Where to Find Every Skyrim Speech Trainer to Level Up Fast
Speech is one of the most underrated skills in Skyrim, yet it dictates the very economy of your playthrough. Whether you want to sell dragon bones for a premium, persuade guards to look the other way, or pass critical dialogue checks in the main questline, leveling Speech is essential. While you can grind this skill by selling thousands of iron daggers, visiting a Skyrim speech trainer is the most efficient way to bypass the early-level slog. This article details every trainer available, their locations, and the strategies you need to recover the thousands of gold you will spend on their services.
The Three Tiers of Speech Training
In Skyrim, trainers are categorized by their mastery level. You cannot simply go to a master trainer at level 15 and expect them to take you to 90. Each trainer has a ceiling, and knowing which one to visit based on your current skill level will save you unnecessary carriage rides across the frozen tundra.
- Adept Trainers: These NPCs can train your Speech skill up to level 50. They are perfect for early-game characters who have just left Helgen or Whiterun.
- Expert Trainers: These masters of rhetoric can push your skill from 51 up to level 75.
- Master Trainers: There is usually only one (or two, including DLC) who can take you from 76 up to level 90. Beyond level 90, you are on your own, relying on skill books and actual trading.
It is important to remember that you can only train five times per character level. This limit applies across all skills, so if you spend five points on Archery, you cannot train Speech until you level up again.
Adept Speech Trainers (Up to Level 50)
For most players starting a new save, these are the first stops. They are relatively accessible and located in major trade hubs or along common travel routes.
Revyn Sadri (Windhelm)
Revyn Sadri owns "Sadri’s Used Wares" in the Gray Quarter of Windhelm. He is perhaps the most convenient Adept trainer because he is also a general goods merchant.
Before he will offer training, you must complete a small favor for him called "That Was Always There." He asks you to secretly return a stolen ring to Viarmo’s house. Once the ring is planted and the quest is turned in, he becomes a trainer. The advantage here is significant: because he is a merchant, the gold you pay him for training enters his store's inventory. You can immediately sell him your looted weapons or crafted jewelry to get your gold back.
Dro'marash (Khajiit Caravans)
Dro'marash is a Khajiit who travels with the trade caravan led by Ahkari. This caravan typically moves between Dawnstar and Riften.
Finding Dro'marash can be tricky since the caravans are always on the move. They usually camp outside the main gates of the cities for a few days before moving on. If you see a group of Khajiit tents outside Riften, check for Dro'marash. He doesn't require a quest to unlock his services, making him a great choice if you happen to stumble upon his camp early in the game.
Expert Speech Trainers (Up to Level 75)
Once you cross the level 50 threshold, the cost of training increases significantly. At this stage, you need mentors with more professional backgrounds.
Ogmund the Skald (Markarth)
Ogmund can be found in the Silver-Blood Inn in Markarth, usually leaning against the pillar near the fire pit or performing. As a veteran skald, his knowledge of the spoken word is vast.
Similar to Revyn, Ogmund may require a small task before he is willing to help you. More importantly, Markarth is a high-level area for new players, so ensure you are prepared for the Forsworn-infested roads leading to the city. Ogmund is purely a trainer and not a merchant, meaning the gold you pay him stays in his personal inventory, making it harder to retrieve through legal means.
Ronthil (Castle Volkihar - Dawnguard DLC)
If you have the Dawnguard expansion and choose to side with the vampires, Ronthil becomes an available Expert trainer. He is a member of the Volkihar clan and can be found in the main hall of the castle.
Ronthil is an excellent alternative to Ogmund because he also acts as a merchant for the vampire faction. This allows for the same "pay and trade back" strategy used with Revyn Sadri. However, if you side with the Dawnguard, Ronthil will remain hostile, and you will lose access to his services permanently.
Master Speech Trainer (Up to Level 90)
Reaching the pinnacle of Speech requires the guidance of the most prestigious orator in Skyrim.
Giraud Gemane (Solitude)
Giraud Gemane is the Dean of History at the Bards College in Solitude. He is the only Master level Speech trainer in the base game. You can almost always find him inside the Bards College building or wandering the streets of Solitude nearby.
Giraud does not require you to fully join the Bards College to access training, though starting the "Tending the Flames" quest is a natural way to find him. As a Master trainer, his fees are exorbitant. Training from level 89 to 90 can cost thousands of gold septims. Since Giraud is not a merchant, you cannot simply trade items to get your money back.
The Cost of Persuasion: Training Math
Training isn't cheap. The game uses a specific formula to determine how much gold a trainer will charge you per level. Understanding this helps you budget your dungeon-delving loot.
- Levels 15–50: 10 × [Current Skill Level] + 50 gold.
- Levels 51–75: 30 × [Current Skill Level] + 50 gold.
- Levels 76–90: 50 × [Current Skill Level] + 50 gold.
One crucial tip: training costs are based on your modified skill level. If you are wearing an Amulet of Dibella or the Masque of Clavicus Vile, your Speech skill might appear higher than it actually is. This will cause the trainer to charge you more. Always strip off your charisma-boosting gear before talking to a trainer to ensure you are paying the base rate.
How to Get Your Gold Back
Paying for five levels at the Master tier can cost upwards of 20,000 gold. Most players don't want to lose that much capital. There are three primary ways to recoup the cost of a Skyrim speech trainer.
1. The Merchant-Trainer Loop
As mentioned with Revyn Sadri and Ronthil, if the trainer is also a merchant, the gold you pay them for training is added to their "Vendor Gold" pool. After you finish your five training sessions, open the trade menu. You will see they suddenly have thousands of gold. Sell them your heaviest, most expensive loot (like Enchanted Ebony Waraxes or Daedric armor) to take that gold back. This effectively makes the training free, provided you have enough loot to sell.
2. The Pickpocket Method
If the trainer is not a merchant (like Giraud Gemane or Ogmund), the gold goes into their personal inventory. You can attempt to pickpocket the gold back. However, be warned: the difficulty of pickpocketing is tied to the value of the item. Stealing back 5,000 gold is nearly impossible even with a Pickpocket skill of 100, unless you have specific perks or enchantments.
Pro-tip: If you use the "Unrelenting Force" shout or a paralysis poison on the trainer, you can pickpocket them as they are getting back up from the ground. During this specific animation, the success rate is effectively 100%, even if the UI says 0%.
3. The Follower Cheat (Not applicable to Speech)
In some skills, like Archery or Heavy Armor, you can recruit the trainer as a follower and simply take the gold back from their inventory. Unfortunately, none of the Speech trainers in Skyrim are currently available as followers in the vanilla game. If you are playing with mods, this might change, but for the standard experience, you must rely on trading or pickpocketing.
Maximizing Speech Experience Outside of Training
While trainers get you to level 90, you still need to bridge the gaps. Speech experience is granted based on the value of the item sold, but there is a catch: you only get experience for the first item in a stack if you sell them all at once.
If you have 50 Iron Daggers, do not click "Sell All." Sell them one by one. It is tedious, but it provides 50 times the experience. Additionally, always look for the following items to supplement your training:
- The 2920, Second Seed, v5: A skill book often found in Sadri's Used Wares or the Bards College.
- A Dance in Fire, v6: Found in Meeko's Shack or the Dead Man's Drink in Falkreath.
- Biography of the Wolf Queen: Located in the Blue Palace in Solitude.
Reading these books provides a permanent +1 to Speech. Save these for when your skill is level 90+ to maximize their value, as the "cost" of those levels is much higher than the early ones.
Is Speech Training Worth It?
In the late game, Speech becomes a powerhouse. With the "Merchant" perk, you can sell any type of item to any kind of merchant, and with "Investor," you can increase a shop's gold permanently. By utilizing the trainers in Windhelm, Markarth, and Solitude, you can reach these high-tier perks before you even finish the first act of the main quest.
Just remember to bring enough loot to trade back your gold, and always check the roads outside the cities for those elusive Khajiit caravans. With Giraud Gemane's help in Solitude, you'll be the most silver-tongued Dragonborn to ever walk the halls of High Hrothgar.
