Where to Find Every Speech Trainer in Skyrim
Speechcraft is one of the most underrated skills in Skyrim. While it doesn't help you slay a dragon or sneak through a dungeon, it dictates how much gold remains in your pocket after visiting a merchant and determines whether you can talk your way out of a prison cell. Investing in a speech trainer in Skyrim is the fastest way to unlock game-changing perks like 'Merchant' (selling any item to any vendor) and 'Investor.'
Learning from professionals in the field is restricted by both your current skill level and your gold reserves. In Skyrim, training sessions are limited to five per character level across all skills combined. Therefore, choosing when and where to visit a speech trainer requires a bit of tactical planning.
The Three Tiers of Speech Training
Not every silver-tongued NPC can teach you everything they know. Skyrim categorizes trainers into three distinct proficiency levels, which determine the maximum skill ceiling they can help you reach:
- Adept Trainers: Can increase your Speech skill up to level 50.
- Expert Trainers: Can increase your Speech skill up to level 75.
- Master Trainers: Can increase your Speech skill up to level 90.
Once your natural skill reaches level 90, no NPC in the game can provide further formal training. From 90 to 100, you must rely on skill books, unique quest rewards, or the old-fashioned method of bartering and persuading.
Adept Speech Trainers: Level 0 to 50
For early-game characters, these trainers are the most accessible. They are relatively cheap and located in major hubs or along common travel routes.
Revyn Sadri (Windhelm)
Revyn Sadri owns 'Sadri’s Used Wares' in the Gray Quarter of Windhelm. He is one of the most convenient trainers because he also functions as a general goods merchant.
Before he offers training, you must complete a small favor for him. He accidentally purchased a stolen ring and needs you to sneak it back into Viola Giordano’s house without her noticing. Once you complete this objective—called 'That Was Always There'—he becomes an Adept-level speech trainer. The beauty of training with Revyn is that he is a merchant; the gold you pay him for training goes into his store's gold pool, allowing you to sell him items to effectively get your money back.
Dro'marash (Khajiit Caravans)
Dro'marash is a member of Ahkari’s trade caravan. This group travels in a loop between Riften and Dawnstar. Finding him requires a bit of patience or luck, as the caravan spends a few days outside the gates of one city before moving to the other.
Since he is part of the Khajiit caravans, he doesn't require a prerequisite quest to offer training. He is an excellent choice if you are frequently traveling the roads of the Rift or the Pale and find yourself with excess gold between dungeon crawls.
Expert Speech Trainers: Level 50 to 75
Once you cross the level 50 threshold, the cost of training spikes significantly. You will need to seek out more specialized characters, one of whom is locked behind a major DLC expansion.
Ogmund (Markarth)
Ogmund is a local skald who can usually be found at the Silver-Blood Inn in Markarth during the evening or at his house during the day. He is an Expert trainer, meaning he can take you from level 1 all the way to 75 if you have the gold. Unlike Revyn, he doesn't have a specific quest requirement for training, though he is involved in a quest for the Thalmor where you are asked to find evidence of his Talos worship. Note that if you turn him in, his availability as a trainer may be compromised.
Ronthil (Castle Volkihar)
If you have the Dawnguard DLC and choose the path of the Vampire Lord, Ronthil is your go-to Expert speech trainer. He is a high-elf found within Castle Volkihar. He serves as an assistant to the court and functions as a merchant. Like Revyn Sadri, the gold you pay Ronthil for training can be recovered by selling him items from your inventory, making him an incredibly efficient choice for those siding with the vampires.
Master Speech Trainer: Level 75 to 90
There is only one vanilla Master-level speech trainer in Skyrim. Reaching him requires you to visit the capital city of the province.
Giraud Gemane (The Bards College, Solitude)
Giraud Gemane is the Dean of History at the Bards College in Solitude. He is the only NPC capable of training your Speech skill up to level 90. To access his services, you generally need to join the Bards College by speaking to Viarmo and completing the 'Tending the Flames' quest.
Giraud is also involved in the quest 'Rjorn's Drum,' where he asks you to retrieve a legendary instrument. As a Master trainer, his fees are exorbitant. Training from level 89 to 90 can cost thousands of septims. However, since he resides in the Bards College, you are surrounded by other skill-boosting opportunities, making the trip well worth the investment.
Calculating the Cost of Training
The price of a training session isn't fixed; it scales based on your current skill level. The more silver-tongued you become, the more your mentors charge for their wisdom.
- Levels 15–50: 10 × [Skill Level] + 50 Gold
- Levels 51–75: 30 × [Skill Level] + 50 Gold
- Levels 75–90: 50 × [Skill Level] + 50 Gold
Crucial SEO-Standard Tip: The cost of training is calculated based on your modified skill level. If you are wearing an Amulet of Dibella or a Masque of Clavicus Vile, your Speech level might appear higher than it actually is. For example, if your base skill is 40 but gear brings it to 55, the game will charge you based on level 55 prices. Always remove Speech-boosting equipment before starting a training session to save gold.
Strategies to Get Your Gold Back
Paying for training is expensive, but seasoned players rarely let that gold stay in the trainer's pocket. There are three primary ways to recoup your losses:
1. The Merchant-Trainer Loop
As mentioned with Revyn Sadri and Ronthil, trainers who are also merchants add the training fee to their personal/store inventory. If you pay 2,000 gold for training, that trainer now has 2,000 more gold available to buy your loot. This is the most legitimate and effective way to level Speech while simultaneously clearing out your inventory of heavy dragon bones or enchanted weapons.
2. The Pickpocket Method
If the trainer is not a merchant, the gold goes into their personal inventory. You can attempt to pickpocket the gold back immediately after the session. However, as the cost of training increases at higher levels, the gold stacks become very heavy, making the success rate drop to 0% for most players.
To bypass this, you can use the 'Paralysis' exploit. If you paralyze a trainer (via spell, poison, or the Ice Form shout) and pickpocket them just as they are getting up from the ground, you can steal any amount of gold with a 100% success rate, regardless of what the UI says.
3. The Follower Exploit
While there are no vanilla followers who are Speech trainers, the logic applies to other skills. If a trainer is also a follower (like Faendal for Archery or Vilkas for Two-Handed), you can simply ask to trade items with them after training and take your gold back from their inventory. For Speech, this generally requires community-made mods, as the developers intentionally kept Speech trainers as non-followers to maintain the game's economy.
Boosting the Efficiency of Speech Training
To make the most of your five training sessions per level, you should stack experience bonuses. This doesn't reduce the cost of training, but it helps you level up your character faster so you can unlock the next five training slots.
- The Thief Stone: Located southwest of Riverwood, this standing stone grants a 20% bonus to the rate at which you learn stealth skills, including Speech.
- Gift of the Gab: After completing the Bards College quest 'Tending the Flames,' you receive this permanent ability which makes Speech level 15% faster.
- Well Rested/Lover's Comfort: Sleeping in an owned bed or with a spouse provides a 10% to 15% experience boost for all skills for 8 in-game hours.
Passive Speech Leveling and Skill Books
If you have already used your five training sessions for the level, you can still find ways to boost your Speech skill for free. Skyrim contains several 'Skill Books' that grant a permanent +1 to Speech when read. It is highly recommended to save these books until your Speech skill is level 80 or higher, as the 'cost' of leveling manually at that stage is much higher than at level 20.
Common Speech Skill Books:
- 2920, Second Seed, v5
- A Dance in Fire, v6
- A Dance in Fire, v7
- Biography of the Wolf Queen
- The Buying Game
Additionally, the Oghma Infinium, obtained from the quest 'Discerning the Transmundane,' can increase your Speech skill (along with all other stealth skills) by a staggering 5 points if you choose the Path of Shadow.
When Should You Visit a Speech Trainer?
Because Speech levels naturally through the act of selling items, many players ignore trainers until the late game. However, the most efficient strategy is to use trainers to hit the Level 50 milestone. At level 50, you can unlock the Merchant perk, which is arguably one of the most useful perks in the entire game. It allows you to sell any type of item (like heavy armor or potions) to any merchant (like a blacksmith or a wizard).
If you find yourself with an abundance of gold and no items left to sell, spend your training sessions on Giraud Gemane in Solitude. High-level Speech is the key to becoming the wealthiest individual in Skyrim, ensuring that every piece of loot you find is worth its weight in gold.
Ultimately, a speech trainer in Skyrim isn't just selling you words—they are selling you the ability to manipulate the world's economy to your advantage. Whether you're bribing a guard to overlook a crime or convincing a merchant to part with a rare artifact for half its value, the investment in training pays for itself ten times over.
