning, creating an updraft. Use the Paraglider to catch the wind, soar above the Scout, and perform a plunging attack or fire arrows at its eye to stun it.
- Final Laser Phase: When the Scout is nearly defeated, it will stop moving and turn blue, charging a series of powerful laser blasts. You must finish it off quickly. If you cannot kill it in time, use a shield parry to reflect the laser back at the Scout, which usually results in an instant kill for this health bracket.
Recommended Gear
Ancient or Guardian weapons deal significantly more damage to the Scout. If you have weapons from previous shrines or have visited the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab, use them here. Lightning-based weapons or Shock Arrows are also highly effective at momentarily stunning the Scout, allowing you to reposition.
Rewards and Completion
After defeating the Guardian Scout, the gate to the monk Sasa Kai will open. Inside the treasure chest, you will find a Frostblade. This is an excellent elemental weapon, especially useful in the Gerudo Desert for freezing enemies like Lizalfos or providing heat resistance while held.
Speak to the monk to receive your Spirit Orb. Collecting these is vital for increasing your Heart Containers or Stamina Vessel at Goddess Statues. Given the mountainous terrain of the Gerudo Highlands, most players find that investing Spirit Orbs into stamina makes further exploration significantly easier.
Pro Tips for the Sign of the Shadow
To make this quest as smooth as possible, keep the following advice in mind:
- Arrow Efficiency: You don't need fancy arrows. A basic wooden arrow is enough to trigger the pedestal. Don't waste Ancient or Bomb arrows on the sun.
- Weather Consistency: One of the benefits of the Gerudo Highlands is that it rarely rains. You won't have to worry about your campfire being extinguished while waiting for the shadow to align.
- Travel Medallion: If you have the DLC and have obtained the Travel Medallion, placing it on the pedestal is a smart move if you need to leave and gather more arrows or food, allowing you to return instantly for the next time window.
- Visual Cues: If the pedestal is not glowing, the arrow will not work. Ensure you see the orange or blue light before firing. The timing window is roughly one in-game hour, which translates to 60 real-world seconds.
Why This Quest Matters
The Sign of the Shadow is more than just a checklist item. It exemplifies the environmental storytelling of Breath of the Wild. The quest connects the geography of the land (the height of the tower) with the physics of light and shadow, rewarding players for their patience and their ability to interpret the world's natural cycles. It also provides a narrative link to Kass's past and the legacy of the Rito court poet who served the Royal Family before the Calamity. Completing it brings you one step closer to uncovering the full history of the Fallen Hero and the Rito's devotion to their mission.
Navigating the highlands and timing the shadow may feel tedious if you are in a rush, but the view of the desert sunset from that pedestal is one of the most serene moments in the game. Take your time, watch the light move across the sand, and enjoy the discovery of one of Hyrule's best-kept secrets.
