Marnie's Shop Hours Stardew: How to Actually Buy Hay When You Need It
Finding the counter empty at Marnie’s Ranch is a rite of passage for every farm manager. You walk in with a backpack full of gold, ready to buy a dozen chickens or an emergency stack of hay because it's the first day of Winter, only to find Marnie staring at her microwave or wandering off to Pierre’s. Understanding the logic behind the ranch's operations is the only way to prevent your livestock from becoming grumpy or, worse, losing production value due to starvation.
The standard operating window
On a normal week, the ranch shop is officially open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, from Wednesday through Sunday. While the building itself stays unlocked until 6:00 PM—allowing you to enter, browse the living room, or gift items to Jas and Shane—the commerce window is strictly tied to Marnie’s physical presence behind the wooden desk.
If the clock hits 4:01 PM, she will step away, even if you are standing right in front of her. This rigid adherence to her finishing time is why many experienced players suggest arriving no later than 10:00 AM to ensure you have enough time to manage your inventory and animal placements.
The Monday and Tuesday problem
Marnie is one of the few shopkeepers who takes a full two-day weekend during the traditional work week. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the shop is functionally closed, regardless of the weather.
On Mondays, Marnie spends much of her day running errands and visiting Pierre’s General Store to stock up on household supplies. She typically leaves the house around 8:00 AM and doesn't return to the kitchen area until late afternoon.
On Tuesdays, she participates in the local aerobics class held at Pierre’s. This is a community event where several Pelican Town residents gather for exercise. She leaves her ranch around 10:00 AM and won't be back in a position to sell you anything for the rest of the day. If you find yourself out of hay on a Monday morning, you are looking at a minimum of 48 hours before you can legally buy more, unless you’ve unlocked alternative sources.
Critical calendar exceptions
Beyond the weekly schedule, there are specific dates where Marnie’s personal life overrides the ranch’s business needs. These are the dates that usually catch players off guard during long-term planning:
- Fall 18 (Her Birthday): Marnie has her annual check-up at Harvey’s Clinic on her birthday. She leaves the ranch around 10:30 AM and spends the entire day at the clinic and walking back.
- Winter 18: Marnie takes Jas to the clinic for the child's annual check-up. This follows a similar pattern to her own birthday, leaving the shop unattended for the majority of the daylight hours.
- Spring 17: If the bus service to the Calico Desert has been restored, Marnie may occasionally visit the Desert, though this is less frequent than her standard town errands.
- Rainy Days: Interestingly, rain does not usually force Marnie to stay behind the counter on her off-days. If it is Tuesday and raining, she might skip the aerobics class, but she still won't necessarily open the shop. She often uses rainy days to linger in her bedroom or kitchen.
The Game-Changer: The Animal Catalogue
As of the 1.6 update, the most significant quality-of-life improvement for animal lovers is the Animal Catalogue. This is an item that essentially negates the frustration of Marnie’s schedule.
Once you reach Year 2, you can purchase the Animal Catalogue directly from Marnie’s shop for 5,000g. Once read, it grants you the ability to access her shop interface even when she is not behind the counter. As long as you can enter the building (between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM), you can walk up to the counter and trigger the shopping menu. This is arguably the most important investment for high-efficiency farming, as it allows you to buy hay and animals on Mondays, Tuesdays, and even during her clinic visits.
Shop Inventory and Livestock Pricing
When Marnie is available, she offers a wide array of livestock and essential farming tools. It is important to remember that livestock availability is tied to your farm building upgrades. You cannot purchase a Goat if you only have a basic Barn; you must have a Big Barn first.
Livestock List:
- Chicken (800g): Requires a Coop. Available in white, brown, and occasionally blue (after Shane’s 8-heart event).
- Cow (1,500g): Requires a Barn. Produces milk daily.
- Goat (4,000g): Requires a Big Barn. Produces milk every other day.
- Duck (1,200g): Requires a Big Coop. Can swim in farm ponds and produces duck eggs or feathers.
- Sheep (8,000g): Requires a Deluxe Barn. Produced wool can be turned into cloth.
- Rabbit (8,000g): Requires a Deluxe Coop. Great for high-value wool and the rare Rabbit's Foot.
- Pig (16,000g): Requires a Deluxe Barn. The primary source of Truffles, which are essential for Oil production.
Essential Supplies:
- Hay (50g): The basic food source for all indoor animals.
- Heater (2,000g): A mandatory purchase for Winter. Keeping your animals warm prevents the loss of friendship and ensures they continue producing high-quality goods during the cold months.
- Milk Pail (1,000g): Used to harvest milk from cows and goats.
- Shears (1,000g): Used to harvest wool from sheep.
- Auto-Grabber (25,000g): Available once you reach Farming Level 10. This automatically harvests milk, wool, and eggs within the building it is placed in.
New Pet Options in the 1.6 Era
The ranch has expanded its services beyond just livestock. Players can now adopt additional pets once they have reached maximum friendship with their initial pet. Marnie sells "Pet Licenses" for cats, dogs, and even turtles.
Prices for these licenses range from 40,000g for standard cats and dogs to 500,000g for the rare purple turtle. These pets require their own outdoor bowls and can significantly enhance the atmosphere of your farm, though they are purely cosmetic and don't provide the same economic returns as a barn full of pigs.
Strategic planning for the "Marnie Gap"
To avoid the stress of Marnie’s erratic hours, successful farmers employ a few key strategies. The first is the Silo Strategy. Before buying your first animal, build at least one Silo (requires 100g, 100 Stone, 10 Clay, and 5 Copper Bars from Robin). This allows you to store up to 240 pieces of hay. Instead of buying hay, use your scythe on the wild grass around your farm; it will automatically transfer to the Silo.
Secondly, always perform a "Hay Check" on Sunday mornings. Since the shop is closed on Monday and Tuesday, Sunday is your last chance to replenish your stock for the beginning of the week. If your Silo is looking low and it’s Fall 28, you must buy hay on Sunday, or your animals will start Winter with empty stomachs.
Lastly, prioritize the Animal Catalogue as soon as Year 2 begins. The 5,000g investment pays for itself in saved time and reduced frustration within the first season of use. It transforms the ranch from a temperamental shop into a reliable resource.
Navigating the Ranch Layout
The ranch is located in the northeast corner of Cindersap Forest. If you are coming from your farm, take the south exit and head slightly east. Besides the shop counter, you can explore the bedrooms of Shane and Jas, provided you have at least two hearts of friendship with them.
A notable secret for those progressing through the town's mysteries: the Mayor's "Lucky Purple Shorts" are often found in Marnie’s bedroom. Gaining access to this room requires a solid friendship with her, which can be easily achieved by gifting her Diamonds, Farmer's Lunch, or Pumpkin Pie, all of which she loves.
Managing your relationship with Marnie isn't just about the gifts, though. It’s about respecting the schedule of a woman who has to manage a nephew, a niece, a secret relationship with the Mayor, and an entire ranch of animals. While it can be annoying when she isn't there to sell you a heater in the middle of a blizzard, knowing exactly where she is and why she’s there makes your life in the valley much smoother.
