Effective Routing: A Complete Dark Souls Remastered Walkthrough
Progressing through Lordran requires more than just mechanical skill; it demands a strategic understanding of the world’s interconnected layout and the mechanics that govern survival. This walkthrough outlines an optimized path through Dark Souls Remastered, focusing on efficient character growth, essential NPC questlines, and a routing strategy that empowers the player early on.
Starting Your Journey: Character Foundations
Efficiency begins at the character creation screen. While any class can eventually master any playstyle, starting with the Bandit class provides a robust foundation for those leaning toward melee-centric builds. The Bandit’s high starting Strength and Endurance make it easier to wield heavy weaponry early in the game.
For the starting gift, the Master Key is the most practical choice. It allows access to late-game areas and shortcuts that are otherwise locked, facilitating an early-game power surge that can significantly smooth the difficulty curve.
The Northern Undead Asylum
The Asylum serves as the tutorial, but it contains items that shouldn't be overlooked. After retrieving your weapon and shield, you will face the Asylum Demon. For those looking to finish this encounter quickly, a plunging attack from the ledge above deals massive damage.
Before leaving via the crow, ensure you have collected the Estus Flask and the Undead Asylum F2 East Key from the dying knight, Oscar. A small tip: before approaching the crow’s nest to depart, check the cliffside for a Soul of a Lost Undead. Once you move to Firelink Shrine, these early souls help in reaching the minimum requirements for heavier weapons.
Firelink Shrine: The Early Power Grab
Upon arriving at Firelink Shrine, the instinct for many is to head toward the stairs leading up. However, an optimized route suggests a brief detour.
- The Graveyard: Behind the shrine lies a graveyard filled with skeletons. While fighting them is discouraged at a low level, you can sprint past them to loot the Zweihander and the Caduceus Round Shield. The Zweihander is one of the most reliable weapons in the game due to its high poise damage.
- New Londo Ruins: Take the lift below Firelink. Use the Master Key to open the gate to the Valley of Drakes. Cross the small bridge and enter the cave leading to Blighttown. Descend the ladders to find the Crimson Armor Set and the Tin Banishment Catalyst. This armor offers exceptional defense-to-weight ratios for the early game.
- The Fire Keeper Soul: In New Londo Ruins, sprint across the narrow wooden walkways to grab the Fire Keeper Soul. Using a Homeward Bone immediately after helps avoid the ghosts. Give this soul to Anastacia (the caged NPC below the Firelink bonfire) to upgrade your Estus Flask to +1.
By following this detour, you enter the first major area with a +1 flask and high-tier gear, changing the dynamic of the upcoming encounters.
Undead Burg and the Taurus Demon
The path to the Undead Burg is located up the cliffside near the Firelink bonfire. Clear the hollows and reach the first bonfire in the Burg. From here, you can visit the Undead Merchant to purchase the Residence Key and potentially a Light Crossbow for ranged options.
When facing the Taurus Demon, utilize the ladder behind you to perform plunging attacks. If you are wielding the Zweihander with two hands, two or three such attacks will typically conclude the fight. Proceed across the bridge, but be mindful of the Hellkite Drake. Rolling through the dragon's fire or timing your sprints between the stone alcoves is necessary to reach the basement door.
Undead Parish and the First Bell
The Undead Parish houses the first Blacksmith, Andre of Astora. This is perhaps the most important NPC in the game. Prioritize upgrading your weapon to +5 using Titanite Shards.
Before tackling the Bell Gargoyles, ensure you have freed Lautrec of Carim from his cell using the Mystery Key found in the Parish. You can also find a Fire Keeper Soul behind the Altar in the cathedral, guarded by a Berenike Knight.
Boss: Bell Gargoyles At +5, your weapon should make short work of the first gargoyle. When the second one appears to breathe fire, focus on flanking the first one to remove it from the fight. Cutting off the tail provides the Gargoyle Tail Axe, though it is not a requirement for most builds. Ring the bell and talk to Oswald at the base of the tower to acquire the "Well Done" gesture.
The Depths and the Gaping Dragon
While the Master Key allows you to skip the Depths, it is recommended to visit for the Large Ember, which Andre needs to upgrade weapons to +10.
In the Depths, rescue Laurentius of the Great Swamp from the barrels. This unlocks Pyromancy, a powerful tool that does not require stat scaling to be effective. The Gaping Dragon boss is a test of patience; stay at a distance until it slams its head down and charges. Once it hits a wall, it remains vulnerable for several seconds. Avoid its tail swipe by staying near its hind legs.
Blighttown and Quelaag’s Domain
If using the Master Key shortcut via the Valley of Drakes, Blighttown is significantly less tedious. Descend the water wheel and reach the swamp bonfire. This area causes poison buildup, so wearing the Crimson Set or using Purple Moss Clumps is advised.
Boss: Chaos Witch Quelaag Stay close to her spider head’s side to avoid her sword swings. When the human half slumps over, she is preparing an Area of Effect (AoE) blast—roll away immediately. Defeating her allows you to ring the second bell, opening the gates to Sen's Fortress.
Important NPC: After the boss, find the hidden wall behind the bell lever to meet The Fair Lady and Eingyi. Joining the Chaos Servant covenant is beneficial for later shortcuts.
Sen’s Fortress: The Gauntlet
Sen's Fortress is a house of traps. Timing is essential when navigating the swinging blades. For the Titanite Demons at the bottom, it is often safer to ignore them until later.
Reach the roof and find the hidden bonfire by dropping off the ledge where the giant throws fire bombs. This serves as a vital checkpoint.
Boss: Iron Tarkus and the Iron Golem You can summon the NPC Black Iron Tarkus in the room across from the fog gate. He is famously capable of soloing this boss. If fighting yourself, stay between the Golem’s legs and attack until it staggers. If positioned near the edge, the Golem can actually fall off the arena, ending the fight instantly.
Anor Londo: The City of the Gods
Anor Londo is a visual shift and a significant difficulty spike. The infamous silver knight archers on the narrow buttresses require a confident approach. Sprint toward the archer on the right, and use a shield or well-timed rolls to deflect arrows until you are close enough to force him into melee or parry him.
Inside the cathedral, you will find the Giant Blacksmith. He can ascend weapons to Lightning or Crystal, which is useful if you haven't invested heavily in Strength or Dexterity scaling.
Boss: Ornstein and Smough This is the definitive challenge of the mid-game. It is generally easier to kill Ornstein (the small one) first. Use the pillars to block Smough’s charges. In the second phase, Super Smough gains lightning damage but remains slow. Stay close to his legs and roll under his hammer swings. Winning this fight grants the Lordvessel, allowing for fast travel between major bonfires.
The Lord Souls: Choosing Your Path
With the Lordvessel, you must collect four souls to open the way to the final boss. The order is flexible, but a common efficient path is:
1. The Duke’s Archives and Seath the Scaleless
Located through the yellow fog gate in Anor Londo. In the first encounter with Seath, you are scripted to lose. After escaping the prison, navigate the Crystal Caves by watching where the snowflakes land on invisible paths.
- Strategy: Destroy the Primordial Crystal at the back of the arena to make Seath vulnerable. Stay near his side tentacles to avoid his breath attacks.
2. New Londo Ruins and The Four Kings
You must first obtain the Covenant of Artorias ring by defeating the Great Grey Wolf Sif in Darkroot Garden. In New Londo, talk to Ingward on the roof to get the Key to the Seal. Drain the water to reach the boss.
- Strategy: This is a DPS (damage per second) race. Equip your heaviest armor (Havel’s Set is recommended) to ignore poise damage and attack the kings as fast as possible before more spawn.
3. The Catacombs and Tomb of the Giants
Bring a divine weapon to the Catacombs to keep the skeletons from reviving. After defeating Pinwheel, you enter the pitch-black Tomb of the Giants. Use the Sunlight Maggot (found in Lost Izalith) or the Skull Lantern to see.
- Boss: Gravelord Nito: Stay at the entrance of the arena to avoid aggroing the large skeletons in the back. Use a divine weapon to kill the small skeletons, then focus on Nito’s sides.
4. Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith
Defeat the Bed of Chaos. This boss is more of a platforming puzzle than a traditional fight. Break the glowing orbs on the left and right sides, then jump onto the central branch to kill the insect inside. Note: This boss is notorious for being frustrating; taking it slow and using a shield for the arm swipes is suggested.
The Artorias of the Abyss (DLC)
Before finishing the game, the DLC offers the best boss fights in the Remastered edition. To access it, kill the Hydra in Darkroot Basin, save Dusk of Oolacile, and retrieve the Broken Pendant from a Crystal Golem in the Duke’s Archives.
- Sanctuary Guardian: A fast-paced opener. Stay mobile.
- Knight Artorias: A masterclass in timing. Do not heal unless he is mid-animation or you have significant distance. When he buffs himself with purple aura, hit him repeatedly to break his poise and cancel the buff.
- Manus, Father of the Abyss: High aggression. Use the Silver Pendant item to deflect his dark magic waves.
- Black Dragon Kalameet: An optional but rewarding fight. Stay under his chest and watch for his telekinetic grab.
The Kiln of the First Flame
Once all souls are placed in the Lordvessel, the final area opens. The Black Knights here are excellent for farming Titanite Chunks if you need to top off your gear.
Final Boss: Gwyn, Lord of Cinder Gwyn is exceptionally fast and aggressive, but he has one major weakness: he can be parried. If you have practiced parrying throughout the game, this fight can be trivialized. If not, use a high-stability shield and wait for the end of his combos to sneak in a single hit.
NPC Questline Reminders
To see the full story and gain specific items, follow these steps during your walkthrough:
- Siegmeyer of Catarina: Talk to him outside Sen's, then inside Anor Londo, then at Firelink. Helping him in Lost Izalith completes his tragic arc.
- Big Hat Logan: Rescue him from Sen’s Fortress and later the Duke’s Archives. Buy all his spells to trigger his final encounter.
- Solaire of Astora: Always talk to him at each location. To save him, you must reach Rank 2 in the Chaos Servant covenant and kill the red-eyed Sunlight Maggot before he reaches the Lost Izalith shortcut.
Optimization and Final Build Tips
As you reach the end of your run, consider the soft caps for your stats.
- Vitality: Diminishing returns start at 30, with a hard drop-off at 50.
- Endurance: Increases stamina up to 40. Beyond this, it only increases equip load.
- Strength/Dexterity: Most weapons stop scaling significantly after 40.
Dark Souls Remastered rewards those who prepare. By utilizing the Master Key to secure early equipment and focusing on weapon upgrades over raw levels, the daunting world of Lordran becomes a manageable, albeit still dangerous, playground. Whether you choose to link the fire or usher in an age of dark, the journey remains one of the most cohesive experiences in gaming history.
